Small-angle X-rays scattering experiments were performed with oxidized and reduced cytochrome oxidase purified from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The radii of gyration were calculated to be 40.5 A for the oxidized form and 37.0 A for the reduced. The longest dimension of the oxidized enzyme was 120 A while for the reduced it was 100 A. The volume of the oxidized protein was observed to be slightly greater than that of the reduced. These data indicate that there is a contraction of the structure of the enzyme during reduction of its constituent heme groups.
A hypercalcaemic crisis was the first manifestation of acute lymphatic leukaemia in a two-year-old girl. Admiinistration of prednisolone improved the child's general condition but obscured the true diagnosis which was made only when another hypercalcaemic crisis occurred. Unexplained hypercalcaemia should make one consider the possibility of a malignant blood dyscrasia. Forced diuresis, cortisone and mithramycin can be used therapeutically to achieve a rapid fall in calcium level.
The effect of long-term ultraviolet irradiation on the connective tissue of the skin was investigated in 25 naked (Ng/-) mice which received a total daily radiant dose of 40 +/- 2 J/cm2 for a period of 8.5 months. The produced alterations were very similar to those found in actinic elastosis of humans, as assessed by histologic and electron-microscopic criteria.

Variation in electrocardiographic R-R intervals during rest was investigated as a measure of autonomic function and as a diagnostic tool in diabetes. Diabetics (106) of both sexes with different duration of the disease were compared with 116 metabolically healthy control subjects of the same age range. Diabetic retinopathy was diagnosed using fundus photography, and classified in stages O-II. Coefficient of variation (CV) of R-R intervals in controls is age-dependent. The negative correlation between CV and age in diabetics applied only when retinopathy was absent; in diabetics with late complications, CV was significantly lower (p less than 0.0001) than in the healthy or in uncomplicated diabetic state. The CV decreased with increasing severity of retinopathy permitting routine differentiation of progressive stages of retinopathy and peripheral neuropathy.

In 60 patients with a kidney transplant 86 perfusion studies with 99mTc-DTPA were performed during the early postoperative period. Correlative data and clinical differentiation were obtained by isotope nephrograms, laboratory values and clinical presentation. In addition to evaluation of scintiphotos, time-activity curves were derived from the transplant and evaluated quantitatively, obtaining a perfusion ratio by a computer program. A ratio of greater than 0.80 was found to be normal. In 20 patients with acute rejection, the ratio was decreased. In 13 patients with acute tubular necrosis, the perfusion ratio was between 0.39 and 0.65, decreasing further during an added rejection crisis. Follow-up examinations confirmed rejection through a decrease of the perfusion ratio (mean difference 0.44; p less than 0.025). In 9 cases, successful rejection therapy was documented by an increase (mean difference 0.29; p less than 0.005). In addition to quantitative evaluation, visual analysis revealed acute occlusion of the renal artery, renal infarction, urinoma, ureteral stenosis or necrosis. Quantitative scintigraphy with 99mTc-DTPA broadened the methods of describing kidney transplant function. Its quantitative evaluation enables the definition of acute rejection and its differentiation from acute tubular necrosis combined with acute rejection in the early postoperative period. Since the method recognizes morphological alterations as well, it usefully complements isotope nephrography.

We describe a 12 year old patient who developed acute renal failure at the age of 18 months due to radiolucent "uric acid" stones. Measurement of APRT activity showed a complete dificiency in this patient (less than 0.02%). In the urine we found instead of uric acid 2.8-dihyroxyadenine as measured by high pressure liquid chromatography. The pedigree indicates an autosomal-recessive inheritance of this disorder.
German measles is an infections exanthematous disease, long regarded as completely harmless. The clinical symptoms are banal and often go unnoticed. In complete contrast is the severe malformation of the embryo after infection early on in pregnancy, first discovered by Gregg in 1941. The virus infects the embryo via the placenta and either causes death or impairs the differentiation of embryonic tissues, causing malformation. What is understood today under the congenital German measles syndrome is considerably more extensive and includes, in addition to malformation, growth retardation, premature birth as well as possible disease of organs or organ systems continuing well after the postnatal period. We were recently able to study a case of congenital encephalitis caused by the German measles virus and here too able to demonstrate histopathologically the persistence of the infection.

Three cases of glomus tympanicum are presented. The audiological findings are discussed with special emphasis on the results of impedance audiometry. The use of impedance audiometry in the diagnosis and follow-up of glomus tympanicum tumors is suggested.
