A report on clinical course and morphological findings in a case of Alexander's disease is given in a boy aged 4 year and 6 months. The disease started in the second month with progressive retardation. At the age of 13 months, a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt was performed because of dilatation of ventricles. Death occurred due to cerebral dysfunction. Microscopic investigation showed a considerable demyelination and the presence of numerous Rosenthal fibers. The results are compared with observations in the literature of Alexander's disease during early infancy.

In the main fraction of oligosaccharides obtained after the acetic acid hydrolysis of the lipopolysaccharides of the strain PM were identified: terminal bound glucose and L-glycero-D-manno-heptose, 1,2-,1,3,4-, and 1,3,4,6,-linked heptose. The oligosaccharide of the strain 1297 S contains terminal linked galactose, 1,4- or 1,6-linked glucose and 1,4-linked N-acetylglucosamine additionally. The molar ratios of these elements show the heterogenicity of the preparations. The determined molecular weights underline the R-character of the LPS. In the by-fractions of the acetic acid hydrolysis the known mannan and another polysaccharide with galactose and glucosamine were identified.

The biological properties, sedimentation behaviour, and electron-optically visualised structures of lipopolysaccharides from Pasteurella multocida were found to be identical with lipopolysaccharides from Enterobacteriaceae. Hard evidence to the effect that lipopolysaccharides from Pasteurella multocida are R-lipopolysaccharides were produced by the composition of monosaccharides together with experiments on the basis of disc electrophoresis.

Saturation curves for a plane-parallel ionisation chamber have been studied in a pulsed electron beam of 5.2 MeV initial energy as a function of chamber voltage, chamber depth and charge density liberated per pulse. It is shown that, if ion losses by diffusion and by initial recombination are appropriately considered, the remaining ion losses by volume recombination can be described by Boag's theory. The constant mu in this theory has been determined to be (2.7 +/- 0.1) x 10(10) V m C-1. This value is consistent with data on charge collection characteristics obtained using the same ionisation chamber exposed to continuous radiation from beta-sources.
The value of the Kiel classification of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) in neuro-oncology is supported by a systematic prospective study of the CNS in 131 autopsies with NHL. In 31 (23.7%) cases the CNS was involved, mainly in lymphoblastomas (11) and immunocytomas (10). Tumour manifestations of the CNS were found in 17 (20%) out of 84 low grade and 13 (34%) high grade malignant NHL. In plasmocytomas of the bone marrow the CNS was rarely affected. As only one fourth of the CNS infiltrations in lymphomas showed naked-eye appearances, a careful histologic examination of the brain, spinal cord, nerve roots and spinal ganglia, respectively, is necessary for evaluation of the CNS involvement in NHL. The cause of the different incidence of CNS manifestation in various types of NHL is obscure. Further investigations including immunologic, clinical and therapeutic studies have to be carried out for solving this problem.
Pasteurella multocida and P. haemolytica strains contain between 1.5 and three per cent phosphorus, between nine and 14 per cent nitrogen, between two and four per cent DNA, and between five and 18 per cent RNA, the precise figures depending on culturing conditions. High-molecular DNA may be isolated by means of bacteriolysis, using deoxycholate or dodecylsulphate and the usual steps of purification, with yield and purity differing by strains. DNA with sufficient purity can be obtained from Sepharose 2 B by gel chromatography. The isolated DNA yields were characterised, base values being between 37 and 38 per cent GC for P. haemolytica and between 41 and 48 per cent GC for P. multocida. Highly suitable precursors to DNA synthesis for tritium labelling are 3H-thymidine, which is incorporated in excess of 3H-thymine by a factor of 255, as well as 3H-uracil, with its activity being recovered also from the pyrimidine bases of DNA via pyrimidine biosynthesis.
A comprehensive post-mortem investigation of the central nervous system (CNS) in 103 patients with malignant non-Hodgkin-lymphomas was performed. Neoplastic foci were revealed in the CNS in 21 cases. Five of them were visible at gross examination. Strong evidence exists that the incidence of the CNS-involvement is correlated with the lymphoma-type. Our cases were classified according to the Kiel-classification (Lennert 1975). The findings suggest that CNS-infiltrations are rather common in lymphoblastomas and immunocytomas whereas they seldom occur in plasmocytomas.
