On empathy: fundamental issues regarding its nature and teaching.
In nursing empathy is generally regarded as an essential component of nurse-patient interaction, but there appears to be a lack of clarity among nurse educators and professional nurses regarding its nature and how it may be taught and measured. This paper focuses on an analysis of selected theoretical works related to the nature and teaching of empathy, and an attempt is made to identify fundamental issues regarding the phenomenon "empathy" and its place in clinical nursing practice.

Normal homeostasis of fibrinolysis in nephrogenic diabetes insipidus in spite of defective V2- receptor-mediated responses of tissue plasminogen activator release.
Three patients with congenital, nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) from two unrelated families were tested for haemostatic and fibrinolytic responses to DDAVP infusion and venous occlusion. None of the three patients showed a response of factor VIII:C, vWF:Ag or t-PA to DDAVP, a V2-agonist. However, the baseline levels of these factors in the patients' plasma were normal and during venous occlusion a rise in t-PA antigen and t-PA activity was observed in all patients. One patient showed a definite response of the t-PA antigen level to exercise. It is concluded that (extrarenal) V2-receptor-mediated responses are absent in these patients, but that baseline homeostasis and the response to venous occlusion and physical exertion are intact. Presumably, these depend on other mechanisms. This observation denies a central role for vasopressin receptors in the on-demand regulation of clotting and clot dissolving properties of the blood.
The electro-oculogram as an aid in the diagnosis of uveal melanoma.
The electro-oculogram (EOG) in the 64 patients with a melanoma of the choroid or ciliary body was compared to the EOG in 11 patients with choroidal metastasis, 11 patients with choroidal naevi and 27 patients with a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Using the Dt and the Lp/Dt-ratio, 87.5% of the melanomas could be diagnosed correctly whereas choroidal naevus and retinal detachment were diagnosed correctly in 72.7% and 70.4% of the cases respectively. Choroidal metastases never were classified correctly. Accompanying retinal detachment, tumour volume or a break through Bruch's membrane had no influence on the EOG in the melanoma patients. An important advantage of the method is that it can be used irrespective of the condition of the other eye. Combined with ophthalmoscopy, ultrasonography and fluorescein-angiography the EOG can be an additional aid in the differential diagnosis of malignant melanoma of the choroid and ciliary body.

Teaching caring in nursing: a needs assessment.
Despite the fact that caring is the heart of nursing, there is growing evidence that nurses are not as effective as they ought to be in their caring role. This signifies that more attention needs to be given to the teaching of caring. The aim of this study was to pave the way to initiate the process of research on teaching caring, by suggesting priority areas. The needs assessment design was used for the study. Five steps were involved to achieve the aims. The first was to explore the nature and meaning of caring as presented in the literature. The second was to review completed research on aspects of caring within the nursing context. The third was to investigate the position of caring in the present nursing education system. The fourth was to investigate ways of promoting the teaching of caring as advocated in the literature and the final step based on inferences made from the first four steps was to suggest priority areas for research on teaching caring in nursing.
