A method by which for a small cost it is possible to obtain a quantitative expression for the utilization, disposition and cost of drugs in a Danish county of 500,000 inhabitants. The procedure makes it possible to follow reimbursed preparations, i. e., drugs considered essential for the treatment of diseases. The sale, in D kr., of reimbursed preparations to individuals comprises about 80% of the sale of preparations requiring prescription. And in turn the sale of the latter amounts to 80% of total drug sales to single subjects. The method is based on systematic utilization of all the information available on each prescription; concepts of 'Entry Parameters', 'Calculated Units' and 'Derived Units' was discussed; the 'units' concern frequency of prescription and age- and sex specific dose-frequencies (weight units or defined daily doses -- DDD's). The possibility of creating a base for calculation of the frequency of certain diseases and of side-effects of drugs is mentioned, and examples of the application of the method to certain categories of patients and to certain drugs are given. From limitations of the method it is concluded that it should be considered as a supplement to other complete methods for the study of drug consumption.
Biological control of schistosomiasis by means of introduction of the north American planorbid snail, Helisoma duryi, as a competitor of the intermediate host snails has been proposed. The systematics of the genus Helisoma and the geographic distribution of the different species is described. Papers dealing with laboratory experiments or field observations on the competition between H. duryi and different intermediate host snails have been reviewed. The status of H. duryi as intermediate host of trematodes has been evaluated by searching the literature for all the trematode species that are recorded from the genus Helisoma. The list does not include trematodes of medical or veterinary importance and despite many attempts it has not been possible to infect H. duryi with Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium. Finally this paper makes a few comments on the experiments that should be performed in the laboratory, under semifield conditions and and field conditions before H. duryi should be actively dispersed in Africa. The aspects to be considered include the nature of the competitive interactions, the relation between H. duryi and different medical and veterinary important trematodes and the effect of H. duryi on the biotope.

The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy and side effects following single and repeated (6 weeks apart) praziquantel treatment (40 mg/kg) in a Schistosoma mansoni-endemic focus with long-standing transmission at Lake Albert in Uganda between December 1996 and January 1997. The results were based on 482 individuals, randomly representing all age and both gender groups. The cure rate following the first and second treatments was 41.9% and 69.1%, respectively. The cure rate was higher in adults than in children, irrespective of intensity of infection. In addition, the cure rate declined markedly with increasing intensity of infection. The reduction in intensity of infection was marked, being 97.7% and 99.6% after the first and second treatments, respectively. A pre- and post-treatment symptom questionnaire revealed a broad range of side effects, including abdominal pain and diarrhoea. However, no serious or long-lasting complications affecting compliance were observed. The marked reductions in faecal egg excretion and the acceptable level of side effects point to a single praziquantel treatment (40mg/kg) as the strategy of choice in such a highly endemic S. mansoni focus.
Four oligozoospermic men with marginally raised serum prolacatin levels were treated with bromocriptine for a period of 90 days. Bromocriptine treatment did not result in an increase in sperm count.
To investigate the relationship of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) to average blood glucose concentration and to birth weight of infants of diabetic mothers, HbA1c was determined in 42 consecutive insulin-dependent pregnant diabetic women in the third trimester. HbA1c correlated significantly to the average blood glucose levels in the preceding 8 wk (r = 0.73, P less than 0.001). No correlation was found between HbA1c and the relative birth weight ratio (RBWR) for all newborn infants. However, in the major subgroups of pregnancies, White class B and C without prognostically bad signs in pregnancy (PBSP), HbA1c in the third trimester significantly correlated to RBWR (r = 0.59, P less than 0.01). In a subgroup of six pregnant diabetic women in whom HbA1c and blood glucose concentrations frequently were determined from the 13th to the 33rd gestational week, a relationship between HbA1c and the average blood glucose concentration of the preceding 8 and 12 wk in the individual pregnant subject was established. In spite of this correlation, HbA1c was found to be a poor predictor of the average blood glucose concentration in the individual patient. This indicates that HbA1c cannot satisfactorily describe the degree of diabetes control without simultaneous determinations of blood glucose. HbA1c determinations were found to be of value as an additional indicator of the quality of regulation during ambulatory control in diabetic pregnancy because an increase in HbA1c suggested an impairment of diabetic control. The perinatal mortality and morbidity of the infants of diabetic mothers were satisfactory in this series, as only one perinatal death, one nonserious malformation, and two cases of mild respiratory distress syndrome occurred among the 43 infants.
