In the majority of patients with lympho- and reticulum cell sarcomas, high numbers of B-lymphocytes were found in affected lymph nodes, but were rarely observed in the peripheral blood. In chronic lymphocytic leukaemia receptor properties of B-lymphocytes were defective in several aspects. In patients with Hodgkin's disease the relative number of both lymphocyte populations in the blood were within the normal range and in lymph node suspensions marked alterations were unusual. A preferential proliferation of T-lymphocytes, perhaps accompanied by a reduced life span, was however suggested by double labelling experiments.

The carbon-13 spin-lattice relaxation times (T1) of glycine have been measured as a function of pD and concentration. Contrary to previously reported findings, no significant dependence was observed on either pD or concentration. In addition, the T1 values reported here are much longer than those published earlier. The discrepancies arise from the presence of paramagnetic impurities in the earlier samples. For the carboxyl carbon, dipole-dipole relaxation is dominant in both D2O and H2O solution, and in H2O there is a significant intermolecular dipolar contribution. Proton and oxygen relaxation times have also been measured. These, along with the carbon relaxation data, allow a discussion of the dynamics of glycine in solution.
Of 71 patients showing a negative direct antiglobulin (Coombs') test (DAT) before administration of cephalexin (CEX) three developed a positive DAT after therapy with this drug (4 percent). No case of immunohemolytic anemia was observed. The sera of the patients with a positive DAT reacted with cephalothin-coated red cells producing high titers, with penicillin cells normal titers and with CEX cells low titers. Since the red cell eluates of these patients did not give significant reactions with red cells sensitized with CEX, cephalothin and penicillin, a nonimmunological mechanism for the development of the positive DAT in these patients has to be assumed.
Blood lymphocytes of normal individuals and of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia were evaluated for their blastogenic response to insoluble PHA. In at least preferential stimulation of normal B-lymphocytes was observed, whereas leukemic lymphocytes were almost insensitive. This result supports the hypothesis of a functionally defective B-lymphocyte population in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
We investigated the number of DNA-synthesizing T lymphocytes in the blood of patients with Hodgkin's disease, with infectious mononucleosis and in normal controls. T cells were characterized by their ability to form rosettes with unsensitized neuramidase-treated sheep red blood cells. Cells in DNA synthesis were evaluated autoradiographically after in vitro incubation with [3H]thymidine. Our results indicated a preferential proliferation of T lymphocytes in the blood of patients with Hodgkin's disease and infectious mononucleosis and suggested an increased turnover of these cells.

The anti-inflammatory activity of FL 70, a derivative of 2,5-dihydroxy-benzoic acid, was examined in a number of conventional experimental models. In addition, FL-70 was tested for its inhibitory action on enzymes. The results were as follows: 1. The induction of a local inflammatory reaction and the subsequent i.v. injection of trypan blue showed that FL 70 reduces the capillary permeability. 2, FL-70 significantly suppresses exudation in the formalin-induced peritonitis of the rat. 3. A slight inhibition of an edema in the footpad of the rat induced by formalin-dextran was not shown to be statistically significant. 4. Local swelling could be markedly inhibited in the turpentine-oil induced inflammatory reaction of the rabbit. 5. Exudation and formation of granulomatous tissue was inhibited in Selye's granuloma. 6. FL-70 markedly inhibited the local inflammatory reaction accompanying the cutaneous reaction in experimental vaccinia infection of the rabbit skin. The size of the infiltration after intracutaneous infection of the virus was not reduced. 7. FL-70 could not prevent the onset of clinical signs, if administered in experimental allergic encephalitis. 8. The activity of acid phosphatase was inhibited by FL-70. Alcaline phosphatase, cholinesterase, leucin aminopeptidase, glucose-6- phosphatase-dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH), trypsin and chymotrypsin were unaffe-ted. FL-70 inhibits the following, G-6-PDH activated reduction process: glucose-6-phosphate (see article).
