[Automation of hematologic diagnosis: developmental status of instruments for counting and differentiating blood cells].

There are numerous instruments for routine hematology. Most of them are flow systems and work according to the conductometric principle (Coulter), some according to scatter light or absorption principle. They provide a different number of hematologic parameters automatically or semiautomatically. For research purpose, i.e. cell or particle analysis, are different systems available, operating with scatter light or fluorescence activation; some instruments are able to sort cells in different subpopulations. Other apparatus deliver the complete differential leucocyte count by pattern recognition of conventionally stained smears.

[Reduction of the radiation exposure in photofluorography by using rare earth-based fluorescent screens].

The use of highly sensitive fluorescent screens based on gadolinium in photofluorography results in considerable reduction of radiation exposure compared with conventional screens. The exposure to radiation can be reduced to a value which is hardly higher than that of a large format image. The image quality is enhanced by the incorporation of new screens because of shorter exposure times. Gadolinium foils with high image amplification are already available on a commercial basis. Exchanging them in photofluorograph equipment presents no problem.

[Quality control in x-ray diagnosis by using a universally applicable phantom].

A universally applicable phantom consisting of a test plate and test filter is described; with these it is possible to check the most important criteria concerning the quality of diagnostic radiographic equipment as recommended by the WHO. The universal plate can be used for checking diagnostic apparatus and screening and tomographic installations. The effort and cost of using this is minimal. Test films obtained with the phantom document various measurements; these are immediately available for visual evaluation by the investigator and the operator of the radiographic installation.

[Early complication of the hip joint surface replacement according to Wagner (author's transl)].

Apart from infection and loosening of the implants, spontaneous fracture of the femoral neck is a specific early complication of the hip joint surface replacement according to Wagner. Based on our case material we demonstrate the problems involved, investigating not only the deficient operation technique but also the reasons for its deficiency which, in our opinion, are to be found in the method itself.

[A study of a swimming training programme in the rehabilitation of patients following myocardial infarction (author's transl)].

A special swimming programme was initiated during the course of rehabilitation of patients after myocardial infarction with additional disturbances of the musculoskeletal system. Allowance was made for aspects of individual training requirements. Patients were divided in two groups according initial values of physical working capacity: One group contained patients with less than 80% of the normal work capacity, the other those with borderline normal values. The first group showed an average increase of 35% in the initial values during a one-year period of swimming training once a week. The other group with practically normal initial values showed only a slight or negligible increase. Serum lipid levels were unchanged in both groups. No serious side effects were encountered in more than 3000 patients hours. However, no prediction of the risks of this type of training as compared to other forms of physical exercise in patients recovering from myocardial infarction can be made from this study.

[Familical cleft foot--a clinical study over 4 generations (author's transl)].

Within this paper a family is being described in which foot deformities are shown over four generations. During two generations cleft foot is found as well as a syndaktylism. The cases are demonstrated clinically, by photographs and also by X-ray. The question of inheritance is being discussed in comparison with the existing literature, also taking into account the coexistence of cleft foot and syndaktylism.
