Barium enema in the diagnostic work-up of gynecologic patients.

We evaluated the role of the barium enema in the diagnostic work-up of 120 gynecologic patients. Major abnormalities were detected in 10% of patients. We conclude that patients presenting with pelvic tumors or suspected gynecologic malignancies should have a pre-therapeutic barium enema in order to define the extent of the disease and to rule out colon cancer.

Experiences with the human tumor colony-forming assay in gynecologic malignancies.

Tumor samples from 74 patients with gynecologic malignancies including breast cancer were processed in a soft agar colony-forming assay. None of the samples resulted in a pure single cell suspension. Of the 10 samples meeting our criteria of evaluability for chemosensitivity testing, only 5 samples showed in vitro sensitivity to any drug. Of the 3 evaluable correlations between in vitro and in vivo results, 2 were correct. Due to the low rate of evaluable samples the assay has only limited value in the assignment of chemotherapeutic drugs for patients treated at our institution.

The impact of morphological features on the prognosis of patients suffering from breast cancer.

A group of 156 patients suffering from breast cancer with axillary metastases was studied for connections between the morphological structure of the tumor and the spreading of the disease on the one hand and duration of remission on the other hand. The statistical analysis shows that the summary WHO-grading proves to be the most indicative prognostic factor next to the number of affected lymph nodes and tumor size. Definition of a prognostic index from these factors leads to a more precise prognostical distinction of the collective.

[Non-diethylstilbestrol-induced adenosis of the vagina].

A case of spontaneous vaginal adenosis in a 39-year old patient is reported. This entity is infrequently observed in comparison to the larger number of vaginal adenosis due to intrauterine DES exposure. The literature concerning the origin of these spontaneous proliferations is controversial: remnants of Wolffian or Müllerian ducts are thought to be the source, as well as metaplastic or prosoplastic changes. According to stage and extent of the disease, the individual case can be categorised into the following subgroups: cystic, florid, adenomatous and carcinomatous adenosis. Benign courses are far more frequent. Symptoms are observed only in advanced cases; therapy depends on histology, extent, and symptoms.

Diagnosis, Differential↗

[Radical tumor operation in limited ovarian cancer].

Concluding and from examples in the literature the necessity of lymphadenectomy, omentectomy, operative approach, removal of the peritoneal lining of the minor pelvis in stages I and II are herewith described. The value of the 'optimal tumor reduction' for stage III is also discussed.
