[Trials to eliminate the sex odor of growing boars through active immunization with an androstenone-protein conjugate].

Determination of immunogenicity in rabbit was followed by the use of 5 alpha-Androst-16-en-3-on cattle serum albumin conjugate (AC-) in Freund's adjuvant for active immunisation of young growing boars against boar pheromone. Two experiments were undertaken. Five boars, aged 140 days, were involved in the first experiment. They received six AC- doses in intervals of 14 days (4 mg, 5 mg, 6 mg, 7 mg, 8 mg, 9 mg). Each of the doses was applied to four points, two of them subcutaneous and two intramuscular. In the second experiment, four boars, aged 121 days, received 40 mg AC- each in eight applications, among them three injections in intervals of one week, followed by a pause of two weeks, another three injections again in intervals of one week, and two injections in intervals of four weeks. Another group of four animals received 20 mg AC- in four applications in intervals of four weeks. Five control boars were included in the first experiment and four in the second. Immune response of the experimental animals was detected neither by immunoelectrophoresis nor by radio-immuno-assay. Pheromones in fat samples were determined by means of gas chromatography during treatment and after slaughter. They were increased in some of the cases, albeit not significantly. The nuclear diameters of the interstitional cells of Leydig in testicular sections differed but little, with no significance being recorded.

[Acute renal failure in alcoholic myopathy (author's transl)].

Two chronic alcoholics developed acute renal failure from alcoholic myopathy (acute alcohol-induced rhabdomyolysis). Severe muscle pain developed and was associated with transitory oligo-anuric renal failure, requiring dialysis in one patient. In addition to the typical history and clinical symptoms, excessive elevation of muscle enzymes, especially creatine-kinase, and the appearance of myoglobin in serum are characteristic. Brown discoloration of the urine and a falsely positive test for "blood" due to the presence of myoglobin in urine in the absence of red blood cells are also typical. Definite changes can be demonstrated histologically and electromyographically during the acute stage. It is likely that this condition is more frequent than the sparsity of published reports indicates.

[Radioimmunoassay for human myoglobin: methodology and diagnostic significance in myocardial infarction (author's transl)].

A radioimmunoassay was developed to determine serum myoglobin (SMb). 50 healthy persons showed values between 0 and 90 ng/ml. Serial tests of 10 patients following acute myocardial infarction or during angina pectoris (AP) indicated that SMb reached pathological values before CK and CK-MB (average 250 +/- 95 ng/ml at the time of hospitalisation which corresponds to 3.3 +/- 1.4 h after beginning of angina pectoris). At hospitalisation the simultaneously determined CK was within normal limits and reached pathological values only 6.2 +/- 1.9 h after the onset of angina. Maximum of SMb was 506 +/- 194 ng/ml occurring 8.8 +/- 2.8 h after beginning of AP, maximum of CK was 905 +/- 475 mU/ml occurring 20.0 +/- 7.8 h after AP. CK-MB and CK differed only slightly in their time course. One patient with severe AP had pathologically increased SMb values whilst all other enzymes were completely normal. Methodical and clinical results are discussed.

[Identification of neurosecretory reservoirs in the mayfly Ephemera danica Müll. (ephemeroptera: ephemeridae) (author's transl)].

Neurosecretory reservoirs were found in the head of Ephemera danica. In the region where the nervus corporis cardiaci 1 is leaving the brain, the diameter of this nerve increases considerably. Different types of axons were observed, filled with great amounts of electron opaque secretory granules with mean diameters of 170 nm and 110 nm, respectively. Another neurosecretory reservoir is situated in the rostral part of the corpus cardiacum containing a secretory material of a different kind. Most of the granules have diameters of about 90 nm, and are electron opaque. A relatively small number of axons contains nearly electron lucent vesicles with the same mean diameter.
