To evaluate ultrasound (US) versus conventional plain film radiography (CPF) in the detection of pneumoperitoneum, 30 patients with postsurgical pneumoperitoneum and a control group of 22 patients were studied using US and CPF. Sonograms and radiograms were obtained while patients were supine and in left lateral decubitus. The two orthogonal plain films of the abdomen were acquired with a horizontal X-ray beam. The epigastric region and right hypochondrium were investigated with ultrasonography. Four experienced, blinded radiologists examined 160 sonograms and 104 radiograms. Statistical analysis yielded a sensitivity of 75.7% for radiography versus 86% for ultrasonography, a specificity of 89.2% versus 83.5%, an accuracy of 81.5% versus 85%, a positive predictive value of 90.2% versus 87%, and a negative predictive value of 76.2% versus 83.5%, respectively. US could therefore be considered a reliable alternative imaging technique in the detection of pneumoperitoneum.
To evaluate the feasibility of magnetic resonance (MR) virtual endoscopy of the pancreaticobiliary tract by using MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) data sets as source images, we retrospectively reviewed MRCP data sets of 120 patients with Navigator software (GE/Medical Systems, Milwaukee, WI) that allowed display of inner views by surface rendering the internal wall of the bile ducts with simulated light and shadow.

A computed radiography system with solid state detectors (FCR 101) was employed to evaluate the quality of digital images, with optimal and progressively lowered doses, in the study of the chest. Routine chest radiographs of in patients with no pathologic conditions of the chest were studied. The patients were divided into 3 groups: each patient in group A underwent two radiographs, one at 100% and the other at 50% exposure; patients in group B were imaged with 100% and 25% doses, and those in group C received 50% and 25% exposure. Several parameters were employed for image evaluation, and a value was given to each of them (1 = good, 2 = sufficient, 3 = insufficient). Upon comparison of the average values obtained, we observed that the digital technique allowed a most accurate and well-defined representation of the examined parameters at 100% exposure dose and that a 50% reduction did not decrease the informative content in the least. A 25% reduction, however, determined a high degree of background noise and a subsequent, though slight, loss of information.
The authors have employed a real-time fluoroscopic computerized equipment during defecography. Digitalized images were acquired at a rate of three frames/s and then processed and became immediately available. Digital defecography was employed in 67 patients with various anorectal diseases--i.e., rectocele, descending perineum, rectal prolapse, non-relaxing puborectalis syndrome and fecal incontinence. We found time-interval difference (TID) technique especially useful for it allowed different functional phases of defecation to be depicted on a single subtracted image and an evaluation of the movements of anorectal region. The high contrast resolution of the computerized equipment demonstrated even minimal contrast medium leaks in fecal incontinence. The examination is easy and rapid to perform with a low radiation dose to the patients.
Digital subtraction radiography (DSR) was applied to the study of the larynx in 11 healthy subjects and 15 pathological cases. The method, consisting in the subtraction of images obtained at rest and during phonation or respiratory phases, allowed a clear definition of the normal moving structures--i.e. vocal cords, false cords, pyriform sinuses, thyroid cartilage. Moreover, several pathological conditions could be demonstrated. DSR asserts thus itself as a suitable technique in the functional evaluation of the glottis.
Four iliopsoas hematomas in hemophiliacs are reported, evaluating the diagnostic role of CT. The specificity of the method is stressed in showing the morphological and densitometric patterns, which allow to localize the hematoma, to state the originating structures, and to follow its evolution. Comparing the obtained results to those found in literature, the authors suggest the use of CT in any hemophiliac in which a retroperitoneal hematoma is suspected.
