To test psychodynamic hypotheses about the etiology of the borderline syndrome, female borderline patients were asked whether they remembered their mothers and fathers as having responded with approval, disinterest, or criticism to dependent and independent behaviors. Comparisons were made with a group of normal controls and with a group of neurotics and patients with personality disorders. The main finding was that borderline patients remembered their fathers as neglectful. The recollections did not support an overprotection hypothesis.

Ipratropium bromide is a bronchodilator whose effect has been compared with beta agonists but not with theophylline. Twelve asthmatics were given four two-week courses of the different combinations of ipratropium (40 micrograms in two puffs), theophylline capsules, and their corresponding placebos in a random, double-blind fashion. There was a significant increase in FEV1 and MMFR 60 minutes after theophylline was administered (p less than 0.05) when measured after one and two weeks of therapy. FEV1 and MMFR were significantly increased (p less than 0.05) 30 and 60 minutes after ipratropium inhalation and this increase was significantly greater when the patient had also been taking theophylline compared with placebo capsules (p less than 0.05). There was no toxicity associated with this combination. The synergism demonstrated may be related to the time sequence of drug administration, mechanical or cellular factors.

We studied the effect of ipratropium on exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) at cold or warm temperatures. Although pulmonary function was better with ipratropium, its benefit was related to pre-exercise bronchodilation and not prevention of EIB. Ipratropium did not affect the augmented EIB in cold weather. Therefore, these phenomena are not primarily mediated via cholinergic mechanisms.
Two hundred and two sera from Orang Asli patients living in malarious areas were tested by the washed-cell, thick smear malaria IFA test. These patients were infected with P.vivax, P.falciparum and some with both parasites. Antibodies to the homologous antigens were detected at titres of 1 : 16-1 : 4096 about 60 days after onset of treatment. Eighteen months after cure antibody levels had fallen to lower levels of reactivity.
A randomized double-blind study about the therapy of the cirrhosis of the liver shows a significant higher surviving rate of the alcoholic cirrhosis in the group treated with Silymarin. This result can be well explained by the protective influence of this substance against toxic injuries. The etiology of many chronic liver diseases is uncertain and therefore it is advisable to try the therapy also in other cases. The conditions of the study are exactly reported. The influence on the clinic of the disease and on the laboratory data obtained in many controls will be published later, because the statistical analysis needs some more time.
Amino acid levels of biological fluids are usually determined by the classical ion exchange procedure. Although the gas chromatographic method offers the advantage of higher sensitivity and speed of analysis, apparent difficulties in achieving accuracy and precision similar to the ion exchange procedure prevented its acceptance as a routine method. The main problems associated with gas chromatographic amino acid analysis were overcome by application of a novel approach called enantiomer-labelling: the optical antipode to each L-amino acid is added to the sample prior to the clean-up and serves as an internal standard having identical chemical properties. The enantiomers of all amino acids are separated by gas chromatography on capillaries coated with a thermally stable, chiral stationary phase. The shortcomings previously inherent in the gas chromatographic method are thus eliminated. Accuracy and precision of the new procedure are equal or better than of the classical ion exchange method.
3-Methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylethylene glycol (MHPG) labelled with six deuterium atoms ([2H6]MHPG) was infused into two female greyhound dogs. Plasma and urine were analyzed for endogenous MHPG and [2H6]MHPG and their conjugates by the technique of selected ion monitoring gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. This analysis showed that the major forms of MHPG and [2H6]MHPG in the plasma and urine of the greyhounds were the sulphate conjugates. However, the plasma concentration of [2H6]MHPG sulphate increased continuously during the infusion period and the renal clearance of this compound was found to be much less than that of the endogenous sulphate. The explanation that his was due either to saturation of a renal transport mechanism or to a deuterium isotope effect was eliminated. Stereochemical analysis showed that, while the [2H6]MHPG used for infusion was a racemic mixture of two stereoisomers, much more of the nature(-)stereoisomer of [2H6]MHPG sulphate was excreted in the dog urine. It was also shown that both the (+) and (-)stereoisomers of [2H6]MHPG sulphate were sulphoconjugated at the 4-position of the aromatic ring.

The concentrations of volatile hydrocarbons were studied in breath samples from patients before and after anaesthesia. In patients to whom halothane was administered, there was a significant increase in the concentration of isobutene (from 0.43 +/- 0.09 to 4.66 +/- 2.22 nmol litre-1). There was no change in the concentration of isobutene in six patients anaesthetized with ketamine and diazepam. The concentrations of ethane and pentane were not altered significantly in either group.
This is a report on first results of a research project which tries to develop statements concerning the transferability of the concept of normalization as a basis of the care for the mentally handicapped from the Scandinavian into the German context. The intercultural comparative study is chosen as the appropriate method. This is done on the basis of a socio-political comparison of the situation and practice of public services in both countries, as well as on the basis of a comparison of selected service regions. In this paper we do report on results on that socio-political comparison. There is a difference between the comparison of structural characteristics of social systems, the comparison of socio-political measures and the comparison of social tendencies and problems which have effects on the situation of the mentally retarded. In the centre of this statement is a nearby aspect of the structures' comparison, that is the comparison of the objects of public care for the mentally handicapped in Denmark and the FRG. These aims are defined within the specific arguments for legislative standardisations. In Denmark this aim is paraphrased by the term "normalization", which means to arrange the life of a handicapped as normal as possible. In Germany there is an alignment about the objective "rehabilitation", which is formulated most comprehensively as the integration of the handicapped into work, profession and society. An analysis of the normative contents shows a close conformity in the conceptions of the aims. In contrast to this we find practically basic organisational and structural differences in the systems of public services which in essence are connected with the different social systems of both countries and the different development of reform processes in this subject.
The paper first argues that under conditions of domestication animals are necessarily selected (incidentally or otherwise) for (1) responsitivity to a broad band of stimuli and (2) behavioral plasticity. The consequent tractability of domestic animals is contrasted with the stimulus-boundness and response stereotypy of the fixed action patterns observed in wild animal behavior. It is suggested that this difference accounts for the differential trainability of wolves and dogs. The second section of the paper presents observational evidence that although capacity for observational learning. It is then noted that since observational learning requires recognition of means-ends relationships this conclusion is inconsistent with the claim that wolf behavior is largely instinct-bound. Finally, these conclusions are reconciled by hypothesizing that the wolf possesses a "duplex" information-processing system, a primitive "instinctual" system that mediates basic survival responses and a more recently acquired "cognitive" system that evolved as the wolf became a group hunter. Neurobehavioral and developmental comparisons of wolf and dog suggest that these two systems have become integrated into a single scheme in the course of the dog's domestication.
