[Fetal growth in pregnancies complicated by placenta praevia].

Intrauterine growth of neonates born from 167 pregnancies complicated with placenta praevia has been analysed. Growth in 22,7% of the total neonates was retarded as compared to fetal age. About half of these newborns died (18 out of 38). The authors draw the attention prematures with retarded growth. The total perinatal mortality amounted to 25,7% (purified percentage: 23,5). The placental coefficient value was consistently higher than the values obtained in normal pregnancies. This may be explained with the disturbed function of the placenta owing to its abnormal adherence. The retarded growth of the fetus seems to play an important role in the still high perinatal mortality rate of neonates born from pregnancies complicated with placenta praevia.

[Scanning electron microscopic study of human bronchial mucosa under normal and pathological conditions].

Scanning electronmicroscopic picture of the normal human bronchial mucosa and alterations of it in chronic bronchitis are described. According to the author's findings in chronic bronchitis the regular arrangement of cilia disappears, the number of them decreases and they become shortened with a club-like formation on the end. Focal destruction of the cilia can also be seen. In the epithelium of the mucosa number of the cells without cilia increases. This is a consequence of the destruction of the cilia on one hand, and increase of the number of mucus secreting goblet cells on the other. Alterations of the bronchial mucosa in chronic bronchitis revealed by scanning electron microscopy may play an important part in the pathogenesis and persistence of chronic bronchitis of different origine.

Iron metabolism in polycythaemia rubra vera and secondary polycythaemia.

Serum iron concentration, serum iron binding capacity and saturation coefficient were assayed in polycythaemia rubra vera and secondary polyglobulia. In the exacerbation stage of polycythaemia rubra, significantly lower Se Fe and SC values were found while in the remission stage and in secondary polyglobulias these values did not differ from those of the normal control.

Tissue antigens and cytotoxic antibodies in polycythaemia rubra vera.

The distribution of tissue antigens for 22 antigens was studied in 46 patients suffering from polcythaemia rubra vera (PRV), using antibody containing sera from 80 multigravidae. The incidence of HL-A5 was significant higher and that of HL-A7 significant, while the frequency of HL-A13 was remarkably lower than in the normal population. No antibodies against erythrocytes, thrombocytes or lymphocytotoxic ones could be demonstrated.

Cytostatic treatment of polycythaemia rubra vera. Comparison of the effects of some cytostatics in 100 patients in a period of five years.

Experience with cytostatic treatment performed in patients with polycythaemia rubra vera is reviewed. The effectivity and side effects of the drugs applied are evaluated. Mannosulfan and mitobromitol were the drugs most sutiable for treatment. In certain special cases, 5-hydroxyurea was also satisfactory, while mitolactol was the least suitable.
