Determination of cryoglobulins as lipoprotein-autoantibody immune complexes and antigenic determinants against antilipoprotein autoantibody.

Serum IgG-antilipoprotein-autoantibody activity (at 4 degrees C) of a plane xanthoma patient was shown by double-immunodiffusion method. Cryoglobulins in the serum were dissociated to polyclonal IgG and alpha- and beta-lipoproteins by acidification and were reconstructed by neutralization. IgG fraction of the cryoglobulins precipitated with lipoproteins. The cryoglobulins were thus demonstrated to be immune complexes of polyclonal IgG-antilipoprotein-autoantibody and both alpha- and beta-lipoproteins. A part of the lipoprotein-autoantibody immune complexes was not cryoprecipitable. Antigenic determinants for the autoantibody existed in the lipid moieties of lipoproteins, in contrast to the apoproteins which determined the specificity to heteroimmune antilipoprotein antibody. The presence of more than nine different antigenic determinants against the autoantibody indicated that lipoproteins were immunologically heterogeneous depending upon the lipid moieties. Lipoproteins reactive with the autoantibody varied quantitatively in normal individuals and were not detected in a primary hyper-beta-lipoproteinaemia patient and in a primary biliary liver cirrhosis patient with much lipoprotein-X. The absence of antigenicity in the two patients' sera is most likely caused by abnormal lipid moieties of lipoproteins.

Studies on a patient with iminopeptiduria. I. Identification of urinary iminopeptides.

A patient suffering from recurrent ulcers on the legs was found to excrete large amounts of iminodipeptides in the urine. Among the iminodipeptides excreted, Glu-Hyp, Asp-Pro, Glu-Pro, Leu-Hyp, Gly-Pro, Thr-Pro, Ser-Pro, Ala-Pro, Val-Pro, Ile-Pro, Leu-Pro, and Phe-Pro were identified and their quantities estimated. Some of the iminopeptides had to be synthesized for purposes of identification.

[Study of the clinical effects of sulpiride and perphenazine in 82 schizophrenic patients by the double blind method].

Our clinical and statistical evaluation of Sulpiride and Perphenazine was carried out over a 10 week period, in 82 patients of both sexes, aged 20 to 56 years. All were chronic patients with a symptomatic profile of apathy, lack of initiative but with the personality relatively well preserved in 56 patients. The daily dosage varied from 300 to 1,200 mg Sulpiride orally and 12 to 48 mg Perphenazine. The effects of therapy have been received globally and individually at the beginning, 4th, 8th, and the end of the 10th week using the B.P.R.S. modified by the clinic of Neurology and Psychiatry of the University of Hiroshima. Using "Armitage's Restricted Sequential Design", there was no significant difference between the therapeutic effects of these 2 neuroleptics. However, Sulpiride appeared more beneficial following the review during the 8th week and the 4th week.

Age-dependent resistance of chickens to salmonella in vitro: phagocytic and bactericidal activities of splenic phagocytes.

The phagocytic and bactericidal activities to Salmonella pullorum (strain 9-25) or Salmonella senftenberg (strain 99D) were examined in chicken splenic phagocytes from 0-day-old to 2-month-old chickens. The phagocytic activity against S pullorum increased in splenic phagocytes from chickens older than 7 days, but significant changes in activity against S senftenberg were not observed during the experimental period. The bactericidal activity of splenic phagocytes against S senftenberg was higher than that of phagocytes against S pullorum during the same period. Increase of the bactericidal activity against S pullorum was observed with increasing age, but the activity of the splenic phagocytes from 0-day-old chickens against S senftenberg was similar to that of the phagocytes from 2-month-old chickens. Although delayed hypersensitivity was confirmed by delayed wattle reaction in 2-month-old chickens sensitized with living S pullorum, the sensitization did not markedly affect phagocytic and bactericidal activities.

Enzootic occurrence of chloramphenicol-resistant Salmonella typhimurium var copenhagen in calf population.

Chloramphenicol (CP)-resistant Salmonella typhimurium var copenhagen was frequently isolated (44.1 to 76.7%) from dead, diseased, and healthy calves on 3 farms in 1973 in northern Japan. On 2 of the farms, CP-resistant salmonella appeared suddenly during an epizootic of salmonella infection, and persisted. Of 87 CP-resistant to tetracycline (TC), streptomycin (SM), and sulfonamides (SA), and the remaining 13 isolates from dead calves on a farm were resistant to TC, SM, SA, and kanamycin (KM). Resistance patterns of all CP-resistant isolates were transferred completely.
