Circulating immune complexes in human acute leukaemia.

Circulating immune complexes (CIC) in the sera of 60 newly diagnosed leukaemic patients were investigated by two methods, 125I-C1q binding test (C1q-BA) and conglutinin binding assay (KgB-SP). Positivity percentages were respectively 20.0% (C1q-BA) and 28.3% (KgB-SP). The small overlap between the results of the two methods suggests the occurrence of different types of CIC. The presence of CIC was found to be related only to clinical haemorrhage and thrombocytopenia; it did not prove to affect the prognosis and the survival of leukaemic patient.

[The role of endoscopy and histology in the diagnosis of esophagitis].

An assessment is made of the meaningfulness of endoscopy and histology in the diagnosis of oesophagitis via an examination of 240 endoscopies. An endoscopic diagnosis of oesophagitis was given in 69 cases. Biopsy was performed in only 44 cases. This confirmed the endoscopic diagnosis on all but one occasion. There were 1 histological and 10 endoscopic false negatives. It is suggested, therefore, that perendoscopic biopsy should always be performed to reduce false negatives in cases where oesophagitis or gastro-oesophageal reflux is suspected, or when hiatal hernia (even if asymptomatic) is present.

Diagnosis and therapy of vasculogenic impotence.

Penile blood pressure studies and pudendal artery angiograms indicate that vascular disease may be a frequent cause of erectile failure in men. Attempts to correct this form of impotence with revascularization of the corpus cavernosum have been satisfactory in a minority of patients.

A new case of human Y chromosome with satellites on the long arm.

A Y chromosome with satellites at the end of the long arm is reported. The banding techniques RBG, GTC, C and N were used. C-banding revealed a reduction of the heterochromatic part of the chromosome. The pedigree of the family didn't show any pathological feature in the carriers of this morphological variation. The frequency of satellite association was also studied.

[Anesthesia for cardiovascular surgery under extracorporeal circulation: the authors' own technic].

The A. describe a technique of general anaesthesia for open-heart surgery, induced with Althesin and Fentanyl, in 29 patients submitted to cardiac and aortic surgery, and relate the results obtained. The experience showed the effectiveness of the reduction of peripheral vascular resistances due to Althesin, as well as usefulness of collateral techniques (cortisonic drug, carbon dioxide mixture, hypothermia, beta-adrenergic block, coronary vasodilation) employed for these patients during cardiopulmonary bypass.
