[Triceps and subscapular skinfold thickness. A random sample, Geneva 1972].

Subscapular and triceps skinfold thickness were measured by using a Lange skinfold caliper, on a random sample of 2861 boys and 2692 girls aged 4 to 191/2 years. The technique of measurement is specified, and the data are submitted to statistical analysis with a view to standardization. For both skinfolds, the sample size, the arithmetic mean and the standard deviation in each age group and either sex are given in tabular form. Correspondingly, fitted percentiles are shown on separate graphs for both of these skinfolds, related to age as well at to standing height of boys or girls.

Acetaminophen associated hepatic injury, Report of two cases showing unusual portal tract reactions.

Two patients experienced acute transient hepatic and renal failure following ingestion of substantial but less than the usually toxic doses of acetaminophen, in both cases associated with heavy acute alcohol intake. One patient developed transient clinical features of chronic active liver disease one month later. Liver biopsy specimens from both patients taken after the acute episodes revealed, in addition to the well recognized centrilobular hepatic injury of acetaminophen, unusual portal tract lesions, which resembled chronic active hepatitis in one case. In some patients therapeutic doses of acetaminophen, if taken together with alcohol, may produce acute and chronic liver disease.

The influence of homologous plasma and fetal calf serum on human lymphocytic cortisol metabolism.

The influence of a) tissue culture medium (RPMI), b) homologous plasma (HP), and c) fetal calf serum (FCS) on lymphocytic cortisol metabolism was compared to that of phosphate buffered saline alone. RPMI was found to enhance the conversion rate 1.71 times, whereas HP and FCS enhanced it about 3.2 times. Raising the temperature of the HP and FCS to 100 degrees C before incubation reduced the enhancing effect to the level of that obtained with RPMI.

Metabolism of cortisol by human thrombocytes.

A study was made in order to see whether human thrombocytes are capable to metabolize cortisol. Known concentrations of thrombocytes were incubated with 1.23H-cortisol and the products isolated and identified by t.l.c., paper chromatography, and derivations. Two metabolites were found to be produced by thrombocytes: 20beta-hydroxycortisol and tetrahydrocortisol. The enzymatic nature of the reactions was proved by (1) heat treatment (2) finding out NADPH to be a specific cofactor and (3) the dependence of the activity on the number of thrombocytes in suspensions.

[Twins with congenital oculomotor apraxia (Cogan's syndrome)].

Cogan (1952) described a syndrome he called congenital ocular motor apraxia. The syndrome is characterized by 1. absence of voluntary gaze movements and fast phase of optokinetic response in horizontal direction, 2. typical jerky head movements in attempted gaze to either side, 3. nomral random movements and 4. normal vertical eye movements. A report is given on this disorder in the case of female twins.

Cortisol metabolism in lymphocytes from cancer-bearing patients.

A study was conducted to determine the pattern of cortisol metabolism by lymphocytes obtained from four groups of subjects: 27 male and female patients suffering from various types of malignancy other than malignancy of lymphatic tissues; and 26 healthy male and female controls. Known concentrations of cells were incubated with 1,2-3H-cortisol and the products were isolated by thin-layer and paper chromatography. Three metabolites were found to be produced by lymphocytes from both normal and cancer-bearing patients: 20alpha-hydroxycortisol, 20beta-hydroxycortisol, and tetrahydrocortisol. Cells from the female control group were found to be more active than those from the male controls, while cells from cancer-bearing patients were markedly more active than the normal cells, regardless of sex. It is suggested that this finding of increased metabolism of cortisol by lymphocytes from patients with different types of malignancy other than lymphoma may provide the basis for a new diagnostic aid.

[Radiobiological bases and clinical aspects of radiation therapy with heavy particles (author's transl)].

Our present radiobiological knowledge gives rise to the hope of an amelioration of the local results in radiation therapy by means of new categories of radiations. Neutrons are clinically used to a larger extent already, protons occasionally. The physical characteristics of pi-meson beams are especially favorable. Even considerable ameliorations, however, of the percentage of local healing would increase the survival rate by some few per-cent only.

[Shunt operations of the small intestine in cases of extreme adiposity (author's transl)].

Report is made about 15 patients suffering from most serious adiposity; owing to complete inefficiency of conservative methods of therapy whatsoever, a shunt operation of the small intestine according to Payne Dewind, modified after Baden, was carried out in these patients. After a period of observation, weight decrease amounted to 40 to 50 p.c. of the starting weight. Side effects having manifested immediately after operation, such as weariness, giddy sensations, nausea, flatulence, sweating stages, etc., disappeared after about six months. The highly increased frequency of stools was reduced--after two years--to one to two defectations per day. Increased blood pressure values returned to normal.
