Light- and electron microscopical investigations of the pathogenesis of Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis can support those views which consider the Schwanncells in these tumors to develop from mesenchymal cells, that means from reticular fibroblasts. It seems to be of special interest that these cells while transforming to Schwann cells become successive coated with a glycocalyx (surface coat); The whirle-or onion skin like formation of the tumor cells lead to a splitting of the ground substance into numerous compartments accompanied by a change in ground substance composition. This obviously cohere with an increasing number of mast cells within the tumor. It may be that these arrangements of the tumor tissue plays an important part in tumor growth. With this, the great importance of a regular composition of the extracellular matrix and cell surface coats for an undisturbed flow of information from cell to cell is discussed.

The appendices epiploicae of the colon wall are constituted of three morphologically different types: stalked appendices and others which are attached with their base in longitudinal and vertical direction to the colon axis. The appendices have a characteristic blood supply which varies with the different forms. In difference to other regions of the fat-organ in the human body an increased number of interstitial cells between capillaries and fat-cells can be found. These cells are obviously inserted in the insulin-controlled fat metabolism of the appendices. The interpretation of these morphological findings is that functionally the appendices may play a role in the resorption of water and electrolytes from the colon contents.

The trophoblast giant cells of the mouse placenta are mitotically inactive. Nucleolar RNA synthesis is apparently at a standstill. The high nuclear DNA contents of these cells shown by 3H-thymidine marking is conceived by us to be a synthesis of metabolic nuclear DNA. Thus protein synthesis in trophoblast giant cells has been taken over by a metabolic DNA.
Preterminal nerve fibers of the peripheral vegetative nervous system make inmediate contact (neuro-effector-areas) to interstitial cells (I.C.). This connection is characterized through a common glycocalyx with the nerve fiber. The I.C. are specific innervated cells and differ morphologically from Schwann-cells, fibrocytes, and histiocytes. The I.C. are able to come into morphologically different contacts with neighbouring cells by microvilli-like cell protrusions. These neighbouring cells then are able to contact other cells by themselves. The results are interpreted in the sense of electro-mechanical feed-back system of information processing in the vegetative periphery.

Our observations demonstrate an intimate relationship between peripheral nerve fibers and mast cells. In addition, mast cells in various organs influence both the small blood vessels and the organ parenchyma cells. These relations are interpreted in the sence of a neuro-hormonale feedback-system.
The projecting of an anamnestic questionnaire concerning angiocardiopathies for purposes of screening for the 8 most important groups of angiocardiopathies was performed in two simultaneous stages--model experiments and population experiment. In the model stage, which is the topic of this paper, apart from investigations of reproducibility and controls of voluntary falsifications of answers above all an examination concerning the significance of the data was carried out. The methods used for this--analysis of the complaints of typical groups of patients (analysis of discriminancy) and analysis of experiences of recognized experts of angiocardiopathies (scale graduation of symptoms)--were discussed and first results described.
After a short reference to the significance of the screening examinations and early diagnosis for the secondary prevention in disease of the heart and the circulatory system the authors give a survey on the methods of screening examinations and the early diagnosis bening at disposal nowadays in organic disturbances of the arterial bloods supply. Anamnestic, clinical and paraclinical methods are cited, in which cases the paraclinical methods are subdivided into haemostasiological, haemodynamic and biochemical examinations.
In general the anamnesis meets all requirements which are put to a screening method; however, special problems arise when the anamnesis is made by means of a questionnaire. The team which gives the report had projected a questionnaire for 8 cardiovascular groups of diagnosis (ischaemic heart disease, hypertension, functional, inflammatory and pulmonary heart disease, disturbances of the peripheral arterial blood supply, cerebrovascular insufficiency and venous diseases). This questionnaire was reduced and qualified and tested on test persons of a Berlin enterprise. A final judgment concerning the use of the anamnesis as screening method cannot be given at present. However, it limns oneself already that it is possible with its help to establish many endangered persons and patients and to subject them to the primary and secondary prevention.
By means of comparative ontogenetical findings and organ cultured whole hearts of tadpoles (Xenopus laevis) there has been evidence that the localization of the endocardial cushions in the embryonic heart tube of landliving vertebrates is phylogenetically caused. On the contrary ontogenetically the shape of these cushions are dependent on the varying hemodynamic conditions in heart development. By this the anlage of endocardial cushions are the presupposition of the phylogeny and ontogeny in the septation of the heart in tetrapodes.

The observations demonstrate that mast cells do not only show intimate morphological associations to peripheral nerve fibers but also contact basement membranes of capillaries and cell surface coats of organ parenchyma cells. Interpreting these results as a neuro-hormonale feedback system mast cells might be regarded as both receptor organs and regulators of metabolism.
Basallaminae of Schwanncell ensheathed axons and "naked" axons respectively have contact areas between the endformation of the peripheral vegetative nervious system and gröundsubstance. The latter, however, merges directly in the glycocalyces of connective tissue cells and organ cells. These cells may be related to one another (i.e. microvilli, cell processes, glycocalyces etc.) or will form "neuroeffector areas" together with pre- and terminal peripheral vegetative nerve fibers. On the other hand axon swellings might discharge their neurotransmitter substances into the ground substance in such way the neighbouring cells might be influenced ("synapse on distance"). Mast cells may act as regulators of the relationships in the groundsubstance. This because of the connections of mast cells with the peripheral nervous system and consequently with the CNS and the hormonale system. Thus the vegetative periphery as a whole would form a functional unit.
