Melorheostosis of the upper limb: a report of two cases.

The etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of two cases of melorheostosis are reported. The hyperostotic lesion corresponded well with both C7 and C8 segments of a sclerotome. The accompanying subcutaneous tumors in case 1 originated from the medical cutaneous nerve of the forearm, whose axons were coming mainly from the C8 dorsal root ganglion. These findings strongly suggest that the primary disorder exists in sensory nerves. Pain originating from the hyperostosis could be suppressed by the disodium salt of (1-hydroxyethylidene) diphosphonic acid.

Spontaneous metastasis of highly metastatic variants of mouse tumors and the effect of drugs on the metastasis.

Spontaneous metastasis of highly metastatic variants, B16 melanoma BL-6 and colon adenocarcinoma 26 NL-22, was examined. Tumor cells were inoculated into the right front footpad and the original tumors were removed by amputation of the forelimb at an appropriate time after tumor inoculation. Spontaneous lymph node and lung metastases occurred with B16 BL-6 and spontaneous lung metastasis occurred with NL-22. Analysis of the time-dependent formation of lymph node and lung metastases of BL-6 indicated that lung metastasis could be formed after the lymph node metastasis. Metastasis is influenced by the mouse strain, and both inbred and F1 hybrid mice of syngeneic origin could be used as host animals. By using these metastatic variants, two spontaneous metastasis systems were established. In order to evaluate the systems, the effects of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and adriamycin (ADM) were examined. 5-FU was effective against the metastases of both tumors, and ADM was moderately effective against B16 BL-6 metastasis.

High calcium content of pleiotropic drug-resistant P388 and K562 leukemia and Chinese hamster ovary cells.

The calcium content of pleiotropic drug-resistant tumor cells was estimated and compared with that of the parent tumor lines. P388 leukemia cells resistant to vincristine and Adriamycin contained more calcium (1.5- to 1.8-fold) in the cells and on the cell surface than the parent P388 cells. Similar results were obtained with human K562 myelogenous leukemia cells resistant to vincristine and also with Chinese hamster ovary cells resistant to colchicine. However, the calcium content of P388 cells resistant to 5-fluorouracil was almost the same as that of the parent P388 cells. The calmodulin content of pleiotropic resistant tumor lines and a 5-fluorouracil-resistant tumor line was almost the same as that of the corresponding parent lines. The isolated plasma membrane of K562 cells resistant to vincristine contained approximately 1.5-fold higher calcium than the parent cells. These results indicate that the higher cellular calcium content might be a characteristic phenotype of pleiotropic resistant tumor lines.

Metastasis after intravenous inoculation of highly metastatic variants of mouse tumors and the effects of several antitumor drugs on the tumors.

Tumor metastasis was examined after iv inoculation of highly metastatic variants of mouse tumors. Highly metastatic variants, B16-F10 and B16-BL6, of B16 melanoma origin and colon 26 NL-17 of colon adenocarcinoma 26 origin were used in the experiments. Formation of pulmonary metastasis was influenced by the mouse strain and age. Based on the results, experimental metastasis systems of these tumors were established, and the effects of chemotherapeutic agents were examined. 5-Fluorouracil and adriamycin were significantly effective for the suppression of pulmonary metastasis. The degrees of suppression of metastasis by these drugs were different with different tumor variants, but the sensitivity of the metastasis to the drug was similar to that of the parent tumor. Several aspects of the chemotherapy of metastasis are discussed.

Application of a continuous channel electron multiplier for measuring gaseous tritium at low pressures.

Some fundamental studies on the application of a continuous channel electron multiplier (channeltron) for monitoring gaseous tritium present in an evacuated vessel at low pressures below 10(-4) Torr were carried out. The results showed that at the tritium pressures lower than 10(-6) Torr the tritium counting rate measured by the channeltron increased linearly, in practice, with increasing tritium pressure, as was expected by assuming that the interactions between beta-particle emitted from tritium and the vessel wall and gaseous molecules during the migration of beta-particle to the channeltron can be ignored. However, in the range of pressures over 10(-5) Torr the measured tritium counting rate was found to be getting smaller than the expected with increase in tritium pressure. This is presumably due to the absorption and scattering of beta-particles by gaseous tritium.

Fundamental study on decontamination of tritium from gaseous phases by copper oxide.

Some fundamental studies on removal of tritium from gaseous streams by a small column of copper oxide were carried out. An about 10 cm length of column packed with 100 g of copper oxide was examined on the conversion ratios of hydrogen and tritium into water. The experiment with hydrogen of 0.1% in argon showed that the logarithmic plot of remaining ratio of hydrogen by passing through the column is proportional to the reciprocal of gas flow rate and to the length of oxide column. The oxide column was also used for treating tritium-bearing waste gas from an evacuating system of alpha D-T neutron generator. It was observed that at column temperatures lower than 450 degrees C the conversion ratio of tritium in the waste gas into water is considerably smaller than that of hydrogen of 0.1% in argon.

Enhancement of pancreatic tumorigenesis of 4-hydroxyaminoquinoline 1-oxide by ethionine in rats.

The effect of ethionine on pancreatic tumorigenesis of 4-hydroxyaminoquinoline 1-oxide (4-HAQO) in rats was studied. The high incidence of hyperplastic nodules developed in the exocrine pancreas of animals receiving a single injection of 4-HAQO only or protein-deficient diet containing 0.5% ethionine for 4 days followed by 4-HAQO. The incidence of adenoma was higher than that of hyperplastic nodules and well-differentiated adenocarcinoma developed in 1 out of 12 animals receiving protein-deficient diet containing ethionine for 18 days followed by 4-HAQO. No tumor was found in the pancreas of animals that received 0.005N HCl without 4-HAQO. These results suggest that the pancreatic tumorigenesis of 4-HAQO is enhanced by ethionine.

Effect of various factors on induction of liver tumors in animals by the alpha-isomer of benzene hexachloride.

The tumorigenic effect of a diet containing the alpha-isomer of benzene hexachloride (alpha-BHC) on the liver of various animals was examined. It was found that alpha-BHC induced liver tumors in male and female mice but not in rats or hamsters in the present observations. Histological changes in the liver of mice induced by alpha-BHC were also much greater than those induced in rats or hamsters. Male animals were more susceptible to the tumorigenic action of alpha-BHC than females. Among different strains of mice, the DDY showed greatest susceptibility and the C57BL/6 showed the least. Induction oflpha-BHC was not inhibited by concomitant feeding of 1-naphthyl isothiocyanate or p- hydroxypropiophenone. However, 3-methylcholanthrene slightly inhibited their induction by alpha-BHC.
