The normal uterus on magnetic resonance imaging and variations associated with the hormonal state.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the pelvis has lead to a new radioanatomical description of the uterus. Variations in the anatomical zones of the uterus were noted with different sequences used in MRI. There was also structural and signal variation depending on hormonal impregnation. Twenty seven MRIs of pelvices were carried out on 16 female volunteers. Eight of them were on oestroprogesterone as the method of contraception (Group I) and had a single MRI. Six were not taking contraceptives (Group II) and had different MRI's during the same cycle. Two women already had already gone through the menopause (Group III). Results showed differences in the size of the uterus (uterine height, length of the uterine body and cervix, diameter of the cervix) between groups I and II but no cyclic changes were observed within group II. The myometrium was found to be thicker in group I and in the luteal phase of group II females in comparison to the follicular phase in the same group. The endometrial cavity was seen in 40% of cases on T1 weighted sequences; on T2 weighted sequences it was seen in all the cases. It was thicker during the second phase in group II than in group I and III. The myometrial signal compared to that of the bladder content (urine) showed a significant increase between early and late echoes on T2 weighted sequences in group I and during the second phase of the menstrual cycle in group II. No variations, or at times a decrease in signal, were observed during the first phase of the cycle in group II.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Characterization of alternative respiratory pathways in the yeast Schwanniomyces castellii by the study of mutants deficient in cytochromes a+a3 and/or b.

After a general review of the proposed mechanisms and physiological roles of the alternative respiratory pathways found in various organisms, the studies are focussed on the amylolytic yeast Schwaniomyces castellii. In addition to the cytochrome chain, the wild type presents two alternative pathways insensitive to antimycin A. One is salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM)-sensitive and azide-insensitive; the other is SHAM-insensitive and sensitive to high azide concentration. Conditions for mutagenesis and screening are described, which allow isolation of mutants deficient in cytochromes a+a3 and/or b in this yeast previously classified as petite negative. The relative proportions of the alternative respiratory pathways are compared in the wild type and mutant strains following inhibition by SHAM and azide at optimal concentration as determined by iso-inhibition curves. The growth of the cytochrome deficient mutants on citrate, a non-fermentable carbon source, and the ability of the wild type to grow on citrate+antimycin A, after a lag of about 10 h, indicate an involvement of the alternative pathway(s) in energy production. Rotenone sensitivity of respiration and ATP level confirm the presence of a functional phosphorylation site 1. The role of each alternative respiratory pathway in energy production is discussed.

[Pigmented nevus and cutaneous ossifications. Apropos of 125 cases of osteonevi].

In a series of 86,400 pathological examinations 125 cases of pigmented naevus associated with one or several foci of cutaneous ossification were observed. This association, known as osteonaevus of Nanta, account for 1.4 p. 100 of all pigmented naevi. In our series of examinations, osteonaevus was the most frequent cause (62 p. 100) of the 201 skin ossifications observed, the other causes being keratinizing basal cell epithelioma (7 p. 100) and pilomatricoma (5.5 p. 100). The patients' mean age was 46 years (range: 21-80 years), and 81 p. 100 of them were women. In almost every case the lesions were located on the head. The clinical diagnosis was always pigmented naevus, but it coexisted with inflammatory changes in 8 cases, and an underlying induration could be perceived at palpation in 4 cases. In 123 or ou 125 cases the pigmented naevus was restricted to the dermis, junctional theques being present in only 2 cases. The number of ossified foci varied from 1 in 45 p. 100 of the cases to 2 to 4 in 91 p. 100, and in 1 patient up to 8 foci were visible on the same section plane. The lesions presented as compact balls (135 cases), or lamellated bone (126 cases), or spicules of unorganized bone formations. They varied in size from 0.5 mm for balls to 1.5 mm for elements with a central cavity. In the latter were rudiments of bone marrow with capillary vessels, osteoclasts, adipose cells and cells that could be regarded as having haemopoietic functions. All naevi contained hair follicles.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Periprosthetic false aneurysm after Bentall's operation: diagnosis with magnetic resonance imaging].

Periprosthetic false aneurysm due to dehiscence of a suture line represents a serious postoperative complications after Bentall's procedure, because of its asymptomatic presentation and spontaneous course towards progressive increase in size with high risk of sudden rupture. This type of complication justifies systematic radiologic follow-up. Magnetic Resonance Imaging, as proved by our two cases, is a reliable technique in the diagnosis of this complication requiring reoperation.

[Pyoderma gangrenosum].

Pyoderma gangrenosum is a very strange disease usually diagnosed on clinical grounds only and without any characteristic biological disturbance. It must be neither missed nor diagnosed too easily at the expense of vascular or infective ulcerations which are much more frequent. Its physiopathology remains shrouded in mystery since the abnormalities that have been found were extremely varied and sometimes conflicting, and were observed in short series. Thus, pyoderma gangrenosum appears as a syndrome which if often causeless or due to multiple diseases and might well be split into different entities in the forthcoming years. Despite its obscure pathogenesis, most patients can be cured by systemic corticosteroid therapy, sulfones or clofazimine. The main point of interest of that disease is that in almost 50 percent of the cases it is associated with a severe underlying pathology.

Alternative respiration pathways in Schwanniomyces castellii. I. Isolation and characterization of cytochrome-deficient mutants.

We have isolated and studied cytochromic-deficient mutants of the amylolytic yeast Schwanniomyces castellii in order to study the possible contribution of cytochromes to alternative pathways. Three mutants were found, lacking cytochrome b, a + a3, or b and a + a3. All strains presented two alternative pathways, which were induced in the wild strain when cytochromic respiration was suppressed by growth in the presence of inhibitors, or without copper. If cytochromic respiration was absent, the Yxs yields in aerobiosis were higher than in anaerobiosis. This shows that the alternative pathways play a part in energy conservation. Cytochrome a + a3 did not appear to be directly involved in the alternative pathways.

Alternative respiration pathways in Schwanniomyces castellii. II. Characteristics of oxidation pathways.

By using cytochrome-deficient mutants of Schwanniomyces castellii found previously, we measured the inhibition constants of azide and SHAM-alone or combined-for the different oxidative pathways, in order to determine the more suitable concentrations of inhibitors. This allowed us to measure the real capacity of each pathway. We calculated their affinity for oxygen, and determined that O2 was preferencially reduced by the cytochromic pathway, then by the SHAM-sensitive pathway, and finally by the SHAM+AA-insensitive pathway.

Pseudotumoral organization of a twisted epiploic fringe or 'hard-boiled egg' in the peritoneal cavity.

A freely moving pseudotumoral formation resembling a peeled "hard-boiled egg" was discovered in the abdominal cavity of an 82-year-old male patient during exploratory laparotomy for assessment of hepatocarcinoma in the left lobe of the liver. The formation involved a twisted epiploic fringe, which was necrotic, sclerotic, and calcified. The absence of any attachment and the avascular aspect of this pseudotumor suggest a possibly self-sustaining mechanism for the laminar sclerosis organized around the necrotic adipose tissue.
