Effects and Absorption of Sethoxydim in Cell Cycle Progression of Corn (Zea mays) and Pea (Pisum sativum).

The mechanisms of selective herbicidal action of sethoxydim were investigated by using cultured root tips of corn (Zea mays L. cv Goldencrossbantam) and pea (Pisum sativum L. cv Alaska). Meristematic cells in the cultured roots were arrested in G(1) and G(2) of the cell division cycle by sucrose starvation and resumed growth and cell division (proliferation) when sucrose was provided. Corn root growth after sucrose addition was inhibited by sethoxydim at concentrations of 0.01 micromolar and greater when roots were treated in the presence of sucrose but was not inhibited at 10 micromolar sethoxydim when they were treated during sucrose starvation. Greater absorption of [(14)C]sethoxydim into the meristematic region of corn roots was observed when cells were in proliferative condition but not when they were arrested by sucrose starvation, whereas no greater absorption of the herbicide into pea meristems was observed in either growth condition. In the cell cycle study, greater absorption of [(14)C]sethoxydim into the corn root meristem was observed at a certain limited time before S (DNA synthesis) stage. The physiological effects and the greater absorption of sethoxydim clearly depended on cell cycle progression of corn root meristem, whereas fatty acid synthesis, as well as its inhibition by sethoxydim, was not associated with either cell cycle progression or greater absorption of the herbicide.

Hypertension in unilateral atrophic kidney secondary to ureteropelvic junction obstruction.

A patient with atrophic unilateral hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction associated with hypertension was successfully treated by nephrectomy. Preoperatively, plasma renin activity was elevated in both the peripheral vein and affected renal vein. Renin concentration in the resected kidney was high, and immunohistochemical localization of renin was observed along the afferent arterioles of the juxtaglomerular apparatus and in arterioles at some distance from the glomeruli.

Cleavage reaction of a synthetic oligoribonucleotide corresponding to the autocleavage site of a precursor RNA from bacteriophage T4.

A fragment (GUUUCGUACAAAC) having a consensus sequence for the self-cleavage domain in a precursor of an RNA molecule from T4-infected Escherichia coli cells (p2Sp1; precursor of species 1) was chemically synthesized and found to be cleaved either between CA (139-140) or between UA (137-138) in the presence of monovalent cations and a non-ionic detergent. The cleaved products had 5'-hydroxyl and 3'-phosphate groups, of which some were in the form 2',3'-cyclic phosphates.

A convenient approach to the synthesis of medium size oligodeoxyribonucleotides by improved new phosphite method.

Improvement of the new phosphite method for the synthesis of oligodeoxyribonucleotides using the deoxyribonucleoside 3'-bis(1,1,1,3,3,3- hexafluoro-2-propyl) phosphite unit has been carried out via the hydrolysis and capping steps, without any side reaction products. The new phosphite unit and capping agent, bis(1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propyl)-2-propyl phosphite, is readily activated by N-methylimdazole under very mild condition on a solid support. This operation involves a one pot reaction, which is an advantage over both the phosphite and H- phosphonate approaches. The mechanism of internucleotidic bond formation of the new phosphite method is also discussed.

[Respiratory function on exercise as a predictor of complications after lung resection].

We studied the correlation between the complications after pulmonary resection and the results of exercise testing and others. The exercise testing was performed preoperatively on 64 patients; 44 lobectomies, 6 bilobectomies and 14 pneumonectomies. The results which had the correlation with postoperative complications were RV/BSA (p less than 0.001), RV/TLC (p less than 0.005), VE/VCO2 (p less than 0.001) and VO2/VE (p less than 0.001). Men had more complications than women (p less than 0.001). And the patients with the past histories concerning cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease and/or diabetes had more chances of complications than the patients without those histories (p less than 0.05). Judging from these results we concluded that the patients with one or more of the following results had more chances of postoperative complications. 1. maximum VO2/VE was less than 40 ml/l. 2. VE/VCO2 was more than 4.0 l/ml. 3. RV/BSA was more than 1.5 l/m2. 4. RV/TLC was more than 45%.

[Influence of residual plaque score during initial treatment on pocket reduction rate at individual tooth surfaces].

The purpose of this study is to examine the relation ship between residual plaque score at an individual tooth surface during initial treatment and the pocket reduction rate at the evaluation time. Thirty-nine adult periodontal patients (mean age 30.2 years) who O'Leary plaque control record (PCR) reached a level of 10% PCR, were selected for this study. A total of 5638 surfaces were monitored by recording probing pocket depths at the disto-buccal (a), mid-buccal (b), mesio-buccal (c), disto-lingual (d), mid-lingual and (e), mesio-lingual (f) regions, and by examining O'Leary plaque control records. The results were as follows: 1) The residual plaque score at all teeth surfaces was 14.74 +/- 19.21%. 2) The lowest plaque score were seen at 54/45, and 21/12. 3) The highest plaque score were seen at 7/7, and 76/67. 4) Well-responding sites that showed a high residual plaque score and a good pocket reduction rate, were 5/5 (initial probing pocket depth 3.0-3.5mm, a), and 4/4 (initial probing pocket depth 3.0-3.5 mm,f; 5.0-5.5 mm, f). 5) 7/7 (initial probing pocket depth 3.0 mm a, b, d), and 7/7 (initial probing pocket depth 3.0-3.5 mm, f) showed a high residual plaque score and a low pocket reduction rate. 6) The normal pocket response occurred at a level of residual plaque score and a low pocket reduction rate. 6) The normal pocket response occurred at a level of residual plaque score of less than 25%. In order to gain good pocket response, it is important to keep the level of residual plaque score at less than 25% rather than to keep the level of PCR at 10% or 20% (as several authors have previously stated). 7) A low residual plaque score during treatment is therefore more important than a low PCR.

[A sudden-death in a case of Arnold-Chiari malformation (type I) with sleep apnea].

UNLABELLED: We presented a sudden-death case of Arnold-Chiari malformation (type 1) accompanied with spina bifida and closed meningomyelocele. Polysomnography revealed the increase of both central and mixed type apneas to compare with the findings of typical Pickwikian syndrome. THE CASE: 30-year-old female without obese or obstruction of upper air way. Spina bifida and closed meningomyelocele at sacral portion were found at her birth. She had no treatment and had not been able to walk because of paralysis at low extremities. Since she was 25-year-old, she had had insomnia which accompanied by choked feelings, palpitations, clumsiness of hands and anxiety. Snoring was light, and she had neither respiratory disturbances nor hypersomnia during awake. She was admitted to our hospital for treatment of decubitus. 2nd June, 1977, she was found acrocyanosis during sleep and immediately she was resurrected. Physical examinations revealed there was no accounting for sudden respiratory arrest: the cardio-pulmonary system was normal during awake and laboratory findings also failed to disclose the episode. But she had slight dysfunctions of lower cranial nerves: fine nystagmus according to the head-position, decreased gag reflex, and paresis in the recurrence nerve of N.XII and etc. Angiography showed communicating hydrocephalus. Though ventriculoperitoneal shunt operation was performed at 8th June, sleep apnea could not be improved. Therefore we examined in order to clarify her sleep apnea. She was not obese, we could not find any obstructions of upper air way. Nocturnal polygraphy was performed at 8th July. The results were summarized as follows: (1) Total sleep time was 293 minutes and numbers of sleep apnea were 134 times.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
