Granulocytic-macrophage colony in vitro formation depends on the presence of the colony stimulating factor (CSF). When, in double layer agar method, the CSF is provided from leucocyte underlayers, the pre-incubation time of the feeder-layers must be kept constant. The results obtained in this study have demonstrated in fact that the growth of the colonies can be remarkably different if feeder-layers are incubated for 1, 7 or 14 days.
Eleven patients affected by common migraine (CM), eleven affected by daily chronic headache (DCH), and eight healthy volunteers were studied. Plasma levels of beta-endorphin (beta EP), beta-lipotropin (beta LPH). ACTH and cortisol were measured in basal conditions and after traditional Chinese acupuncture (TCA). Basal beta LPH and beta EP plasma levels (pg/ml) in the DCH patients (57.6 +/- 9.5 and 16.8 +/- 2.5, respectively; M +/- SE) were lower than those found in the controls (83.6 +/- 13.7 and 26.0 +/- 6.1; p less than 0.001), while those found in the CM cases showed inter-mediate values (75.3 +/- 12.0 and 24.4 +/- 5.8). ACTH and cortisol concentrations in both the CM and DCH patients were in the same range as those of the control group. TCA caused an increase in beta LPH and beta EP plasma concentrations in the control group (beta LPH: 117 +/- 16.9; beta EP: 44.1 +/- 6.7). Opioid plasma levels, however, remained unmodified after TCA in both the CM and DCH groups. ACTH plasma levels remained stable after TCA in all three subject groups. Patients suffering from primary headache are characterized by low beta LPH and beta EP plasma levels and by a poor reactivity of circulating opioids to non-stressful stimuli.
This study was meant to investigate the action of lisuride hydrogen maleate on somatic and visceral behaviour, and on cerebral electrical activity. With regard to the cortical and deep components of electrical activity, we recorded arousal and, at times, the onset of epileptic activity, mainly from the rhinencephalic area and sometimes spreading to other cerebral structures. We also report the results obtained in rabbits treated acutely and chronically by us with neuroleptics.

The behavioral and eeg changes induced by i.c.v. administration of FK 33-824, an active synthetic met-enkephalin analogue, were studied. The Monnier and Gangloff stereotaxic method was used in order to record cortical and deep structures. The effects of an opiate antagonist (naloxone) were examined. The aim of this research was to verify two hypotheses: whether or not there were any relationships between sedation state and eeg findings, and if any interactions could be detected between FK 33-824 and serotoninergic mechanisms.

Creation of a double outlet left ventricle by means of an apical conduit may solve the problems related to left ventricular outflow tract obstructions which are not amenaable to conventional surgical management. Searching a diagnostic method easily applicable, repeatable and reliable, the results obtained with serial echocardiographic controls have been evaluated. This technique has shown to be of great value in answering several hemodynamic questions. An echocardiographic protocol has been developed for the follow-up of these patients.
Histological comparison between cryonecrosis and thermonecrosis has shown that cryonecrosis in generally better delimited and surrounded by a layer of finer and more regular granulation tissue than thermonecrosis. Moreover, the course of the cold lesion is faster and is less open to phenomena of suppurative septic and oedematous phenomena.
The clinical results obtained with phloctaphenin in an "open" study comprising cases of real neuralgia and spinal radicular pain syndromes and in a "double-blind" study comparing the preparation with a placebo, and involving algico-vasomotor syndromes of the face, are reported. The results obtained confirm the antalgic power of phloctaphenin for by the third day, subacute or chronic pain syndromes already presented a significant improvement in simptomatology, while in algico-vasomotor syndromes of the face, the treatment proved effective in eliminating pain attacks.
Plasma lipid and lipoproteins levels were determined in a continuous series of 50 patients (36 males and 14 females), mean age around 50 years, with a clinical diagnosis of transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). TIA was defined as a sudden episode of focal cerebrovascular insufficiency, with complete resolution of the symptoms within 24 h. TIAs are considered an important prognostic symptom for ischemic cerebrovascular diseases, being manifest in approximately 45% of the patients later undergoing a complete stroke. Plasma total cholesterol levels did not differ in these patients, when compared with a similar series of patients of the same age and sex, free of cerebrovascular lesions. A slight elevation of mean triglyceride levels was detected in the patients of both sexes, as well as higher incidence of type IV hyperlipoproteinemia. The most significant finding, however, observed only in male TIA patients, was that of significantly reduced high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol levels. This reduction (-19.7% compared to the control group) is similar to that recently reported for patients with clear-cut ischemic cerebrovascular disease. The detection of decreased HDL-cholesterol levels in male TIA patients may be of considerable significance for a prognostic evaluation of this biochemical parameter.

The circadian rhythmicity of plasma PRL has been studied in some neurological diseases in which hypothalamic involvement or abnormalities of brain neurotransmitters has been postulated. 11 patients with Steinert's myotonic dystrophy, 7 with cluster headache and 10 with Huntington's chorea have been studied. By the mean cosinor procedure, a significant circadian rhythm of plasma PRL has been observed both in Steinert's disease and in cluster headache, whereas a circadian periodicity is not detectable in Huntington's chorea, a degenerative disorder affecting the basal ganglia, the hypothalamus and many other areas of the CNS.
