[Combination of the syndrome of Sturge-Weber and the syndrome of Klippel-Trénaunay (author's transl)].

Up until now 39 cases of combined Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome and Sturge-Weber syndrome have been described. Here follows the report of a girl, now 4 years of age, displaying a full combination of these syndromes. Only a small part of the body surface is not covered with naevi teleangiectatici laterales. The patient has clear hypertrophy of the left cheek and of the left lower extremity, less noticeable on the left upper extremity. For therapeutic reasons the left side of the head and the left lower extremity were thoroughly angiographically examined--this revealed typical abnormalities. The vessel-alteration of the lower extremity are not extremely far developed and arteriovenous fistulas on a large scale are also absent. This allows us to dismiss the F.P. Weber syndrome on the one hand, while it explains the absence of complications of the Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome, as described in literature, on the other. The significance of the alterations of lymph nodes in this disease, which we are the first to describe, is at present not fully clear. The cerebral attacks have until now showed only a temporary response to medication.

Immunohistological identification of neurophysin and neurophysin-like substances in different vertebrates.

Using rabbit antisera to porcine neurophysin, the immunohistological unlabelled-antibody-peroxidase technique was applied to brains of man, rat, quail, pigeon, tortoise, frog, two cyprinid fishes, sturgeon and lamprey as well as to the urophysis of carp and the brain of the cockroach. In each of the investigated vertebrate speices the magnocellular neurosecretory system is immunoreactive, known to give a specific reaction for neurosecretory material by means of appropriate histological and histochemical methods, too. Moreover, in the rat brain we found immunoreactive material in neurons of the suprachiasmatic nucleus, in the parvocellular part of the paraventricular nucleus, in fibres of the external region of the median eminence and in neurosecretory exohypothalamic fibres. The subcommissural organ and Reissner's fibre as well as the urophysis of the fish spinal cord and neurosecretory cells of the insect brain are devoid of neurophysin or neurophysin-like substances.

[Rat jejunal xylose and galactose absorption dependent on the intestinal bacterial flora and after cytostatics administration].

The influence of the bacterial flora of the intestine and of cytostatic drugs on the intestinal xylose and glucose absorption in the rat is studied by a perfusion technique in vivo. Conventional, germfree and decontaminated animals show no different xylose absorption rates while the galactose absorption is decreased in germfree and decontaminated animals compared to conventional rats. Three days after a single injection of cytostatic drugs the xylose absorption is diminished in conventional and decontaminated animals compared to untreated rats. In germfree rats no effect of cytostatics on the xylose absorption can be proved. The galactose absorption is unchanged after cytostatics in conventional and decontaminated animals, but increased in germfree rats.

[Investigations for using cell- and organ culture in sensibility tests for cytostatics in human ovarial-carcinomas (author's transl)].

Comparison was proved from meaning of cell culture and organ culture in therapeutic sensibility tests for cytostatics in ten human ovarial-carcinomas. The sensibility for cytostatics was determined with morphological criteria in cell culture and with the activity-patterns of some enzymes (lactate-dehydrogenase, NADH-diahorase) in organ culture. In these investigations the tumors have shown approximate conformity in the state to cytostatic-sensibility as seen with the two different methods. It seems to be possible, according to these investigations, to use enzyme-histochemical parameters from organ culture for inquiry of cytostatic-sensibility of tumors.

Influence of ethionine on the ultrastructural morphology of the porcine hepatocyte.

In the present study the morphological alterations induced by ethionine poisoning in the porcine liver were examined by electron microscopy. It was found that the most prominent ultrastructural changes were: accumulation of fat drops in the cytoplasm, disappearance of polysomes, fragmentation and vesiculisation of the endoplasmic reticulum, altered glycogen distribution and mitochondrial swelling. These closely resembled the pathological changes found in rat parenchymal cells under the same circumstances. In addition, moreover fat deposits were found in the nucleoplasm. The microbodies showed an altered morphology.

[Mitomycin and a new phenoxazone pigment from Streptomyces michiganensis. Metabolic products of microorganisms (author's transl)].

Streptomyces michiganensis strain Tü 1074, was isolated from a Tunesian soil sample and produces in liquid medium an antibiotic active pigment complex. Besides mitomycin A the separation of this complex yielded a nonactive phenoxazone, which hitherto has not been described in the literature. In contrary to all known phenoxazones from micro-organisms the new compound lacks a 2-amino-function. The production of this phenoxazone could be enhanced by optimizing the condtions of fermentation.

Intraocular surgery with general anesthesia.

A specialized technique developed specifically for ophthalmic surgery has led surgeons at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital to perform most private cataract extractions-more than 1,000 per year-with patients under general anesthsia. Because this practice is followed by so few ophthalmic surgeons elsewhere, an evaluation of the relative safety and benefits of local vs. general anesthesia was undertaken. A retrospective study comparing 2,217 consecutive patients operated on under general anesthesia with 561 patients operated on under local analgesia leads us to believe that general anesthesia providess the surgeon with optimum operating conditions. General anaessthesia has proved to be a safe procedure, with a minimum of complications. The ophthalmic surgeon is assured of absolute patient immobility, with safety equilvalent to that seen with procedures performed with local analgesia, despite the advanced age and resulting physiological degeneration of the patient population.

[The value and limitation of echotomography in the diagnosis of abdominal lymphomas in malignant diseases(author's transl)].

The indication for ultrasonic examination in addition to endolymphatic methods is discussed. In 23 histologically proved advanced cases the accuracy of lymphography was 77% and in echotomography 74%. In the diagnosis of lymphonodal enlargements in the area of the liver and spleen hilium echotomography proved to be a valuable diagnostic method independent from endolymphatic methods. In X-ray treatments echotomography enables us to estimate the therapeutic result and to evaluate the lymphonodal status. The controls are performed in an out-patient manner.

[Use of an ultramicroelectrophoretic method for separating blood serum cellular and isoenzymes].

Methods for staining of ultramicroenzymelectrophoregrams are described. Sharp and well reproducible bands of isozymes of LDH, MDH, G-6-PD, AcP, AlP, alpha-NAE were obtained from homogenates of cultivated human fibroblasts, of rat's liver, kidney and brain, of human embryonic liver, and in blood serum of man and frog. An extract from the rat brain containing only 3.4 ng of proteins or a quantity of 70-80 fibroblasts were sufficient for obtaining a well differentiated spectrum of LDH isozymes. The ultramicromethod significantly lowers the need in deficit reagents, reduces the cost and time of analysis.

[Electronic film analysis of nuclei of the fetal knee joint in amniotic shadows (author's transl)].

Fetal shadows between LM IX and LM X were analysed with electronic film-improvement (harmonization). Altogether 108 nuclei of the knee joint were investigated. This techniques permits better and quicker analysis of pictures uhich at times are difficult to assess owing to overlapping. Addition radiographic exposures of mother and fetus can thus be avoided. Electronic improvement of films provides an important contribution to the reduction of exposure.

Enzymatic synthesis of mannosyl retinyl phosphate from retinyl phosphate and guanosine diphosphate mannose.

A study was conducted to determine whether retinyl phosphate would act as substrate for the enzymatic synthesis of mannosyl retinyl phosphate. Retinyl phosphate, prepared chemically, supported the growth of vitamin A-deficient rats at the same rate as retinol. It also stimulated the uptake of [14C]mannose from GDP-[14C]mannose into total chloroform-methanol extractable lipid. This reaction occurred in the presence of ATP, Mn2+, detergent (Zonyl A), and a membrane-rich enzyme preparation from the livers of vitamin A-deficient rats, provided that a lipid extract of the membrane preparation of alpha-L-lecithin was also added. Total chloroform-methanol-extractable, labeled mannolipid was separated into two principal labeled mannolipids by thin-layer or column chromatography or by differential solvent extraction. The properties of these mannolipids identified them as glycophospholipids: one was identical with authentic synthetic dolichyl mannosyl phosphate, and the other was concluded to be mannosyl retinyl phosphate because of its incorporation of radioactivity from [3H]retinyl phosphate, its rapid hydrolysis by dilute acid, and the formation of substance that cochromatographed with retinol upon its acid hydrolysis. The presence of ATP or GTP was essential for the stimulation of mannolipid synthesis, probably because of their protective action on the substrates against phosphatases present in the crude enzyme fraction. A pH of 6.0-6.2 favored the formation of dolichyl mannosyl phosphate; a higher pH (6.7-7.0) that of mannosyl retinyl phosphate.
