Mice homozygous for the autosomal recessive gene, cartilage matrix deficiency (cmd/cmd) are characterized by disproportionate dwarfism and cleft palate and are suffered from genetic failure in biosynthesis of cartilage-type proteoglycans. To investigate histochemical aspects of the defects in cartilaginous and other tissues of the mutant mice, complex carbohydrates in the tissues have been studied by methods of light microscopy. As a result of the present investigations, the intercellular matrix of cartilaginous tissues from the mutant was shown to exhibit weaker positive reactions for sulfated and acidic complex carbohydrates, as compared with the corresponding tissues from the control. In certain muscular and nervous tissues from the mutant, the reactions for sulfated complex carbohydrates tended to be weaker in intensity than those in the control. Furthermore, the dermal tissues of the mutant showed apparent mastocytosis. All these results indicate that there exist accessory effects in non-cartilaginous tissues in addition to the defects of cartilaginous tissues in the mutant mice.

This report presents the ultrastructural features of a congenital epulis. The granular cells of the epulis were packed with numerous membrane bound cytoplasmic granules containing particles, small vesicles, and electron-dense materials. These granules were negative in immunohistochemical reaction for CEA (DAKO PAP KIT). Cytoplasmic organelles such as mitochondria, rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi apparatus, were absent. Nuclei were markedly indented. Occasionally, banded intracellular collagen fibrils were observed within the cytoplasm. Some of these fibrils were surrounded by a limiting membrane, whereas others appeared to lie free in the cytoplasm. The collagen fibrils were also seen within a deep invagination of the cell surface. There was no basal lamina around the granular cells. Sporadically, mast cells with many granules containing lamellar formations were found between the granular cells. These observations support the idea that granular cells of the congenital epulis are derived from mesenchymal cells, probably fibroblasts.

A new method for computer-assisted quantitative analysis of a thallium (Tl)-201 myocardial image ("corrected" circumferential profile method) was described. Since the Tl-201 myocardial image of a normal subject is not homogeneous, an attempt was made to correct for this non-homogeneity. Three groups of subjects were studied, including 10 normal volunteers (group A, mean age of 27.5 years), 14 patients with atypical chest pain and normal coronary arteriogram (group B, mean age of 56.7 years) and 16 patients with first transmural myocardial infarction (group C, mean age of 71.0 years). The myocardial images were acquired at rest at anterior, left anterior oblique (30 degrees and 60 degrees) and left lateral projections. With a scintigram, the left ventricle was outlined and divided into 24 radial segments by radii drawn from the center of the left ventricle. Average radioactivity per pixel in normal subjects was obtained in each segment and normalized to the highest segment (= 100%). The ratio of 100% to the mean of normalized radioactivity in percent in each segment from 10 normal volunteers was calculated and designated as a correction factor for each segment. After the correction of average radioactivity per pixel in each segment using this correction factor and after relating it to the highest radioactive segment, the mean (= 100%) and standard deviation (SD) were calculated and (100-4SD)% was defined as the normal lower limit. In the scintigram of groups B and C, "corrected" circumferential profiles were obtained from the regional radioactivity multiplied by the correction factor, normalized to the highest segment (100%) and compared with the lower normal limit. The ratio (%) of the area of patient's circumferential profile curve below the normal limit to the total area below the normal limit was obtained at each view and the sum of them was called the total "corrected" defect score. Infarct size analyzed by the "corrected" circumferential profile method correlated well with that analyzed by visual interpretation, and was useful in differentiating group C from group B.

The present studies examine the effect of starvation together with cold or hot exposure on thyroid hormone levels in rats. At 23 degrees C starved for 5 days, serum thyroid hormone levels decreased significantly compared with fed rats, averaging 3.6 +/- 0.5 micrograms/dl of thyroxine (T4), 47 +/- 11 ng/dl of triiodothyronine (T3), 1.4 +/- 0.3 ng/dl of free T4 and 39.6 +/- 5.1 pg/ml of reverse T3, respectively. At 15 degrees C rats starved for 5 days, serum free T4 level significantly more increased than that of 23 degrees C starved rats, while serum T4 level and T3 did not increase significantly. At 30 degrees C rats whether concomitant starvation or not, serum thyroid hormone levels of both group markedly more decreased than control rats. These experiment provide additional evidence that thyroid gland and the peripheral metabolism of thyroid hormone respond to variety situations such as cold or hot exposure together with starvation or not.
