[RNA metabolism and ageing (author's transl)].

The labelling behaviour of RNA fractions in rat liver after application of 32P-orthophosphate and 14C-orotate in vivo in young (3-5 months) and old animals (20 months) was presented. Whereas the tracer incorporation in old animals 60 minutes after 32P-application seems to be decreased we observed increased specific activities of nuclear RNA 30 and 60 minutes after application of 14C-orotate i.p. - Measuring of RNA synthesis in isolated cell nuclei after in vivo stimulation by cortisol (2 mg/100 g body weight) showed a stronger and longer continued stimulation in young animals as in old both in the Mn++ system and in the Mg++ system. When we compared the young with the old controls the rate of synthesis was increased in the old controls. The results support observations on changed regulations of the transcription of genetic informations in the age.

[Fluctuating deafness (author's transl)].

The problem of fluctuating deafness merits a separate place in otological pathology. On the basis of 52 cases of recurrent fluctuations in hearing in patients observed over a sufficiently long period, the authors provide evidence to the effect that, in addition to pressure disturbances accepted up to now, other mechanisms may be responsible. An aetiological study emphasises the role of local factors, but examination for general causes is also necessary. Clinical study of fluctuating deafness also reveals interesting data which, taken in combination with pathogenic hypotheses, are of therapeutic significance.

[Cryogenic injuries of the rabbit abdominal aorta and the iliac artery].

In rabbits, cryogenic injuries of the walls of abdominal aorta and iliac arteries were histologically examined after application of a cryoprobe ob -160 degrees C for 1 minute. Seven days thereafter the animals were killed. Extended partial and circular necroses and calcifications of the vascular walls were found. The alterations were less expressed when the blood stream was maintaimed during the freezing. Maximal changes occured at additional centripetal pinching the vessels.

[Current aspects of neurocysticercosis. Clinical and pathological report on 3 cases].

This is a clinical and pathological report on three cases (one 48-year-old male, one 57-year-old female, and one 59-year-old male) of neurocysticercosis where postmortem examinations were made between 1972 and 1974. In all of these three cases invasion of the body by the larva of Taenia solium and, more specifically, of the interpeduncular cisterns had led to chronic lymphocytic and granulomatous leptomeningitis and severe hydrocephalus. Complicating the disease picture in one case each were an occlusive granular ependymitis in the aqueduct and a nonspecific endangiitis. The great importance of liquor eosinophilia to the clinical diagnosis of neurocysticercosis is again demonstrated by reference to these cases. The complement fixation reaction is recommended as the most reliable method of diagnosing. This should be should in all ases of etiologically uncertain chronic leptomeningitis

Ultrasonic disinfection of the root canal.

The use of ultrasonics to increase the bactericidal efficiency of endodontic irrigation was tested on four microorganisms. Ultransonics alone had a reducing effect but coupling it with a biocidal agent led to a more efficient bactericidal synergism. A sonosynergistic system of cleaning and disinfecting the root canal system has been described.
