[Vesical flexion and vaginal prolapse of sows as an obstetrical problem].

The evaluation of 523 clinically supervised parturitions of swine from the last ten years showed that vesical flexion and vaginal prolapse as a complex range together (with 9.4%) on place three of the causes of dystocia. There were 16 cases of vesical flexion (= 3.1% of dystocia) and 33 cases of vaginal prolapse (= 6.3% of dystocia). Both groups showed a lot of mutualities. For example most cases in both groups were shortly before the third parturition. 50% of vesical flexions and 78.8% of vaginal prolapses appeared within one week before parturition concerning the third pregnancy in 25 and 27.3% of the cases. Both kinds of illness often were accompanied by a further dislocation of rectal tissue. This concerned 31.2% of the patients with vesical flexion and 21.2% of those with vaginal prolapse. The patients in 81.2% of vesical flexions and in 72.7% of vaginal prolapses were not taken to the clinic before dislocation of tissue appeared stationary. To make sure the diagnosis "vesical flexion" and to differentiate it from vaginal prolapse several methods are available. The most important one is catheterization of the bladder. This was done in 56.2% of the cases for diagnostical as well as for therapeutical reasons. To avoid relapses the foley-catheter had to be left in the bladder for maximal 19 days and for 6 days on an average. The vaginal prolapse after reposition was treated in 60.6% of the cases by a vaginal fastening. This was done to 75% of these patients according to Bühner.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Urinary incontinence in spayed bitches. 1. Pathogenesis, incidence and disposition].

The exact aetiopathogenesis of urinary incontinence due to urethral sphincter incompetence in spayed bitches is not fully understood. A literature review is given and breed and weight disposition are discussed. A follow-up study showed that the incidence of the breeds Giant Schnauzer, Irish Setter, Boxer, and Old English Shepherd was significantly higher in relation to the population. It could be confirmed that mainly heavy dogs become incontinent (78% had a weight of more than 20 kg). On the other hand, most of the spayed bitches (58%) weighed more than 20 kg. Therefore it could not be verified that there is a correlation between the individual weight and incontinence.

[Urinary incontinence in castrated female dogs. 2. Therapy].

Several methods can be used for the treatment of urinary incontinence due to urethral sphincter incompetence in spayed bitches. The most commonly applied medicaments are either alpha-sympathomimetics or estrogens. Because of their high effectiveness and little side effects alpha-sympathomimetics should be preferred. A clinical field trial showed that ephedrine and phenylpropanolamine are highly efficient (ephedrine 93%, phenylpropanolamine 97%) and had very little side effects. It has proved to be valuable to apply 1.2-1.7 mg/kg/day (ephedrine) respectively 1.5 mg/kg twice a day (phenylpropanolamine) as an initial dosage and to reduce this step by step to the lowest dosage that keeps the dog continent. When urinary incontinence does not respond to conservative treatment several surgical techniques can be performed.

[Development of the iron supply in suckling pigs under variable iron supplementation with regard to environmental conditions].

In this research the effect of different methods of iron supplementation, injection of Fe(III) dextran six or 70 hours post natum, oral Fe(III) dextran treatment or oral application of Fe(II)-Humat, each six hours post natum, was examined for the evaluation of hemoglobin, plasma iron and weight of suckling piglets within the first 24 days of life in different systems of stalling. The oral and parenteral iron dextran application resulted in a remarkable increase of the hemoglobin levels after the third day of life. On day eight the hemoglobin concentrations obtained by early postnatal iron administration were higher than the values after the usual iron injection on the third day of life. The iron incorporation by Fe-Humat was not sufficient for obtaining a rise in hemoglobin values. No significant differences were seen between the oral or parenteral iron dextran treated groups reared on iron containing floor. In the farrowing on plastic grates the piglets supplemented orally with iron dextran showed a decrease of hemoglobin level starting at day 14. At day 24 the values were significantly lower than after iron injection. In all treatment groups there were more anaemic piglets in the group farrowing system than in the separate farrowing system. Weight gain was remarkably worse too. The immediately postnatal treated piglets had significantly higher PI levels on day three than the animals treated at the third day of life. The plasma iron concentration decreased in all treatment groups from day eight, but the decrease was more important in the orally supplemented groups.

Enrichment of bovine X and Y spermatozoa by free-flow electrophoresis.

Conditions of separation of bovine spermatozoa according to their differences in electrophoretic mobility were studied using free-flow electrophoresis. Distribution of spermatozoa in the electric field depends on composition of buffer system, field intensities and temperature. Conditions are described for reproducible separation of anodically migrating spermatozoa into two distinct peaks both for cold-immobilized (10-13 degrees C) and for motile cells (25 degrees C). Electrophoresis with the buffer used at 25 degrees C and field intensities of 70-100 V/cm provided high percentages of motile spermatozoa (50-90%) in all fractions. However, the sperm distribution across the fractions was the result of superimposed passive electrophoretic motion towards the anode and the active galvanotactic migration towards the cathode. Separation of X- and Y-spermatozoa was verified by quantification of Y-spermatozoa by means of both in situ hybridization, using Y-specific DNA fragments, and the Y-specific fluorescence staining (f-body test). Y-spermatozoa could be enriched in anodic fractions (112 and 144% relative to control). X-spermatozoa were enriched in cathodic fractions (80 and 68% Y-spermatozoa, as compared to control).

[The use of exfoliative vaginal cytology for the gynecological evaluation of the bitch].

The relationship between the oestrus cycle of the bitch and the corresponding change in vaginal cytology as a reflection of the endocrine situation is described. The development of the vaginal epithelium is described using 2 staining techniques: a modified Papanicolaou-Shorr and the eosin-Thiazin stains. The use of vaginal smears in mating determination, oestrus suppression and prevention of nidation is discussed and a method of collecting vaginal material is described.

[The "lethal white foal" syndrome].

The lethal white foal syndrome (congenital intestinal aganglionosis) was diagnosed by history, clinical signs and pathological findings in a female foal, born in March 1992, that was an offspring of two overo-spotted paint horses. The syndrome is a congenital innervation defect of the gastrointestinal tract. A literature review of this condition, relatively unknown in Germany, is given.

[Examination of the ovarian activity of mares using progesterone profiles].

By means of clinical and analytical procedures (enzyme immuno assay for progesterone with microtiterplate method) the ovarian activity from 27 mares was tested over a period of several weeks. The measurement of the progesterone level to determine the time of ovulation was proved as suitable in the period of 1-2 days after ovulation. In normocyclic mares (n = 17) a different development of the progesterone profile was detected, so that an insufficient development of the corpus luteum (35%) could be considered. By means of continuous measurement of progesterone (> or = 30 days) six of ten mares with aberrations in estrous cycle were considered carrying a persistent corpus luteum. Four of them showed a complete inactivity of the ovaries. The clinical importance of the determination of progesterone levels as a mean of routine diagnostic in mares with gynaecological problems is discussed.

[The development of plasma iron concentration and hemoglobin content in piglets in the first three days of life and the significance of prenatal anemia].

In a short-term investigation the postnatal values and the development of the concentrations of transferrin-bound PI and haemoglobin and of the weight gain of piglets was determined in the first three days of life without iron treatment (n = 17) and following different methods of early postnatal iron application (n = 65). The Hb and Pl values at birth were widely scattered. About 40% of the piglets showed a latent or overt iron deficiency. The Hb level at birth was positively correlated with weight gain. In the group not supplemented with iron, the Hb concentration declined by 27% and the Pl level by 61% of the value at birth. After the early postnatal iron administration the transferrin-bound Pl rose proportional to the extent of iron resorption from the different preparations. The decrease of the Hb concentration could not be influenced by early iron administration, but the iron treated piglets tended to show higher values than the untreated group on day 3. A study of the incidence of diarrhoea in the whole group (n = 82) showed less enteritis signs in early iron supplemented piglets.

[The blood gas status in bitches with pyometra-endometritis complex].

The blood gas status of 52 bitches presented with pyometra-endometritis complex was examined. Nine healthy bitches with a normal sexual cycle served as control group. Depending on the clinical symptoms, the sick bitches were divided into two groups (A and B). Compared to the control group, both test groups showed significant differences in pH, HCO3 and base excess levels. A correlation between the severity of disease and the decreasing pH level was noted. The disturbance of acid-base balance also resulted in respiratory and metabolic acidosis. A high proportion of these acidotic states was not compensated (group A: 71.4%; group B: 50.0%).

Morphological and hormonal changes after superovulation in cows treated with Neutra-PMSG.

Morphological changes in ovaries and hormonal changes as well as changes in Na, K, Ca, Mg, and P blood plasma levels were observed after superovulation induced by the administration of PMSG and the neutralization of this hormone with monoclonal antibodies Neutra-PMSG administered either 72 or 108 h later. The introduction of Neutra-PMSG 108 h after PMSG injection clearly decreases the number of surviving non-ovulated follicles with a diameter > 10 mm (1.7 +/- 0.8 vesicle in an individual cow on the average) in comparison to the group without Neutra-PMSG (19.4 +/- 9.5). The efficiency of ovulation in the group treated with Neutra-PMSG in the 108th h of the experiment (8.2 +/- 4.6 corpora lutea per cow on the average), did not differ statistically from the group treated with PMSG only (12.4 +/- 10.6). Early administration of Neutra-PMSG (72h), totally inhibits superovulation. Observations showed, that injection of Neutra-PMSG in the 108th h, caused a considerable decrease in the estradiol level, beginning with the 120th h of the experiment. Determination of the progesterone blood plasma level reflects the number of corpora lutea and can be helpful in evaluating the effects of superovulation. Superovulation did not effect the level of Na, K, Ca, Mg, and P in the blood plasma.

[The development of the IgG concentration in the blood serum of newborn foals].

The aim of this study was to determine the course of the IgG concentration in blood serum of neonatal foals. A comparison of blood serum IgG concentration of the mares showed IgG values of 3356 +/- 671 mg/dl up to a maximum of 3579 +/- 766 mg/dl (means +/- s). In accordance with Eisenhauer (1981) and in contrast to Jeffcott (1974) no significant change of the IgG level in the blood serum of the mares could be observed during the test period. However, the IgG concentration in the colostrum of meanG = 11776 mg/dl during birth decreased considerably 96 hours later with meanG = 135 mg/dl. At birth in all samples, small amounts of IgG could be detected. The IgG level of the foals' blood increased rapidly after the ingestion of colostrum; 6 of 16 foals showed more than 800 mg/dl six hours post natum, reaching maximum levels 18 hours after birth with meanG = 1343 mg/dl. At 96 hours post natum, the IgG concentration dropped to meanG = 1170 mg/dl. The correlation of IgG concentration in colostrum and serum was significant.

[Concentration of species alien (bovine) IgG in the blood serum of foals after the intake of non-species specific colostrum preparation].

Sixteen vital foals with free access to maternal colostrum received a additional non-species-specific commercial colostrum additive within the first 18 hours of their life. The additive had been prepared from bovine colostrum. At birth no bovine IgG was detectable. The concentration of bovine IgG reached its maximum 18 hours post natum with XG = 74.6 mg/dl. 96 hours after birth IgG levels had dropped to XG = 20.9 mg/dl. The correlation of bovine IgG with GGT-activity was highly significant. Formation of antibodies against bovine IgG could not be demonstrated. It is not possible to increase igG in the circulation of newborn foals to satisfactory levels with IgG of bovine origin in the used commercial colostrum additive.

[Examples of the use of ultrasonography in gynecology, obstetrics, neonatology and andrology].

Ultrasonography is of increasing importance as a diagnostical instrument for gynaecological examination in nearly all domestic animals. It also has applications in obstetrics and neonatology, particularly in certain cases. Ultrasonography has facilitated more clinical information and increased the precision of some diagnoses. Nevertheless, ultrasonography does not replace the classical, non-apparatus methods of investigation. These methods remain the basic means of examination in gynaecology, obstetrics, neonatology and andrology.

[Analysis of the obstetrical situation in swine from the clinical point of view].

In a study including 477 parturitions in sows the obstetrical situation of this species is analyzed from the clinical point of view. Obstetrical interventions before consulting the veterinary clinics led to partly severe lesions of soft tissues of the genital tract in 35.5% of all primiparous and in 12.6% of all pluriparous sows. So 3.1% of all obstetrical patients had to be slaughtered due to the enormous perforating lesions in vestibular-vaginal-cervical parts of the genital tract. In 71 cases parturition could not be completed because of stress, insufficiency of the cardiovascular system or economic reasons. In general, 76% of parturitions came to an end conservatively and 24% by caesarean section. In older sows the relation was 88% vs. 13%. During the recent years the loosing-rate by completed parturition could be reduced to 3.4% after conservative obstetrical intervention and to 20.6% after caesarean section in preinjured sows by compensation of the respiratory and metabolic acidosis, stabilizing of the cardiovascular system and the supply of warmth. Possibilities to diminish total losses are discusses, concerning the large number of animals with injuries due to inappropriate conservative obstetrics as well as the intensification of intra- and postoperative supportive therapy.

[Double ovulation in mares. Clinical, hormone analytical and sonographic studies].

108 mares with a total of 135 oestrous cycles were examined. 30% of the mares showed development of double follicles, found by palpation and ultrasonography. Eight cases of double ovulation, four of them synchronous and four asynchronous, were examined closely. These cases of double ovulation showed different growth and different development of the follicular wall. This occurred at the same time in cases of synchronous double ovulation whereas it differed in case of asynchronous double ovulation. The later ovulating follicle was still growing while the first one had already burst. With both forms of double ovulation an equal concentration of progesterone was detected in peripheral blood. On the day of ovulation the rate of progesterone was low (1 ng/ml blood plasma) and it first started rising from the day +1 on. Double follicles matured slower than single follicles. Mares with synchronous double ovulation showed the typical oestrus behavior. This behavior was less distinct after the first ovulation in mares with asynchronous double ovulation. All four mares with asynchronous and two mares with synchronous double ovulation became pregnant. Twins did not occur. A possible relationship between double ovulation and twin pregnancy is discussed.
