[Psychometric studies on the specificity of psychological performance disorders of epileptic patients].

Using a psychological test battery for registration of psychic/psychomotoric speed and flexibility/perseveration we examined 78 epileptic patients with different forms of epilepsy and the same number of brain healthy control persons, parallelised in sex, age, education, profession and intelligence. The registrated data were varianz-, correlation- and factoranalised. We found a deceleration of psychic/psychomotoric speed as a primary basic disorder in epileptics. Decreases of flexibility independent of speed were not ascertainable.

[Development of psychological EEG research].

A historical reminiscence is given followed by a description of development tendencies, problems and aims of psychological EEG research. It is necessary to pay attention on methodical and methodological problems of psychological EEG research. Methodical questions concerning the registration of psychic variables and the EEG analysis are discussed. The results of examinations carried out by the authors explain the practical importance of psychological EEG research.

[A test for the evaluation of the amplitude distribution of the EEG].

After a critical analysis of the available publications, a new test for the examination of the EEG amplitudes with respect to a normal distribution is presented. By means of autoregressive models, a linear transformation of the EEG to noise signals of a low-degree correlation is carried out, the normal distribution which is studied with respect to obliquenes and excess. In this way, the compromise between the demands for a low scanning frequency, a large extent of random tests and short EEG intervals, which is necessary for the correct application of the adaptation test, is avoided. A total of 82 percent of the tested 40 EEG intervals showed a normal distribution, EEG's with slight general changes being more frequent than alpha-EEG's.

Classification of diabetic neuropathy from pathogenetic aspects.

A report is given on experience gained during the electroneurographic examination of 800 diabetics of all ages and on the results of respiratory heart arrhythmia measurement on 215 diabetics. It is proposed that diabetic nervous disturbances should be divided into the following groups: 1--early diabetic and subclinical disturbances, 2--somatovisceral polyneuropathy in type I diabetics, 3--polyneuropathy in type II diabetics, 4--mononeuropathy, mononeuropathy multiplex and proximal amyotrophy. The disturbances in group 1 can be reversed by metabolic control. Only the PNP in group 2 shows a firm statistical correlation to duration of diabetes mellitus and to microangiopathy. This appears to be a dying back neuropathy, probably caused by the chronically catabolic metabolic situation.

[The treatment of epilepsies with Convulsofin].

The testing of Convulsofin carried out in 220 patients at 14 clinics over a period of six months confirms the international experience gained with valproic acid and sodium valproinate. The main field of application of Convulsofin according to the experience gained will again be the treatment of fits in generalised primary epilepsy for which it permits to carry out a monotherapy to a remarkable extent. The favourable effect of the preparation in photosensitivity could be confirmed. Also in generalised secondary epilepsy and in fits of partial epilepsy. Convulsofin is partly effective, so that it can recommended as a co-medication in the treatment of therapy-resistant forms of these epilepsies which are difficult to treat. Decrease in thrombocytes, transient increase in serum transaminases, gastrointestinal disorders, loss of hair and undesired increases in body-weight were the more frequently occurring side-effects.

[Visceral diabetic polyneuropathy - quantitative determination of respiratory cardiac arrhythmia].

In 100 insulin-dependent diabetics, the degree of the respiratory cardiac arrhythmia as a measure of the participation of the N. vagus in the polyneuropathy is determined by means of the triggered cross-correlation function. The impairment of the respiratory cardiac arrhythmia shows statistical relations to the electroneurographic changes of somatic nerves, to the duration of diabetes and to the occurrence of microangiopathies.

[The auditory evoked brain stem potential andits value for clinical diagnosis].

Auditory evoked brain stem potentials (seven waves within the first 10 milliseconds after the stimulus) obtained from the intercalated nuclei within the auditory pathway by averaging are suitable for a functional diagnosis of the brain stem. Disorders affecting the auditory pathway (direct or indirect tumour pressure or infiltrates, demyelinisation processes, traumatic brain stem injuries, ischemia) from the acoustic nerve through the cochlear nuclei, the superior olivary nuclei, the nuclei of the lateral lemnisci, the inferior collicular nuclei, to the medial geniculate bodies can be identified and used for the topical diagnosis.

[Diabetic polyneuropathy. 4. Synopsis of electroneurographic findings in diabetics].

Sensory conduction velocity of the median nerve, motor conduction velocity of both median and tibial nerves, and corresponding distal laterncies are sufficient parameters to establish the diagnosis of polyneuropathy almost with certainty. Considering these six parameters yielded in detection of peripheral nerve dysfunction in 22% of diabetic patients who were free from clinical signs of polyneuropathy. Electroneurographical findings in 340 out of 677 patients with diabetes mellitus were interpreted as evidence of segmental demyelination. Within this group there was the majority of patients with clinical signs of polyneuropathy and with subclinical signs of peripheral nerve dysfunction. There existed a positive correlation between signs of nerve dysfunction with angiopathy, age and duration of the disease. A second group consisting of 243 diabetics with signs of incipient segmental demyelination with or without signs of axonaal degeneration mainly included juvenile patients with a short duration of the disease and with a low frequency of angiopathy.
