In this study the sensibility of important disease germs of a clinical and an ambulatory test material has been investigated to the substances "Epicillin" and "Ampicillin". Thereby could be found that 67% (43%) of the E. coli and 55% (36%) of the proteus type, as well as 96% (96%) of the enterococcus type of the ambulatory (clinical) test material were sensitive to Epicillin and Ampicillin. Staphylococcus not producing penicillinase, were well-sensitive, while staphylococcus producing penicillinase, contrarily showed to be insensitive. Salmonellae proved to be well-sensitive up to 97%, and the rest left was limited sensitive. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) resulted in favourable findings for enterococcus, staphylococcus aureus and salmonellae; at a corresponding sensibility the same is valid for E. coli and the proteus. The investigations carried out in-vitro, reveal an equal effectiveness of Epicillin and Ampicillin.
In 588 bloodsamples of negride natives from Moçambique, preferably Chuabo and Macua, haemoglobin analyses were performed. In 21 cases an increase of Hb A2 was found, indicating the presence of heterozygous beta-thalassaemia, in one case the changes in Hb-analysis were typical for beta-delta-thalassaemia, 18 samples could be shown to contain Hb S, typical for the heterozygous sickle cell trait. Futhermore in 7 cases Hb A2' was found. In two bloodsamples haemoglobin variants were observed, which according to their electrophoretical mobility were assumed to represent Hb D in one case, and Hb G in the other. In the Chuabo population the frequency of the thalassaemia gene was found to be more than twice as high as in the Macua population. In non-lepers Hb S was observed with a remarkable higher incidence than in lepers.
Comparative studies of renal biopsy specimens and in vitro cryoprecipitate were carried out in a patient with mixed immunoglobulin G (IgG)-immunoglobulin M (IgM) cryoglobulinemia associated with glomerulonephritis. The IgM isolated from the cryoprecipitate was an antibody with anti-IgG activity. Proliferative endocapillary glomerulonephritis was found in the kidney, with large amorphous deposits in the capillary walls. On immunofluorescent examination, these deposits contained IgG and C3. Ultrastructural studies of both cryoprecipitate and glomerular deposits revealed unusual structures designated as "cylindrical or annular bodies." The morphologic characteristics of these bodies were exactly the same in the kidney and in the cryoprecipitate. These findings suggest an identity between the glomerular deposits and the circulating cryoglobulin, supporting the hypothesis that the glomerulonephritis reported here is an immune-complex disease.

A structural and biochemical study is presented concerning the agglutination of gametic flagella, the initial step in the mating reaction of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. An alteration in the distribution of the intramembranous particles revealed by freeze-fracturing of flagella membranes is shown to accompany gametic differentiation in both mating types. The isolation and electrophoretic analysis of flagellar membranes and mastigonemes are reported; no electrophoretic differences can be detected when the membrane or mastigoneme glycoproteins from vegative and gametic cells are compared, nor when glycoproteins from the two mating types are compared, and no novel polypeptides are present in gametic preparations. The membrane vesicles, after they are freed of mastigonemes by sedimentation through a discontinuous sucrose gradient, are extremely active as an isoagglutinin, indicating a direct involvement of the membrane in the mating reaction.
The synthesis of simian virus 40 (SV40)-specific proteins in HeLa cells infected with the nondefective adenovirus 2 (Ad2)-SV40 hybrid viruses, Ad2+ND2, Ad2+ND3, Ad2+ND4, and Ad2+ND5, was investigated. Infected-cell proteins were labeled with radioactive amino acids late after infection, when host protein synthesis was shut off, and analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. All polypeptides normally seen in Ad2-infected cells were found in cells infected by the hybrid viruses. In addition to the Ad2-specific proteins, cells infected with Ad2+ND2 contain two SV40-specific proteins with apparent molecular weights of 42,000 and 56,000, cells infected with Ad2+ND4 contain one protein with an apparent molecular weight of 56,000, and cells infected with Ad2+ND5 contain one protein with an apparent molecular weight of 42,000. Cells infected with Ad2+ND3 do not contain detectable amounts of proteins not seen during Ad2 infection. Pulse-chase experiments demonstrate that the SV40-specific proteins induced by Ad2+ND2, Ad2+ND4, and Ad2+ND5 are metabolically unstable. These proteins are not present in purified virions. Two nonstructural Ad2-specific proteins have been demonstrated in Ad2 and hybrid virus-infected cells which have a smaller apparent molecular weight after a short pulse than after a pulse followed by a chase. The molecular weight increase during the chase may be caused by the addition of carbohydrate to a polypeptide backbone.
