[Radiotherapy in the treatment of breast carcinoma].

In the treatment of breast cancer a radiation therapy is indicated under the following conditions: 1. Postoperative irradiation only of the regional lymph-nodes also in stage I (T1, N0). 2. Postoperative irradiation of the regional lymph-nodes and the thorax wall in cases with great primary tumours (T2), in cases with involved axillary lymph-nodes and, of course, in all cases with "grave signs". 3. Preoperative irradiation only in those cases when it seems possible that an inoperable tumour would become operable. 4. As the sole local treatment only in cases with very large inoperable tumours or in special cases (e.g. very high risc or refusal of the operation). 5. As local treatment of a local recidive or of isolated metastases. 6. As supporting local therapy (e.g. threatening fracturation of our fracturated bone metastases; brain metastases) in cases of generalized metastatic disease treated by hormonal or cytostatic therapy.

[Experimental determination of blood-alcohol metabolism with dogs in haemorrhagic shock (author's transl)].

Ethanol at a dosage of 3 g/kg reduced body weight was injected i.v. into mongrel dogs resulting in a blood alcohol concentration of approximately 2.9 mg/ml. One hour after injection the dogs were anaesthetized with halothane-N20/02 and blood was withdrawn until the blood pressure was reduced to 40 mmHg. This usually required removal of about 30 - 40% of the total blood volume. The resulting haemorrhagic shock was ascertained by monitoring blood pH, pCO2, pO2, lactate, pyruvate and blood electrolytes. A blood specimen for enzymatic alcohol determination (ADH) was obtained every 30 min over a period of 3 hours. Compared with equally dosed controls the dogs in haemorrhagic shock showed a significant (p = 0.005) reduction of the blood alcohol decay rate (beta) which is explained by 1) the diminished blood flow through the liver and 2) the hypoxaemic metabolic situation in shock.

[Peak expiratory flow rate among Swiss boys and girls between 4 to 19 1/2 years of age domiciled in the Canton of Geneva in 1972].

Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) was measured by means of a Wright peak flow meter on a sample of 2865 boys and 2712 girls selected at random in the Canton of Geneva, Switzerland (resident population of Swiss children and adolescents aged 4-19 1/2 in 1972). Technique of measurements and statistical analysis are described with an aim at standardization. Expected percentiles of PEFR (50, 25, 10 and 2.5) versus standing height are presented in tabular form for boys and girls separately. Nomograms are given allowing graphical determination of expected PEFR percentiles in either sex for any given standing height.

[Stimulus deprivation amblyopia (author's transl)].

36 patients who had unilateral occlusion early in life were examined. Only 1 deprivation amblyopia due to unilateral occlusion during 9 weeks was found. Deprivation amblyopias did not occur after unilateral occlusion for periods up to 10 days.

[Isolation, identification and quantitative determination of lysolecithin in the human gastric juice].

Lysolecithin was isolated and identified from the gastric contents of 5 patients with gastric ulcer and erosive and atrophic gastritis. The methods used involved methanolic extration, column chromatography on silica gel and sephadex gel filtration, followed by preparative thin layer chromatography. Identification of lysolecithin was verified in one sample by thin layer chromatography and elementary analysis. A method for quantitation of lysolecithin in human gastric fluid for routine clinical analysis is described, based on the procedure used for identification of this phospholipid. Further, a hemolysis test is proposed for screening gastric contents for lysolecithin concentrations above approximately 10 mg/100 ml. With the quantitative method, an average concentration of 66.1 mg of lysolecithin in 100 ml gastric content was found in the group of 5 patients. The screening test was positive in all 5 samples, but was negative with native gastric juice in 25 persons serving as controls. When the gastric fluid of the controls was concentrated, however, 9 samples gave a positive hemolytic reaction. From these 9 specimens, the lysolecithin concentration was found to average 0.9 mg/100 ml. These findings afford evidence that lysolecithin may be involved as a factor in the pathogenesis of gastric ulceration.

[The results of surgical treatment of convergent strabismus (author's transl)].

From the results of 628 operations on strabismus convergens, the individual corrections were related to the achieved reduction of the angle of deviation. The evaluation showed that strabismus operations may be well dosed not only with a view to a general improvement of the squint angle but also as a specific influence on the squint angle as to distant vision and near vision.
