[Gastroscopy in Austria the results of a questionnaire study (author's transl)].

By means of a questionnaire we have gathered information about gastroscopy in Austria. This inquiry has enabled us to compare the techniques used and the results obtained in the diagnosis of gastric cancer. The final aim of the investigation was to obtain guidelines for the wider application of gastroscopy for the early diagnosis of gastric cancer. The level of response by Austrian endoscopists to the inquiry was high at 72.7%. The results demonstrate a considerable increase in the use of gastroscopy in Austria over the past few years. However, some of the provinces hate fallen behind others. The available equipment is not fully used and reasons for this are discussed. A close correlation is shown to exist between the number of gastric biopsies carried out and the incidence of early gastric cancer. It is further shown that the use of cytological brushing improves the results. Only one third of endoscopists, however, use this method.

[Ultrastructure of an atrial myxoma (author's transl)].

Electron microscopic examination of a surgically removed atrial myxoma showed, besides fibrocytes and fibroblasts, mainly isolated smooth muscle cells arranged in solid cellstrands. They are responsible for collagen-and elastin-synthesis. They are presumed to arise from subendocardial smooth muscle cells and considered to be neoplastic.

Retrograde oesophagoscopy via gastrostomy.

The following case-report shows that oesophagoscopy can be performed by introducing a flexible fiberscope through a gastrostomy. Conditions and indications for this unusual procedure are discussed. Applying this method of oesophagoscopy the natural form of the cardia can be observed, and the so-called cardiac lip well known to any endoscopist is shown to be an artefact.

[Surgical treatment in coronary heart disease (author's transl)].

This paper describes the operative techniques appropriate to the treatment of coronary heart disease. The chapters deal with general preliminaries and indications for surgery, the selection of bypass material, surgical instruments for coronary opertaions, the methods of extracorporeal circulation, the distal coronary anastomosis, the proximal aortal anastomosis, intraoperative monitoring of results, intra- and postoperative myocardinal infarction, the fate of venous bypass grafts, operative treatment of the ruptured ventricular septum and papillary muscle, and ventricular aneurysmectomy.

[The use of laser in thoracic-, cardiac- and vascular surgery (author's transl)].

We carried out thoracic and cardiovascular operations with a 50 watt CO2-Laser. The advantage of this procedure: A minimal trauma of tissue in consequence of no use of selfcutting surgical instruments, bloodless incision at smallest area of coagulation and no possibility of displacement of infections and tumor cells. We believe that this new laser in all surgical disciplines introduced soon.

[Differential diagnostic procedures in localized liver diseases].

Liver scintigraphy by means of 99mTc-sulphur colloid (n = 430) and 67Gallium-citrate (n = 180) were carried out on selected patients, on a follow-up study. This study was undertaken to prove the possibility of early diagnosis of primary hepatic carcinomas. Only autoptically verified cases (n = 119) were used for the evaluation of the accuracy of liver scans. 99mTc-s.c. -scans predicted the presence or absence of focal liver diseases in 78% of the cases. Scan data were falsely positive in 10% and falsely negative in 28%.
