The anterior pituitary of the Atlantic hagfish, Myxine glutinosa, was investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The cells of the adenohypophysis are arranged in follicles surrounded by connective tissue. Five cell types containing granules and one agranular cell type were identified. At the present state of the study the function of these cells remains open to discussion.
The effect of BCG-induced orchitis on the structure of the seminiferous tubules in rats and rabbits was investigated by light and electron microscopy. The formation of cavities between Sertoli cells and the displacement of the cells of the spermatogenic cycle are the earliest changes to be observed. Individual Sertoli cells and the displacement of the cells of the spermatogenic cycle are the earliest changes to be observed. Individual Sertoli cells degenerate and separate from spermatocytes and spermatids. The latter form multinuclear complexes by a broadening of the intercellular bridges. The nuclei of spermatids undergo ring-like chromatin condensation in the rat and swelling in the rabbit. After the loss of spermatocytes and spermatids from the germinal epithelium, the remaining Sertoli cells have a very irregular shape and contain many residual bodies, which are probably derived from previously phagocytosed spermatids. They often contain crystalline inclusions. The nuclei of Sertoli cells show small chromatin condensations. In the rabbit, the tubular wall increases considerably in diameter. In the vicinity of a granuloma in the interstitium caused by BCG inflammatory cells accumulate around the wall of the seminiferous tubules. Although the basal lamina seems to be an obstacle, penetration of macrophages into the tubular lumen could be observed. However, this occurred only after the degeneration of the germinal epithelium.
Number of admissions, days of care and the average length of stay are presented by age, sex and other criteria for Swiss short stay hospital. Persons 60 and over consumed more than 50 percent of all days of care. On the average, females of all age groups, except from 5 to 54 years of age, were hospitalized longer than males. Principal factors influencing the length of stay are: age, diagnosis and mode of discharge. The increase in the number of persons 65 and over admitted to medical departments corresponds to the demographic development, while it exceeds the demographic increase for surgical departments.
Fifty Greek children who had been neglected or physically abused by one or both parents were studied, along with their families. Of these 18 were single-child families. The other 32 children in the study, including two sets of twins, had a total of 53 siblings. In comparison with their siblings, the abused children were more frequently the result of an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy. They had a higher incidence of perinatal problems and more illnesses in the first year of life. Almost half had feeding problems, their nutritional status was often poorer than that of their siblings, and they were characterized by their parents as being more difficult than the other children. In some cases there was evidence of a lesser degree of neglect or abuse in the siblings. More than twice as many boys as girls were abused, although there were more girls than boys amongst the siblings. This possibly reflects the higher value and as a result higher expectations that Greek culture places on male children.
Fifty-four abused and neglected children have been referred to our multidisciplinary team for assessment and treatment. There were many more boys than girls (36 vs 18) and the mean age was 3.3 years. Half of the children were admitted for medical reasons and abuse or neglect were secondary findings. The medical findings included bruises and fractures, head injuries, knife wounds, and failure to thrive. The children's main characteristics were: "difficult children," unwanted pregnancies, difficult pregnancies and deliveries and half of them were separated from their mothers during the first months of life due to illness. The families were characteristic of multiproblem families of low social level. Almost all parents were young when married and half were unemployed or had unsteady employment. In most cases the parents were socially isolated and had poor relations with their families of origin. Most mothers and half of the fathers had an unhappy childhood while almost half of the mothers had a psychiatric problem. In general, our findings were in accordance with those described in other nations. Nevertheless, there were some characteristics which seem to be of relevance within the Greek ethnic and cultural context. The legal problems as well as those pertaining to child protection are discussed.

The cloaca of Myxine glutinosa was examined by histochemical and scanning electron microscopical methods. No copulation organ could be found in Myxine and no detectable differences in the anatomy of the cloaca between male and female Myxine glutinosa. The anal gland which is the only gland in the cloacal region is situated between rectum and ductus coelomaticus. Like the lateral mucous glands in the epidermis it consists of large mucous gland cells, thread cells and undifferentiated cells. The cloacal epithelium neither develops a spatial separation by folds nor a ciliation is present in the caudal and dorsal part of the cloacal chamber. Therefore female and male myxinoides do not show any structures which would allow transportation of sperm into the abdominal cavity or out of it.

Serum concentrations of tamoxifen and its metabolite, N-desmethyltamoxifen (DMT) were determined in six post-menopausal patients with advanced breast cancer. Following a single 10-mg dose PO parent drug was detected in the serum, with a peak concentration of 17.5 ng/ml. Concentrations of the N-desmethyl metabolite were below the limit of detection (less than 2.5 ng/ml). After 21 days' oral therapy with 10 mg b.i.d. the serum concentration of tamoxifen had increased ten fold, while DMT was now present in comparable amounts. Two patients were further studied for a longer time period. There was little change in the serum concentration of tamoxifen, while the DMT increased two fold above its value at 21 days.

As to its allergising capability Chloramphenicol holds a leading position. That's why the evidence of an existing sensibilisation is important. But there is a controversy concerning the usual lymphocyte transformation test (LTT). With the help of comparing tests (patch-test - LTT) a high rate of equal results between both the methods is shown. Thus, the efficiency of LTT basing on morphological analysing criteria, which is used for the evidence of an existing Chloramphenicol-sensibilisation seems to be proved.
