Coenzyme Q10 (ubidecarenone; CoQ10) was administered at a dose of 60 mg/d either using two conventional formulations or in a lipid microsphere to dogs. Plasma concentrations of CoQ10 were determined by HPLC. The bioavailability of CoQ10 from the lipid microsphere formulation was superior to conventional formulations. These results suggest that three daily administrations of the new formulation should be suitable for therapeutic use.
Plasma concentrations of antithrombin III (AT III), plasminogen (Plg), and protein C (PC) were assayed in 28 patients with venous thrombosis of lower extremities without distinct underlying disorders. Three abnormalities were found in 5 cases (17.8%) in relation to coagulation and fibrinolytic system (3 with congenital AT III deficiency, one each with dysplasminogenemia and congenital PC deficiency). In the patients with either one of these abnormalities, characteristic features of thrombosis are summarized as follows; 1. early onset of clinical symptoms. 2. high frequency of superficial vein thrombosis. 3. high recurrence rate. 4. high frequency of pulmonary embolism.

Effects of o,p'-DDD on parameters of cortisol metabolism were studied in 3 patients with Cushing's syndrome (ectopic ACTH-syndrome, Cushing's disease, and adrenal cancer). Before o,p'-DDD treatment, plasma cortisol, urinary 17OHCS, and urinary free cortisol were elevated in all patients. These parameters correlated well with each other in ectopic ACTH-syndrome and Cushing's disease. However, in adrenal cancer, urinary 17OHCS did not correlate with either plasma cortisol or urinary free cortisol, while the latter two parameters did. During o,p'-DDD, urinary 17OHCS rapidly declined in a patient with ectopic ACTH syndrome and a patient with Cushing's disease before plasma cortisol or urinary free cortisol decreases. Consequently the positive correlations of urinary 17OHCS with the other parameters were lost. In a case of adrenal cancer, urinary 17OHCS again did not correlate with plasma cortisol or urinary free cortisol. In these conditions, plasma cortisol and urinary free cortisol still significantly correlated. The present results demonstrated the limit of urinary 17OHCS as the index of the cortisol secretion rate both in some cases of adrenal cancer and in patients taking o,p'-DDD. It is suggested that urinary free cortisol should be utilized as a more accurate index for the cortisol secretion rate in such circumstances.

We report a rare case of primary malignant lymphoma of the esophagus. The 45-year-old patient was followed up radiologically and endoscopically for 3 months prior to operation.
Two image reconstruction algorithms have been investigated. They are based on filtered backprojection, and are useful when the tissue attenuation is considered to be uniform in the object. The first method uses a weighted backprojection, the weighting factor being determined in such a way that the photon attenuation is compensated with low noise propagation. The parameters involved in the convolution kernel and the correction function were determined by a computer iteration program. The second method, which is a simplified version of the first, uses conventional backprojection, and takes a shorter computation time than the first method. The statistical noise of an image can be minimised by suitable positioning of the coordinate origin for the reconstruction. The theory of the two methods, their performance on statistical noise and some results of mathematical and experimental phantom studies are described.
The prothrombin-converting activity of Factor Xa was enhanced by thrombin-stimulated Factor V-deficient platelets and supplementary extraneous Factor Va, and also by thrombin-stimulated normal human platelets. Both extraneous Factor Va and intra-platelet Factor Va were equally inactivated by a gamma-carboxyglutamic acid-containing plasma protease, activated protein C. However, a relatively larger amount of activated protein C was required for efficient inactivation of platelet-associated Factor Va as compared with the amount of activated protein C needed for inactivation of phospholipid vesicle-associated Factor Va. Protein S, another gamma-carboxyglutamic acid-containing plasma protein, increased the rate of the inactivation of platelet-associated Factor Va about 25-fold. This stimulating effect was observed only slightly with the thrombin-modified protein S. Thus, it was concluded that protein S is essential for the process of inactivation of platelet-associated Factor Va by activated protein C.
A 55-year-old woman with a small focus of malignant lymphoma, 6 mm in diameter, arising within an area of reactive lymphoid hyperplasia (RLH) of the stomach is reported. The diagnosis of lymphoma was suspected by the preoperative endoscopic biopsy. This is the case of this association with an unusually small lymphoma in the early stage, in support of the view that there may be an intimate histogenetic relationship between lymphoma and RLH.
