New theory on the mechanism of erection involving hitherto undescribed vessels.

47 cadaver penises were investigated by means of plastic, corrosion casts, direct dissection under a stereomicroscope, tissue clearing, and light microscopy. "Shunt" arteries connecting the deep arteries in the corpora cavernosa with vessels in the corpus spongiosum were found. When the penis is flaccid these arteries probably allow blood to pass through the corpora cavernosa directly into the veins of the corpus spongiosum. Constriction of the shunt arteries may divert blood through the helicine arteries into the spaces of the corpora cavernosa, thus producing tumescence and erection. 20 of the cadaver penises had no direct vascular connection between the corpora cavernosa and the corpus spongiosum or glans. This supports the hypothesis that such fistulae, which have been reported in impotent patients are pathological structures.

[Synthesis of phenol-antigen conjugates by reacting N-hydroxysuccinimidic esters of hydroxybenzoic acids with human serum albumin and bovine gamma globulin].

Salicylic acid, beta-resorcylic acid and gentisic acid were acetylated and then reacted with N-hydroxysuccinimide according to the DDC procedure to give the corresponding activated esters. The reaction of these N-hydroxysuccinimidic esters with human serum albumin and bovine gamma globulin yielded modified proteins containing hydroxybenzoyl residues linked to amino groups, the mode of linkage being of the acid amide type.

Synthesis of transfer RNA in rat liver after acute and chronic aflatoxin B1 administration.

Synthesis of rat liver tRNA following acute and chronic administration of aflatoxin B1 was compared to protein synthesis. Twenty hours after acute administration of aflatoxin B1 total RNA synthesis was inhibited by 91% and tRNA synthesis by 77% while protein synthesis as assayed in vitro was inhibited by 75%. In the chronic (long-term) experiment at 7, 18 and 30 weeks after administration of aflatoxin B1 no inhibition of total RNA and tRNA synthesis was observed but protein synthesis in the cell-free system was inhibited by 16%. Thus, the inhibitory effects on protein synthesis observed in the long-term experiments are not correlated with the inhibition of tRNA synthesis.

[Photographic evaluation of the electrophoretic mobility test. A modification].

By insertion of a paraboloid condenser and junction of a usual camera body the cytopherometer was modified to enable an objective evaluation and photographic documentation of the electrophoretic mobility test. The investigation of 25 patients suffering from gynecological cancer and of a control group of the same number using this modified cytopherometer demonstrated a similar rate of false results as achieved by usual timing (28% false, positive or negative, 12% valued ambiguous). In comparison with the timing by a stopwatch the standard deviations of individual photographic measurements were significantly higher (p less than 0,001), whereas no significant difference between the mean mobility indices of the two groups could be calculated (mean mobility index of 25 cancer patients: -7.2 +/- 11.7; mean mobility index of 25 control patients: -3.4 +/- 10.6). In addition the optical modification of the cytopherometer enables a particular analysis of cell movements and their disorders which are reported in detail. According to these observations the qualification of the cytopherometer for immunodiagnosis of cancer is valued doubtful.

Vaginal physiology during menstruation.

We studied 18 young healthy women on the second, fourth, and 14th day of their menstrual cycle. Vaginal fluid was collected for measurement of oxygen and carbon dioxide tension (PO2 and PCO2) and specimens were collected for bacteriologic examination. The vaginal pH was measured at four different sites and the redox potential was measured in the top of the vagina. Staphylococcus aureus was found in three women. The PO2 ranged from 0 to 77 mm Hg on day 2; 0 to 76 mm Hg on day 4; and 0 to 53 mm Hg on day 14. The mean PCO2 (+/- SE) was 46 +/- 2 mm Hg on day 2; 62 +/- 4.5 mm Hg on day 4; and 50.6 +/- 8.5 mm Hg on day 14. The mean vaginal pH (+/- SE) was significantly higher on day 2 (6.6 +/- 0.3) compared with day 4 (5.3 +/- 0.3) and day 14 (4.2 +/- 0.2). The redox potential was significantly higher on day 14 compared with day 2 and day 4. No differences were found in values of women who took birth control pills and those of the women who did not.

[Synthetic inhibitors of serine proteinases. Part 26: Inhibition of trypsin, plasmin and thrombin by amides of N alpha-arylsulfonylated 2-amino-4-(4-amidino-phenyl) butyric acid and 2-amino-5-amidinophenyl valeric acids (author's transl)].

Among the derivatives of the N alpha-arylsulfonylated omega-amidinophenyl-alpha-aminoalkyl carboxylic acids, the primary amides of N alpha-arylsulfonylated 2-amino-4-(4-amidinophenyl) butyric acid proved to be compounds with strong antiplasmin and antitrypsin activity, they exert, however, only slight inhibitory effect on thrombin. So far, no benzamidine derivatives with strong inhibitory effects on plasmin but with weak antithrombin activity have been known. The secondary amides of the N alpha-arylsulfonylated 2-amino-4-(4-amidinophenyl)butyric acid possess slight inhibitory effects, the corresponding derivatives of 2-amino-5-amidinophenyl valeric acids, however, are potent inhibitors of thrombin.
