Six cynomolgus monkeys were inoculated subcutaneously with enteroviurs 71 (E71), isolated from the stools of a patient with hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). Clinical symptoms were observed in three of the six monkeys. One monkey showed complete paralysis of the lower extremities and two animals showed weakness in the hind limbs 4 to 7 days after inoculation. Lesions were found in the central nervous system (CNS) of all monkeys. Mild to moderate vascular lesions, perivascular cuffings, degeneration and disappearance of the neurons and meningial lymphocytic infiltration were observed in the grey and/or white matter of the spinal cord, medulla oblongata, cerebral cortex and brain stem. No virus was recovered from the CNS or liver of any of the six monkeys. However, serum neutralizing antibody titers had risen in monkeys inoculated with E71.

Intradermal injection of phytohemagglutinin (PHA) in the wattles of chickens elicited marked swellings often accompanied by induration. Histologically, this reaction was characterized by a perivascular accumulation of lymphocytes and macrophage migration in the central layer of the wattles. Heterophilic infiltration was observed mostly at early hours and waned thereafter. Sometime basophils were prominently located around the vessels. These responses were significantly decreased in cases of neonatal thymectomy. Therefore, the PHA skin test was considered to be a thymus-dependent response. The use of the PHA skin test in chickens may provide useful information for the evaluation of thymus-dependent function.

Chronic or recurrent non-obstructive urinary tract infection was investigated in 158 adult patients, 39 of whom had vesicoureteral reflux. Conservative, long-term chemotherapy did not eradicate the reflux in these patients. The characteristics of reflux in adults were studied with cystograms, excretory urograms, cystoscopic findings of the ureteral orifices or trigones and the clinical histories of the patients. These data were evaluated and compared to data obtained from adults with chronic or recurrent uncomplicated urinary tract infection and from children with vesicoureteral reflux who were referred to us during the same period. Non-obstructive vesicoureteral reflux in adults may be considered to be congenital in most cases, since the proportion of trigonal anomalies in adults with reflux is equal to that in children and the frequency of abnormalities at the ureteral orifice and trigonal region is significantly more than the frequency noted in control patients with uncomplicated pyelonephritis. Characteristically, excretory urography revealed caliceal scarring in adults with reflux in contrast to children, in whom a normal or dilated pattern of the upper tract was prominent. Recurring renal infection, for which this congenital defect of the ureterovesical valve must be responsible, produces progressive renal damage. Prolonged conservative treatment is of little use and is often destructive in adults with reflux.
Specimens of human tuberous xanthomas obtained from two hyper-beta-lipoproteinemic patients were prepared with HE and Sudan III stain and by direct immunofluorescence with fluorescein isothiocyanate labeled antihuman beta-lipoprotein rabbit serum. In some histiocytes and foam cells in early stages, lipids were stained in granular patterns and specific fluorescence was observed. In some foam cell nests, specific fluorescence was weak or absent, and orange-colored lipid autofluorescence was present. The foam cells in such nests were probably late foam cells and corresponded to the large cytoplasmic foam cells stained densely and amorphously for lipids. It was concluded that at early stages of xanthoma formation, serum lipoproteins were incorporated into dermal histiocytes and early foam cells. The apoproteins of the incorporated lipoproteins were probably degraded and lipid residues accumulated in the cells. Specimens of tuberous xanthoma covered by plane xanthoma showed lipids and bright specific fluorescence at the basement membrane zone. A faint fluorescence was observed in the upper dermis and even in parts of the epidermal intercellular spaces.
Untreated rabbits and rabbits sensitized with human beta-lipoproteins were intracutaneously injected with either human or rabbit beta-lipoproteins (2 mg as protein). Forty-eight hours later, at the human beta-lipoprotein injection site, dense cell infiltrations stood out sharply demarcated from the surrounding region. The infiltrating cells were composed of polymorphonuclear cells, nuclear dust and histiocytes. Foam cell nests were observed in sensitized rabbit dermis one week after human beta-lipoprotein injection. Direct immunofluorescence employing fluorescein isothiocyanate labeled antihuman beta-lipoprotein antiserum showed that the injected human beta-lipoproteins were incorporated into the infiltrating cells of sensitized rabbit dermis up to 48 hours after injection. Specific fluorescence was greatly reduced but lipid autofluorescence remained in mature foam cells. During the 3-week examination period, no trace of foam cell nests was found at the site of human beta-lipoprotein injection on non-sensitized rabbits. Intracutaneous rabbit beta-lipoprotein injection revealed no histiocytic infiltrations in either sensitized or non-sensitized rabbits. These findings indicated that intracutaneously injected human beta-lipoporteins were incorporated into rabbit dermal histiocytes more easily in aggregated immune complex form than in their natural state. These histiocytes were easily transformed to foam cells. Apoproteins of the incorporated lipoproteins were degraded, and lipid residues accumulated in mature foam cells.

Lysed granule fraction was prepared from splenic adherent cells from 0-day-old to 2-month-old chickens and was examined antibacterial activity to Salmonella pullorum and Salmonella sentfenberg. The activity of lysed granule fraction from 2-month-old chickens was exhibited at pH 5.0 but not exhibited at pH 6.0 or 7.0 to both serotypes of Salmonella. At pH 5.0, lysed granule fraction from 0-day-old chickens revealed little antibacterial activity to S. pullorum but the activity increased with increasing age. At 240 min of incubation, 60% and 95% of S. pullorum were inactivated in lysed granule fractions from 7-day-old and 2-month-old chickens, respectively. High antibacterial activity to S. senftenberg was observed in lysed granule fraction from 2-month-old chickens in which 99.6% of the bacteria was inactivated during 240 min; In lysed granule fractions from 0-day old and 7-day-old chickens, 90% of S. senftenberg was inactivated during 60 min but the number of bacteria increased conversely after incubation for 240 min. Changes in enzymatic activities of 4 enzymes in the lysed granule fractions from various ages of chickens were examined. beta-Glucronidase increased statistically significantly to 2.4 and 7.6 times from 0-day-old to 7-day-old and 2-month-old chickens, respectively. Acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase increased slightly but not significantly different, and enzymatic activity of myeloperoxidase was scarcely detected.
