[The influence of mode of delivery on retroplacental and peripheral serum concentrations of HPL and SP-1 (author's transl)].

The concentrations of HPL and SP-1 were measured in retroplacental and peripheral serum in patients who had an elective Caesarean section and in patients who had a spontaneous vaginal delivery. The peripheral concentration of HPL was significantly lower after vaginal delivery than after elective Caesarean sections (p < 0.001). The retroplacental concentration of serum-SP-1 after vaginal delivery was significantly higher than after elective Caesarean section (p < 0.001). After elective Caesarean section the retroplacental concentration of SP-1 was significantly lower than the peripheral concentration (p < 0.001), but after vaginal delivery the mean retroplacental and peripheral serum-SP-1 values were about equal.

[The absorption of conjugated oestrogens from the irradiated and non-irradiated vagina (author's transl)].

Eighteen women received for four weeks daily applications of conjugated estrogens in ointment. Seven had had primary irradiation of carcinoma of the cervix and eleven were in the menopausal stage without irradiation. Before the first medication and 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 hours afterwards the estradiol, FSH and LH levels were estimated and the mean values of the two collectives compared. Cytologic smears of the vaginal wall were taken weekly of three irradiated and seven not irradiated patients. From the results one can draw the conclusion that an absorption of the estrogens through the vaginal wall takes place leading to local as well as systemic effects of the estrogens. However in the radiated patients the absorption of estrogen and maturation of the epithelium was significantly slower than in the not-irradiated group.

[Pregnancy-specific beta-1-glycoprotein (SP-1) during the second half of pregnancy].

In this paper are defined new data about distribution, controlling factors, metabolism and aspects of physiological function of pregnancy-specific beta 1-glycoprotein during the second half of pregnancy. In high-risk pregnancies with diabetes, Rh-incompatibility and intrauterine death SP-1 concentrations in amniotic fluid were significantly increased. By evaluation of maternal serum concentrations of SP-1 in cases of high-risk pregnancies with EPH-gestosis and fetal retardation relevant results could be demonstrated.

IgG levels in maternal and umbilical cord serum after vaginal delivery and after elective Caesarean section.

Concentrations of IgG is maternal serum and in umbilical cord blood were determined in two groups of patients: one group had spontaneous vaginal deliveries and the other elective Caesarean sections. Mean umbilical cord serum IgG after vaginal delivery was significantly higher than the mean value after elective Caesarean section. The difference between the maternal serum IgG livel and the umbilical cord serum IgG level increased as did the duration of labour.

Cell-mediated immunity in patients with cervical cancer.

In 16 patients with cervical carcinoma (stages II and III) tumor-specific and general immune reactivity was investigated. Cancer patients' skin reactivity was different from that of controls insofar as there was a decreased response to streptokinase-streptodornase as well as to DNCB. Absence of DNCB sensitization was mainly in stage III patients. Cell-mediated immunity to autologous and/or allogeneic tumor-associated antigens (TAA) was demonstrated in vivo and in vitro. 3 of 8 patients had positive skin reactions to autologous TAA and 8 of 14 reacted to allogeneic TAA. In the lymphocyte migration inhibition test, 8 of 14 patients reacted to autologous tumor membrane preparations and 3 of 10 to allogeneic pooled preparations. In addition, there was some indication of cross-reaction with antigens from a human squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. There was no reaction in vitro to normal cervical tissue and no association between tumor-specific reactions and herpes simplex virus type II antibodies could be demonstrated. Patients with DNCB sensitization and in vivo as well as in vitro lymphocyte reactivity to TAA had a better prognosis than nonreacting patients, indicating the value of combined immunological tests.

[The behaviour of serum-coeruplasmin in women with intrauterine pessary containing copper (author's transl)].

In 50 women before and 10--35 weeks after insertion of a Copper-T-200 serum concentration of Caeruloplasmin was assayed. A decrease of serum concentration with statistical significance (p less than 0,0001) was determined. In 22 women before and 4--5 weeks after removal of a Copper-T-200 serum concentration of Caeruloplasmin was assayed. An increase of serum concentration with statistical significance (p less than 0.01) was determined.

[Acute-phase proteins in women with a copper IUD (author's transl)].

Acute-phase (AP) proteins haptoglobin, alpha1-antitrypsin and C-reactive protein were measured in 50 women before and 10 to 30 weeks after insertion of a copper T-200. No statistically significant increase in AP proteins was found. Since these proteins are synthesized in the liver, the results indicate the lack of a systemic humoral reaction of the organism in women with a copper-containing IUD.

Investigations on general immune reactivity in untreated cervical cancer patients.

74 patients with untreated cervical cancer (FIGO II and III) were skintested with a battery of recall antigens, and also sensitised and challenged with DNCB. A significant reduction of reaction to Tuberkulin, Varidase and also to DNCB was found in patients with stage III in comparison to healthy females of the same age group. Significant changes in immunoglobulin levels, increase of IgA and decrease of IgG were observed in the cancer patients. Serum lysozyme values were the same as in the control group.

Premalignant and malignant uterine changes in immunosuppressed renal transplant recipients.

29 female immunosuppressed renal transplant recipients were examined gynecologically. In 2 cases the epithelium of the portio was found to be dysplastic, while endometrial carcinoma was present in 1 patient. A review of the literature suggests that immunosuppressed patients are more likely to develop tumors than others. The authors stress the need for gynecological and cytological examinations at short intervals, to identify premalignant and early malignant uterine changes at a time at which these can readily be treated without discontinuation of the immunosuppressive therapy.

[Haptoglobins in gynecologic tumors (author's transl)].

Serum concentrations of haptoglobins were checked in 100 women with benign or malign gynecologic tumors. Typification of haptoglobins was determined by starch gel electrophoresis, quantification by single radial immunodiffusion. Cases with malignancies showed significant increased levels in comparison to healthy women. In cases with cervical carcinoma, a significant increase of the haptoglobin level was evaluated according to advanced carcinoma.

Immunosuppression by human placenta lactogen (HPL) and the pregnancy-specific beta 1-glycoprotein (SP-1). Inhibition of mitogen-induced lymphocyte transformation.

The in vitro effect of human placental lactogen (HPL) and the gravidity-specific beta1-Glycoprotein (SP-1) on the lymphocyte transformation was investigated in 20 healthy women. It was shown that simultaneous incubation of the lymphocytes with HPL or SP-1 together with PHA has no influence on the incorporation rate of H3-Thymidine. When the fetal calf serum (FCS) in the lymphocyte cultures was substituted by a 3% human albumin-solution, there was a reduction of the incorporation rate of the radioactive nucleic acid precursors to 20%, as compared to the controls with FCS. After addition of HPL and SP-1 to the cultures there was a further dosis dependent decrease of the incorporation rate. When lymphocytes were preincubated with the proteins for 24 h, there was a marked reduction of the blastogenesis after additon of PHA, HPL and SP-1 under these conditions had a immunosuppressive effect on the lymphocyte transformation.

[Diagnosis of the placental function with special reference to the pregnancy-specific protein SP-1].

Following a description of the three different functions of the placenta (respiratory, nutritive, endocrine) and their failures the most common function tests are presented. Special emphasis is put on the evaluation of a recently described pregnancy-specific protein (SP1) in the maternal serum. The amount of the substance produced by the placenta correlates well with the fetal weight and well-being in cases of EPH-gestosis and idiopathic placental insufficiency; correlation was not as well in mild EPH-gestosis, diabetes and RH-incompatibility. The validity of measuring SP1-production seems to be similar to that of HPL. The method of quantitative determination is simple and possible even in a smaller hospital.

[Concentration of pregnancy-specific-beta-1-protein sp1 in amniotic fluid in normal and pathologic pregnancies (author's transl)].

The concentration of the pregnancy specific protein SP-1 in amniotic fluid was determined in normal and pathologic pregnancies. SP-1 concentrations in amniotic fluid of normal pregnancies amounted to one percent of the maternal serum concentrations. In cases with diabetes mellitus intrauterine death and rhesus incompatibility SP-1 levels were increased significantly.
