[Antibacterial activity of N-formimidoyl-thienamycin in comparison with other beta-lactam antibiotics against clinical problem strains (author's transl)].

The efficacy of N-formimidoyl-thienamycin (MK 0787) has been tested against 549 cultures of different species, which often cause therapeutic problems. Included were 286 mezlocillin-resistant strains, 100 Serratia marcescens and 66 Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The minimal inhibitory concentration ranged between 0.06 and 4 micrograms/ml by means of the agar-dilution-method. Resistant strains were not observed. Among the 11 beta-lactam- and aminoglycoside-antibiotics tested N-formimidoyl-thienamycin was the most effective with the broadest spectrum.

[Susceptibility testing with fosfomycin in an agar diffusion test on Mueller-Hinton agar].

A disc loading of 50 microgram fosfomycin + 50 microgram glucose-6-phosphate is recommended for disc susceptibility testing. Regression analyses for the correlation of the diameter of inhibition zones with the MIC result in the following equations. For Pseudomonas aeruginosa x = -0.15 y + 16.67 and for Enterobacteriacae plus gram-positive cocci x = -0.34 y + 19.55 (x = log2MIC + 9; y = diameter of inhibition zone in mm). The correlation coefficients are r = -0.9219 and -0.8627 respectively. The analysis yield the following zone diameter interpretive standards. For Pseudomonas aeruginosa less than 12 mm resistant, greater than or equal to 25 mm susceptible, and for Enterobacteriaceae plus gram-positive cocci less than 14 mm resistant, greater than or equal to 20 mm susceptible.

Distribution of C-band heterochromatin in the ZW sex chromosomes of European and American eels (Anguillidae, Teleostomi).

The ZW sex chromosomes of the European eel, Anguilla anguilla, and the American eel, A. rostrata, were examined with C-band and fluorescent staining to demonstrate the C-band heterochromatin. The W as well as Z chromosomes in both species are C-band negative except for a small amount of C-band heterochromatin in the centromeric region, in contrast to the W or Y elements of most other vertebrates. No fluorescing W-associated body is evident either in interphase nuclei or in metaphase plates. The ZW chromosomes of the two species have substantially similar size, morphology, and patterns of C-band heterochromatin. Karyologic and evolutionary implications are discussed.

[Bacteriological in vitro studies with a new cephalosporin: cefotiam (author's transl)].

MIC determinations with the dilution method using DST-agar show that 7 beta-[2-amino-thiazol-4-yl)acet-amido-3-less than ([1-(2-dimethylaminoethyl)-1H-tetrazol-5-yl]thio)methyl greater than-ceph-3-em-4-carboxylic acid (cefotiam) is approximately ten times more active than cefoxitin or cefuroxime against non-selected bacterial isolates. Cefotiam is also significantly more active than cefoxitin or cefoperazone against mezlocillin- and piperacillin-resistant cultures. The determination of susceptibility to cefotiam gives reliable results with 30 microgram discs. Inhibition zones of up to 12 mm (corresponding to MIC superior or equal to 64 microgram/ml) should be considered as resistance and zones larger or equal to 18 mm (corresponding to MIC inferior or equal to 8 microgram/ml) as susceptibility.

[Resistance of Haemophilus influenzae to antibiotics in the Federal Republic of Germany (author's transl)].

In a multi-center study 523 strains of H. influenzae and H. parainfluenzae isolated from patients in eight towns of the Federal Republic of Germany were tested for their sensitivity to 15 different chemotherapeutic agents. 1.7% of the strains were resistant to ampicillin, 1,5% to chloramphenicol and 2.5% to tetracycline. All ampicillin-resistant strains produced beta-lactamase. For the first time, multiple resistant strains were isolated: two against ampicillin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline; one in addition also against co-trimoxazole. It is likely that there will be a spread of such resistant strains.

[Bacteriological study on cefadroxil in vitro. Correlation between diameter of inhibition zone and inhibitory concentration (author's transl)].

There are only slight differences between the geometrical means of minimum inhibitory concentrations of (6R,7R)-7-[(R)-2-amino-2-2(p-hydroxyphenyl)-acetamido]-3-methyl-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid (cefadroxil, Bidocef) and cefalexin against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria freshly isolated from clinical material. Enterococci are more susceptible to cefadroxil. Considering the different break point, cefadroxil is on the whole more effective than cefalexin, in particular so against Proteus mirabilis, Enterobacter, Citrobacter and Escherichia coli. With the aid of the described regression analysis a meaningful interpretation of the results of the cefadroxil agar diffusion test is possible.

[Bacteriological studies in vitro on cefsulodin, a new cephalosporin active against Pseudomonas (author's transl)].

In vitro comparison of MIC from cefsulodin, cefataxime, and azlocillin for 265 strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa demonstrates that of the available beta-lactam antibiotics cefsulodin has the highest anti-pseudomonal activity. In the agar-diffusion test (30 micrograms disc) cefsulodin zone diameters greater than or equal to 12 mm (corresponding to MIC less than or equal to 32 micrograms/ml) are considered as showing susceptibility of the organisms.
