[Determination of osthol and imperatorin in Cnidium monnieri (L.) cuss by fluorometry TLC scanning].

The main active constituents--osthol and imperatorin were isolated from Cnidium monnieri (L.) Cuss and then used as standards for their determination in the crude drug by fluorometry TLCS. The fructus Cnidii was macerated with ethanol overnight and the ethanolic extract was spotted on a silica gel G-CMC Na plate. The plate was developed with n-hexane-ethyl acetate (7:3). The spot was excited by light of 365 nm, and determined in a Shimadzu CS-930 TLC scanner using a No. 2 filter. The peak areas of the two components were obtained, external standard method was used in the determination. The root, stem, leaf and flower of this plant were shown to contain no osthol and imperatorin, and the seed was found to contain 2.0-3.2% of osthol and 1.8-2.5% of imperatorin.

Vascular architecture of the human optic chiasm and bitemporal field defects.

The system of blood supply of the optic chiasma was studied on 85 human fresh bodies by several methods. The optic chiasma is supplied by the Willis' circle, arterioles from which, after forming anastomosis at two levels, enter the chiasma and break into capillaries. The authors found that the median portion of chiasma is a weak point of microcirculation, as demonstrated by rarefied and transverse capillaries. When the blood supply of chiasma is compromised by lesions near the sella turcica, this weak point of microcirculation is apt to be disturbed first and becomes ischemic, causing disorders of the crossing optic nerve fibers in the median portion of chiasma, and the characteristic bitemporal visual field defects appear.

[Study on correction of abnormal fetal position by applying ginger paste at zhihying acupoint A. Report of 133 cases].

Applying fresh ginger paste at Zhihying acupoint before retiring, we treated 133 pregnant women (28 to 38 weeks' gestation) with breech position. There were 118 primigravidas. 238 untreated pregnant women (28 to 32 weeks' gestation) with breech position made up the control group. 113 out of the treated pregnant women had normal fetal position after treatment with 77.4% of correction rate. 48 out of the 113 pregnant women whose fetal position corrected by treatment only received once therapy, accounting for 42.5% of cured cases. Spontaneous correction of fetal position happened in 123 pregnant women of the control group with 51.6% of correction rate. There was a significant difference in the correction rate between study and control groups. (P less than 0.01), suggesting that this therapy is easy, economical, safe, and suitable to popularization at the basic level.

[The comparison of changes of the facial temperature after acupuncturing point of hand and foot-yangming meridians by the thermography].

With thermographic technique, We observed changes of the facial temperature after acupuncturing Hegu (L14) and Zusanli (S36) in 65 patients (103 cases in all) with facial nerve paralysis. The observation showed that the average of Hegu group was higher than that of Zusanli group. The result explained that the effect of acupuncture at points of hand-yangming meridian was bigger than that of foot-yangming meridian on the facial temperature.

Research on the acupuncture principles and meridian phenomena by means of infrared thermography.

In this study, the observation on acupuncture manner, the specificity of acupoints, maintaining needle and "MiuCi" needling, manual and electrical acupuncture, the thermal characteristics of meridians etc. were carried out in order to apply the thermography in the research of principles of acupuncture and meridian phenomena thus create a way to approach to the mechanism of acupuncture effect. Results showed a good prospect for this technique being widely used in the investigation of acupuncture and meridians and its practical significance. It's also identified that the thermography with the advantages of straight-forward, objective and simple fitted to be used in the research of acupuncture and meridians.

Effects of the heat-tonification method on the surface temperature of the body observed by infra-red thermography.

With the infra-red thermography, 73 tests of the effect of Heat-Tonification maneuvers on body surface temperature were made. The experiments showed that application of Heat-Tonification produced marked elevation of temperature at the site of puncture, over the face and the front of the neck. The differences between pre- and post-needling temperatures were statistically significant (P less than 0.02 and P less than 0.01). Furthermore, 44.8% of the tests showed elevation of temperature over the trunk and extremities, and the distribution of temperature elevation followed the course of the meridians mostly. The findings demonstrated that the Heat-Tonification method mobilized Qi and activated Blood through influence over the vegetative nervous system that led to readjustment of blood circulation.

Changes of peripheral T-cell subsets in asplenic W256 tumor-bearing rats.

In exploring the mechanism of the effect of splenectomy on tumor growth, splenectomized rats and other control rats were implanted subcutaneously with Walker 256 carcinosarcoma cells (5 x 10(5] on day 10 after splenic operation; meanwhile, peripheral T-lymphocyte subsets were analysed successively. It was found that splenectomy enhanced the rate of tumor appearance and mean tumor diameter and disturbed the equation of T-lymphocyte subsets in peripheral blood, i.e., a subnormal level of Th/Ts ratio. Interestingly, a significant correlation was noted between decreasing values of Th/Ts ratio and increasing average diameters of implanted tumor in splenectomized rats, but not in sham-splenectomized or nonoperated rats with tumor growth. In spleen cells from tumor-bearing rats, a distinct increase of B-lymphocytes and a decrease of T cells were demonstrated. Data from this investigation provide striking evidence that a relationship exists between enhancement of tumor growth and disproportion of T-lymphocyte subsets in peripheral blood and offer some reasonable explanation for the causes of the promotive role of tumor growth following splenectomy.

Immunoglobulins and complement in splenectomised and autotransplanted subjects.

Serum immunoglobulins and complement factors were investigated retrospectively in 35 splenectomised (n = 28) and autoreplanted (n = 7) patients following trauma. The main deficiency of the immune system following splenectomy was a reduction in the concentrations of serum IgM, C3, and Factor B with normal IgG, IgA and C4 values. These changes were not correlated with the time elapsed after splenectomy. However, patients who had splenic tissue autoreplantation had normal values of immunoglobulins and complement factors compared with healthy controls. Splenic replantation may be able to stop a fall in immunoglobulin and complement factor values after splenectomy.

[Infrared spectrometry determination of polymorphic form C in mebendazole].

Mebendazole displays polymorphism. There are three polymorphic forms (A, B and C) which were identified by means of IR and X-ray diffraction techniques. Procedures have been worked out to determine the amount of the polymorphic form C in pure mebendazole and in tablets. The sample (30 mg) and internal standard (K3Fe(CN)6, 6 mg) were mulled in 0.25 ml of mineral oil and placed between KBr plates separated by a 0.1 mm lead spacer. The spectra were recorded by the absorbance mode between 850-800 cm-1 and 2150-2050 cm-1. Both of the base lines are the horizontal line from 2140 cm-1 peak valley and from 842 cm-1 peak valley. The values of the absorbance difference were measured at 834 and 842 cm-1, 2114 and 2140 cm-1 respectively. The percent content of the polymorphic form C was calculated by the method of internal standard. This analytical approach is simple and the results are satisfactory.

Study on glucocorticoid receptors during intestinal ischemia shock and septic shock.

Glucocorticoid receptors (GCRs) were studied by the radioligand binding assay in peripheral leukocytes obtained from dogs during intestinal ischemia shock and obtained from patients with septic shock. Sixteen healthy adult mongrel dogs were divided into two groups at random. The model of intestinal ischemia shock was made by occluding both superior mesenteric artery and vein in the occlusion group. Leukocytic GCRs and plasma cortisol were measured just at the time when mean arterial pressure (MAP) was 13.3 kPa (100 mmHg), 6.6 kPa (50 mmHg), and 3.3 kPa (25 mmHg). Clinically leukocytic GCRs were measured in ten patients in septic shock during hypotensive period and in ten normal volunteers used as control subjects. The results showed that in the occlusion group of animals, the levels of GCRs decreased progressively after shock; there was a significant positive correlation between the extent of reduction of MAP and that of GCRs. Leukocytes from the occlusion group contained significantly lower levels of GCRs than those from controls. The results of clinical observation confirmed the reduction of GCR levels in patients with septic shock. This paper reports for the first time the finding of secondary disorder of GCRs during septic shock, advances a new hypothesis concerning the pathophysiology of shock at the receptor level, and offers the experimental evidence for early use of massive doses of glucocorticoid (GC) in dealing with septic shock.
