BALB/c mice were given 200 mg/kg cyclophosphamide intraperitoneally. Three days later, mice were infected intraperitoneally with Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus at 4 inocula ranging between 2 x and 20 x 10(8) CFU/ml suspended in dextran microcarrier solution. Controls were treated only with bacteria. Lethality rates and organ persistence of cocci were significantly higher, and more peritoneal abscesses and adhesions developed in the mice pretreated with cyclophosphamide than in the untreated controls, regardless of the species of Staphylococcus injected. Splenomegaly was also more pronounced indicating a probably enhanced compensatory reactivity of the immune system liberated from suppression 13 days after the administration of cyclophosphamide. Our results show that cyclophosphamide treatment increases the susceptibility of mice to infection by coagulase-negative staphylococci and it is also responsible for a more severe course of the diseases provoked.
The authors review the case-history of a 67-year old female patient suffering from papillomatosis cutis carcinoids. They present other pathographies found in the pseudocancerosis group, and their transformation into praecancerosis. They give an account of the successful treatment of cases classified under the pseudocancerosis group with etretinate. They further call attention to the wide-spread applicability of retinoids.
If a fermentation process is followed by a change in the concentration of maltose, information on the level of the maltose is important. A new type of sensor was developed for measuring the content of maltose in fermentation broth. The base of the sensor is a thin-layer reactor, in which a protein membrane was chosen for the immobilization of enzymes. To measure maltose, we investigated the influence of enzymes such as alpha-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.20) and amyloglucosidase (EC 3.2.1.3) on the effectiveness of conversion to glucose. Because amyloglucosidase proved to be more effective, a mixture of amyloglucosidase and glucose oxidase was applied for the determination of maltose. To develop the best measuring technique, the consequences of changes in different parameters, such as the optimal ratio of enzymes, role of pH value and that of the flow rate, were studied. An amperometric measuring cell with Pt-Ag/AgCl-Pt electrodes was used at +600 mV operating potential. The results indicate that the maltose content in different types of fermentation broth can be determined by the new measuring cell in the range of 0.2-4 mM maltose. The cell was successfully tested in the fermentation of brewer's yeast.
The comparative pathogenicity study of two Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona strains isolated from pig herds of different epizootiological status is reported. Using monoclonal antibodies (Mabs), the isolates were identified as Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona. The results obtained for the reference strain of L. pomona were identical with those of the two isolates, with the exception of monoclonal serum designated 61-7, which gave a 1:30 titre with the reference strain. In a pig herd comprising 1,000 sows, strain XVIII caused abortion in 300 animals. In the hamster pathogenicity test, this strain killed the hamsters on postinoculation (PI) days 5 or 6. The pathogen was reisolated from their organs. Strain XV did not cause abortion in a herd of 600 sows; it only elicited seroconversion in a proportion of the animals (26 out of 274 blood samples were positive, corresponding to a seropositivity rate of 9.5%). This strain did not kill the hamsters and could be demonstrated from their organs neither by isolation nor by histological examination. The blood serum of two pregnant sows infected with strain XVIII contained high titres of antibodies (1:1,600 and 1:3,200) already on PI day 10. The first urine sample of these animals, taken on PI day 10, also contained large numbers of leptospires. The pathogen was reisolated from urine samples taken at 10-day intervals and from the kidneys of the slaughtered sows. One of the two infected sows delivered four non-viable and a viable piglet. From the kidneys of the non-viable piglets, leptospires were demonstrated by histological examination. In contrast, none of the four pregnant sows inoculated with strain XV aborted. The sows did not produce antibodies detectable by the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). The pathogen could not be isolated from urine samples and from kidney samples taken from the sows at slaughter. Histological demonstration of leptospires from the sows' kidneys also failed.
Summarizing the observations of foreign and Hungarian investigators it may be concluded that: 1. Bromhexine is an expectorant of outstanding effect which has virtually no side-effects when used in therapeutic doses; by loosening the thick, sticky mucus in increases the effectivity of mucociliary clearance and hinders the infection of thick excretion sticking to the mucosa. 2. It promotes the diffusion of antibiotics into the lung tissue. 3. Considering the increasingly important aspects of "cost-benefit", the use of drug is also advantageous. 4. In addition to the traditional drug forms (tablet, injection, solution) new forms of the drug (inhalation aerosol, nasal spray) increase its indication field to a high degree. These allow to apply local expectorant-mucolytic therapies and to successfully treat the so-called sicca diseases (rhinitis sicca, pharyngitis sicca, etc.), which frequently occur in laryngological practice and was difficult to influence until present.
It was found that the CoCr alloy is more resistant to the corrosive effects than NiCr alloy. The artificial saliva developed at our clinic increased the passivation range of the both alloys. The higher value observed in the case of the CoCr alloy makes it more suitable for use in patients with xerostomia or an increased risk of allergy.
Acid products formed by bacterial fermentation of dietary carbohydrates in the dental plaque, are required for the initiation of dental caries. The aim of the present study was to analyze nutritional and oral hygienic habits of 216 schoolchildren (108 boys and 108 girls) aged of 7, 12 and 14 years. In the studied population children brushed their teeth after meals in 42.5, 54.3 and 38.1% (in the 7, 12 and 14 year age groups respectively). The additional hygienic aids (interdental cleaning: 32.5, 42.4 and 34.5%, oral rinse: 7.5, 27.2 and 23.8%) were used only by a smaller part of the studied groups. Consumption of dairy products and fruits was satisfactory. The habit of drinking carbonic acid containing soft drinks was rather high (%). Some (2.5, 10.9 and 7.1%) of the children drink it several times a day. Fluoride containing Dentocar tablets were used only in 42.5, 3.3 and 1.2% in the studied groups.
In the material of the Diabetic Outpatient Department and Consulting Unit of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Debrecen, Medical University, the author studied the effects of gestational diabetes on pregnant women and their fetuses in 75 cases with repeated gestations. The author observed that 13 out of the 75 prior gestational diabetic women had manifest diabetes during the second pregnancy. Insulin demand increased gradually during the gestational period and where therapy was needed the treatment had to be started at the 20th week of gestation, instead 27th. In the next pregnancy a higher dose of insulin is required (18 and 23 U/day). Finally the author emphasized on the regular follow-up of such high-risk population.

The author reports on his 6-year experience (1. 1. 1985--31. 12. 1990) in screening for gestational diabetes at the Clinic of Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Medical University of Debrecen. The results of screening performed on a group of 1124 pregnant women with risk factors are evaluated. The diagnosis was established on the basis of postprandial glucose determinations and 75 g oral glucose challenge. The examinations revealed that gestational diabetes developed in 24% of patients with positive urinary glucose test, in 31% of patients with poor obstetrical history, and in 52% of those having family history of diabetes. The overall incidence of gestational diabetes was found to be 34% in the screened group of patients. At the time of the study the number of gravid women in Debrecen was 15.749. The prevalence of gestational diabetes was 1.95%.
Tests were performed on fasting (N = 780), postprandial (N = 890), and glucose loaded (50 and 75 g glucose given orally) blood samples in the period from 10 to 40 weeks of gestation. The highest physiological value of glucose was given as x + 2SD. Fasting blood glucose was found to be stable during pregnancy with the highest value of 5.65 mmol/l. Postprandial blood glucose concentrations showed a significant rise (p < 0.01), and the x + 2SD value remained below 7.5 mmol/l. The highest levels of blood glucose concentrations after 50 g one, two, and three hours following glucose loading were 8.43. 7.69 and 5.7 mmol/l, and after 75 g glucose loading: 9.73, 7.56 and 5.79 mmol/l respectively.
The author reports on the antenatal care and delivery of 409 pregnant women with gestational diabetes. Normal glucose levels were achieved by diet in 239 patients and by diet + insulin in 170 patients. In the course of setting the diet the author's aim was to maintain the 24 hour glucose profile between 3.5 and 6.5 mmol/l. Blood glucose values were found to be higher in patients treated by diet only, as compared with those who received insulin. The difference was, however, not significant. Of the complications of pregnancy, EPH gestosis, weak uterine contractions during labor, and intrauterine asphyxia were most frequently encountered. It is to be noted that the mean birthweight (3620 g) of newborns of very obese mothers was higher than that of the controls (3380 g), and the reported fetopathic cases (13) were also found in this group. Among the patients studied by author premature delivery occurred in 3.42%, and perinatal mortality in 1.2% of the cases.

Six patients with obstruction of the trachea were treated with silicone rubber endothracheal stents implanted with flexible bronchoscope. In every case the stent caused significant clinical improvement of the ventilation. At the postintubation stenosis the stent can result a final recovery, at the malignant processes the implantation seems to be a new palliative method.
Linolenic, linoleic, oleic, palmitic and stearic acids (FFA) collapse the electrical potential of pea stem mitochondria in the absence or in the presence of 0.5 mM Mg2+. Higher concentrations of this cation (5 mM) lower the rate of dissipation caused by linoleic, oleic and palmitic acids, while abolishing that induced by stearic acid. Carboxyatractyloside and ADP do not reverse the FFA-induced collapse both in the presence or absence of Mg2+. EDTA, EGTA or BHT do not influence the dissipation caused by FFA that, in addition, is not linked to lipid peroxidation evaluated as malondialdehyde or conjugated diene formation. Only linolenic acid sustains a peroxidation which, however, appears to be caused by its own oxidation catalysed by lipoxygenases rather than by membrane lipoperoxidation induced by this free fatty acid. These results suggest that neither the ATP/ADP exchanger nor lipid peroxidation appear to be involved in FFA-induced uncoupling in pea stem mitochondria.
Between January 1987 and April 1988 following 462 open heart surgery operations, 83 patients with icteric hepatitis were seen. Among them 59 patients were anti-HCV positive with the Ortho anti-HCV test, these findings suggested a hepatitis C virus infection. The source of viral infection was searched, and a prothrombin complex concentrate which had been used during that period, seemed to be the potential cause of bloodborne hepatitis C. The results suggest that special care is required when using such blood products.
A newborn is described, who was born in term with 3250 g weight, after intrauterine hypoxia. She was born with vacuum extraction, and suffered from birth trauma and intrauterine infection. At age of one day manifested an eclampsia, which was hardly diminishable. The serum Na level was 118 mmol/l. Bilateral adrenal apoplexy was visible with ultrasound. The newborn was treated with infusion of sodium chloride and glucose, with antibiotic and glucocorticoid hormone. Her condition improved rapidly. Her serum cortisol level at 8 and 15 day after stopping of 12 days prednisolon therapy was below 2.5 micrograms/dl, marking hypadrenia. At age 3 months the function of adrenals was normal: the serum cortisol level was 11.4 micrograms/dl, and after ACTH stimulation it run up to 44.5 micrograms/dl. By screening of 1491 newborns, 13 adrenal apoplexy was found. The other 12 were one-sided and symptomless.
