Live vaccine prepared from streptomycin-dependent mutants of E. coli was well tolerated in various doses and at various times of administration, for there were no adverse reactions. There was no evidence of reversion to a virulent form. Efficacy was closely related to frequency of application of the vaccine. Vaccination must be performed as early as possible to immunize against infection during the first few days of life. It was possible to confer protection against the diarrhoea that occurs at 3-4 weeks of age. The use of an oral vaccine under intensive husbandry systems was shown to be safe. When the piglets were kept in cages, the vaccine could be administered in the existing mixing tanks for water supply, without the need for special equipment. Oral immunization of pigs already infected or already ill did not aggravate the existing infection, whether the animals were housed individually or in pens. Because of the dilution effect of the mixing tank and water supply pipes, the dose of vaccine, given on ten successive days, should be calculated at 10(9) organisms of the E. coli mutant per animal. This should supply a number close to the desired bacterial count of 10(10) organisms per animal daily. Immunization significantly reduced the frequency of gastrointestinal diseases during the first three weeks of age in piglets.

Experimental studies carried out in 11 dogs have shown that, with the aid of a high frequency diathermy probe, satisfactory papillotomies can be performed. On the basis of these results, endoscopic papillotomies have been carried out in 23 patients. Indications for papillotomy were biliary calculi in 11 high-risk patients, in 6 cases calculi overlooked during bile duct surgery, and in 3 patients recurrent calculi after previous cholecystectomy. In 3 patients circumscribed papillary stenosis indicated endoscopic papillotomy. Papillotomy was successful in all 23 cases. In 9 cases the calculi had been passed spontaneously after 3-5 days. In 10 patients the stones had to be extracted using the Dormia basket or a wire loop, and in one patient the stone had to be removed surgically. In one of these patients endoscopic papillotomy was followed by an attack of pancreatitis which subsided after 3 days. Further complications, in particular the occurrence of massive bleeding after papillotomy, were not observed.

Preceding anaesthesia 750 randomised patients, sub-divided into 5 different age groups, were given 500 ml of a standard plasma-substitute at a flow rate of 25-30 ml/min. There was direct correlation (p=0.1%) of the frequency of side-effects to the substance used; none, however, to the age or general surgical risk. Side-effects were observed in 21.3% with derivates of gelatin as compared to 3.7% with Macrodex and Plasmasteril combined. The rate of more serious anaphylactoid reactions was 6% with Haemaccel, 1.3% with Gelifundol-S, 0.67% with Macrodex and less than 0.67% with Neo-Plasmagel. The study reveals that serious side-effects may be expected in orthopaedictic patients after application of plasma substitutes. As a prophylactic procedure for those patients we recommend, therefore, the application of these substances only after careful consideration of the indications for their use.
In cooperation of four laboratories the efficiency of the two detergents Präwozell N-BX (Nekal BX) and Ditalan E used for homogenization of diagnostic specimens for cultural investigations on tuberculosis was compared. The pretreatment of sputum specimens was done according to the directions given in "DAB 7 (D.L.) - DDR" [German Pharmacopocia 7(Diagnostic laboratory methods) GDR]. Percentage of positive cultures, time of growth and rate of contamination were evaluated. Comparative investigations with both methods using the same sputum specimens were performed with 2117 samples. 245 cultures were positive in all, 223 (91,0%) of them after homogenization by means of Präwozell N-BX and 205 (83,7%) pretreated with Ditalan E. Out of 161 cultures positive with both methods, the time of growth was shorter at least one week in 19 samples (12%) after using Präwozell N-BX and in 55 specimens (34%) homogenized by means of Ditalan E than in the parallel culture. The number of contaminations was 18 (0,85%) after Ditalan E pretreatment and 10 (0,47%) after Präwozell N-BX homogenization. Taking as a basis the directives concerning the cultural investigations for mycobacteria Ditalan E did not show better results than those found with Präwozell N-BX.
