[The effect of nutrition on the origin of colic (digestive disorders) in horses].

Colics are often initiated by mistakes in feeding inadequate feed quality or quantity or poor feeding technique. The consequences are obstruction, impaction or dysbiosis with increased production of organic acids, gas or toxins. Nutritional anamnesis in patients with colic may give information on the pathogenesis of the disease.

[Cu deficiency in growing dogs].

It was the aim of the investigation to evaluate the influence of marginal (60-30 micrograms/kg BW/d) or adequate (680-360 micrograms/kg BW/d) Cu-intake on the development of growing beagles (n = 10) and the incidence of skeletal diseases. Low Cu-intake (6 dogs) reduced Cu-concentrations in plasma (1.4 vs. 9.7 mumol/l), hair (3.3-4.5 vs. 12.6-14.5 mg/kg DM), liver (19 vs. 246 mg/kg fat free DM), bile (0.28 vs. 7.04 mg/l), and other samples significantly. Hemoglobin and packed cell volume decreased after 4 months of depletion (normochromic anemia). First clinical signs of Cu-deficiency were depigmentation and greying of hair, followed by hyperextensions in the distal forelegs. After necropsy deformations of the long bones were seen more frequently in the depleted animals, without distinct alterations of the microstructure or chemical composition of bones or tendons.

[Right ventricular outflow obstruction due to accessory tricuspid valve tissue in corrected transposition of the great arteries with ventricular septal defect].

A 27-year-old man known to have corrected transposition of the great arteries (CTGA) associated with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) was admitted to our hospital with a suspected increase of the shunt volume. The patient is a first class bodybuilder. Heart catheterization confirmed the diagnosis of a "right-ventricular" mass obstructing the "right-ventricular" outflow tract, which had already been seen at echocardiography. The intraoperative finding showed the tumor to be accessory tissue of the anterior tricuspid leaflet prolapsing through the VSD into the subvalvular outflow tract of the right ventricle. The accessory tricuspid valve tissue was removed by transatrial access. The VSD was closed by a dacron patch using the same route. The postoperative course was uneventful.

First- and second-trimester diagnosis of fetal ocular defects and associated anomalies: report of eight cases.

Ocular cataract, hypertelorism, hypotelorism, anophthalmos, and microphthalmos are rare malformations commonly associated with other fetal anomalies. Previously, ocular malformations were detected only after mid-gestation. Transvaginal sonography allows the detection of many structural fetal anomalies. We describe the case reports of eight ocular anomalies among 1600 fetal screenings by transvaginal sonography at 12-18 weeks' gestation. Severe cataract was correctly diagnosed by transvaginal sonography. However, transvaginal sonography failed to detect moderate cataract in a case of repeat cataract in a subsequent gestation. Anophthalmia may sometimes be secondary to a degenerative process in middle and late pregnancy. In five of the eight described cases, the eye malformations were associated with defects of the central nervous system.

[Harmony in dying].

Dying and death have scarcely before our time preoccupied so many. Some even seem to thrive from thanatology. Do we physicians however consecrate patience and time to the dying of our next or our patients? Did we learn in medical school or with our patients to assist a dying person? Did we search for answers to death and dying by asking philosophers, physicians or musicians? Can we follow their reasoning in profit for our patients or for ourselves? Harmony in death can possibly be found in a harmonious life in our splendid and humane profession. Modest personal experience enriched by reflections tries imperfectly to bring harmony as hope to our dying.

Surgical repair and postoperative course of an infant with infracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, cor triatriatum sinistrum and transposition of the great arteries.

The combination of a d-transposition of the great arteries, cor triatriatum sinistrum and a total anomalous pulmonary venous connection of the infracardiac type is a very rare condition. Up to now, one surgical repair in an adolescent with transposed great arteries and total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage of the supracardiac type has been reported. In this paper, an infant with the above mentioned cardiovascular malformation is presented. The common pulmonary vein drained into the inferior vena cava and was obstructed. There were arborisation abnormalities in both lungs with mild pulmonary hypertension. The infant has been successfully operated upon at the age of 6 months and a weight of 4.5 kg. The membrane within the left atrium was resected, the common pulmonary vein was anastomosed to the left atrium and a Mustard procedure was performed. During the first 6 postoperative weeks, the infant had problems with adaptation. There was both a transient ballooning of the Mustard patch with significant obstruction of the pulmonary venous drainage and a delayed pulmonary recovery. Two months later, the patch was straightened and the child could be discharged from hospital. After 12 months, the child died from an infection of the airways.

Outpatient management of selected infants younger than two months of age evaluated for possible sepsis.

Previously healthy infants younger than 2 months of age without evidence of soft tissue or musculoskeletal infection who had white blood cell counts between 5000 and 15,000/mm3, band form counts less than or equal to 1500/mm3, urinalysis less than or equal to 10 white blood cells/high power field (spun sediment) and stool less than or equal to 5 white blood cells/high power field (if diarrhea) were considered at low risk for a serious bacterial infection. Infants meeting these criteria whose parents were judged to be adequate observers and had a telephone and automobile were eligible for outpatient management. Infants were given ceftriaxone to cover the possibility that the low risk criteria might miss more infants with serious bacterial infections than was predicted. From Jan. 1, 1987 to May 31, 1989, 86 infants younger than 2 months were enrolled. There were no serious complications in these infants. Twelve had transient problems possibly related to the intramuscular ceftriaxone therapy. One low risk infant was hospitalized for Neisseria meningitidis bacteremia and five other infants were hospitalized for medical or social reasons. All six hospitalized infants had short admissions and did well. This study supports the continued use of the low risk criteria to distinguish infants unlikely to have a serious bacterial infection. Furthermore, in a selected group of low risk infants, outpatient management may be an acceptable alternative to inpatient therapy.

The gp116 of the gp58/116 complex of human cytomegalovirus represents the amino-terminal part of the precursor molecule and contains a neutralizing epitope.

The glycoprotein complex gp58/116 of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) represents a dominant antigen for the humoral immune response. We have used the human monoclonal antibody C23, which is capable of neutralizing HCMV in tissue culture without the addition of complement, to study the origin of gp116 as well as the amino acid sequence recognized by the antibody. Our results show that gp116 is derived from the same open reading frame as gp58 and that it represents the amino-terminal portion of the precursor protein. Using prokaryote-expressed beta-galactosidase-gp116 fusion proteins, the binding site of C23 was located to between amino acids 27 to 84 of the amino-terminal portion of gp116. Analyses of HCMV-positive human sera revealed that this portion of the molecule is immunogenic during natural infection.

Rate of recombination of chromosomes 21 in parents of children with Down syndrome.

To test the hypothesis of reduced chiasma frequency causing nondisjunction during meiosis, we examined 34 Down syndrome patients and their parents. Chromosomal polymorphisms and RFLP markers were used to trace the parental origin as well as the frequency of recombination of chromosomes 21. In all but one case, the parental origin and the meiotic stage of nondisjunction could be established by either technique. In 11 cases recombination could be deduced to have taken place during meiosis in the parent who contributed the extra chromosome 21. Because of the underestimation which is inherent in the methods used, these results do not seem to support the chiasma theory.

Metabolism of Dibenzofuran by Pseudomonas sp. Strain HH69 and the Mixed Culture HH27.

A Pseudomonas sp. strain, HH69, and a mixed culture, designated HH27, were isolated by selective enrichment from soil samples. The pure strain and the mixed culture grew aerobically on dibenzofuran as the sole source of carbon and energy. Degradation proceeded via salicylic acid which was branched into the gentisic acid and the catechol pathway. Both salicylic acid and gentisic acid accumulated in the culture medium of strain HH69. The acids were slowly metabolized after growth ceased. The enzymes responsible for their metabolism showed relatively low activities. Besides the above-mentioned acids, 2-hydroxyacetophenone, benzopyran-4-one (chromone), several 2-substituted chroman-4-ones, and traces of the four isomeric monohydroxydiben-zofurans were identified in the culture medium. 2,2',3-Trihydroxybiphenyl was isolated from the medium of a dibenzofuran-converting mutant derived from parent strain HH69, which can no longer grow on dibenzofuran. This gives evidence for a novel type of dioxygenases responsible for the attack on the biarylether structure of the dibenzofuran molecule. A meta-fission mechanism for cleavage of the dihydroxylated aromatic nucleus of 2,2',3-trihydroxybiphenyl is suggested as the next enzymatic step in the degradative pathway.

Transformation of Dibenzo-p-Dioxin by Pseudomonas sp. Strain HH69.

Dibenzo-p-dioxin was oxidatively cleaved by the dibenzofuran-degrading bacterium Pseudomonas sp. strain HH69 to produce minor amounts of 1-hydroxydibenzo-p-dioxin and catechol, while a 2-phenoxy derivative of muconic acid was formed as the major product. Upon acidic methylation, the latter yielded the dimethylester of cis, trans-2-(2-hydroxyphenoxy)-muconic acid.

Human gametes and zygotes studied by nonradioactive in situ hybridization.

A nonradioactive in situ hybridization technique was applied to human gametes and abnormally fertilized or developed zygotes. Using haptenized chromosome-specific probes, visualization was obtained using immunocytochemistry to achieve a fluorescent stain on specific hybrids. Using a chromosome 1-specific DNA probe, almost all spermatozoa gave a positive result, i.e., one hybridization signal per cell could be observed. Furthermore, it was possible to identify sperm cells with two spots, suggesting nondisjunction. Two cleavage arrested embryos from different patients showed both: two brightly fluorescent spots and two weaker spots with the same DNA probe. Using a Y-specific DNA probe the percentages of positive spermatozoa from the normal males ranged between 48.1% and 49.1%. In an embryo with four grossly haploid chromosome sets, three fluorescent spots were obtained with the Y-specific DNA probe, indicating the penetration of three spermatozoa.

Control of prostaglandin-induced parturition in sows by injection of the beta-adrenergic blocking agent carazolol or carazolol and oxytocin.

Although parturition commonly is induced in swine with prostaglandin F2 alpha or one of its analogs, variation in response to the treatment is large. The purpose of this investigation was to more precisely terminate parturition. Two experiments were conducted. Sows all received prostaglandin analog followed, 20 h later, by different doses of the beta-adrenergic blocking agent carazolol and(or) oxytocin. Treatment with 3 mg of carazolol alone caused parturition to commence within 2.6 +/- .23 (SEM) h after injection. Parturition was complete in 2.0 +/- .13 h and proceeded smoothly without the necessity of manual assistance. Adding 2.5 I.U. of oxytocin to the 3 mg of carazolol speeded the onset of labor (1.7 +/- .17 h). However, in some cases parturition was interrupted and the time passing between the birth of the first and the last piglet was prolonged to 2.5 +/- .28 h. We conclude that by applying carazolol 20 h after a prostaglandin analog, parturition in swine may be terminated very effectively.

[Animal nutrition for veterinarians--recent cases of clinical disorders in horses after intake of ionophore-containing feed].

Anamnesis and clinical signs of horses form five different stables after ingestion of ionophores are reported and techniques of feed examination are described. Within a few hours or days after feeding of new types or batches of concentrates horses fell ill. They showed colic-like symptoms with intense sweating and ataxia. Most of the sick animals died within a short time span. Samples of the concentrates were analysed and different types and amounts of ionophores were detected. In four cases contamination by monensin in concentrations of less than 5 mg to 679 mg/kg feed were found. One feed sample contained monensin (8.8 mg/kg feed) as well as salinomycin (67.3 mg/kg feed). In one case lasalocid (7.9 mg/kg feed) was present. One horse from the stable where animals had obtained concentrates containing monensin (679 mg/kg feed) was necropsied. Typical signs of monensin intoxication with severe myocardial degeneration were found. Veterinarians should be alert to this rare but severe intoxication of horses.
