Behaviour of some steroids in postmenopausal women with coelomic ovarian tumors.

In order to study the hormonal pattern in ten postmenopausal women with coelomic ovarian tumors we measured Estrone, Androstenedione, DHEA-S and Testosterone plasmatic levels before and after surgery. Estrone and Androstenedione plasmatic levels were significantly higher in patients with coelomic ovarian tumors than in the control group and they showed a rapid and constant decrease after surgery. Nevertheless we didn't find any ovarian histological picture to explain the hormonal increase.

Report of a case of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of large multilobated cell type with B-cell origin.

Large multilobated nuclei lymphoma is a rare entity that is characterized morphologically by large neoplastic elements with prominent nuclear lobations and clinically by a predilection for extranodal sites and a favorable prognosis. According to the data collected to date, the neoplasia is thought to be of T-cell origin. The authors describe the clinical, morphologic and immunohistochemical findings of a case of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with large multilobated nuclei that showed a definite B-lymphocyte origin.

Primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the spleen: an ultrastructural study.

A primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the spleen was studied by light and electron microscopy and is believed to be the first reported. The neoplasm was predominantly fibroblastic, with a characteristic storiform pattern, and included histiocyte-like cells, giant and foam cells confirmed by ultrastructural studies. Additionally, undifferentiated cells, intermediate cells and myofibroblasts were seen. The differential diagnosis from other sarcomas and the histogenesis of this tumour are discussed.

In vivo endocrine studies and morphological features in a case of hilus cell tumor in mesovarium.

In a 38-year-old white woman with a virilizing mesovarium hilus cell tumor and polycystic ovaries, serum levels of 13 hormones were measured under different conditions. Endocrine studies showed that testosterone was the principal secretory product of tumor cells. Androstenedione, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate were normal. Light and electron microscopic investigations of the tumor showed polygonal cells containing intracytoplasmic Reinke crystalloids. Immunoperoxidase studies demonstrated the presence of testosterone within tumor cells.

Signet ring cell lymphoma: a case report.

The authors report a case of signet ring cell lymphoma, a rare variety of germinal (follicular) centre cell neoplasm. It clinical, histological and ultrastructural findings are compared with those of the nine cases previously described. Original immunocytochemical results are presented and discussed.

Atypical juvenile polyposis.

Two cases of atypical juvenile polyposis are described in males of 9 months and 25 years-of-age. The first was associated with congenital megacolon and presented as juvenile polyps with features suggesting mild dysplasia. In the second case six histological lesions are found: I hyperplastic polyps; 2 juvenile polyps; 3 hyperplastic polyps with adenomatous areas; 4 juvenile polyps with areas of dysplastic epithelium; 5 adenomas; and 6 adenocarcinomas. On the basis of the morphological features we propose a pathogenetic sequence of focal mucosal hyperplasia to adenoma and carcinoma through stages of non-neoplastic and non premalignant polyps. Finally, the possibility that hyperplastic epithelium can in some circumstances have a greater dysplastic potential that normal colorectal mucosa is raised.

Müllerian adenosarcoma of the uterus: a report of 5 cases.

The clinicopathologic features of 4 cases of Müllerian adenosarcoma of the uterine body and 1 of the cervix are reported. They showed the characteristic pattern of benign epithelial growth within sarcomatous stroma. In the cervical tumor, malignant heterologous stromal cells were also present. All the patients are alive and well, confirming the good prognosis of this neoplasm. The authors think that the presence of a malignant heterologous component probably does not imply a worse prognosis.

Endodermal sinus tumor arising in the endometrium.

A case of primary endodermal sinus tumor (EST) of the endometrium in a 28-year-old woman is described. EST has been reported to arise in several extragonadal sites, but to the authors' knowledge this is the first documented instance of origin in the endometrium. The histologic study is verified by the detection of alpha-fetoprotein in the tumor by an immunoperoxidase-peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique reported here. Displaced germinal cells, abnormal ovum, and residual fetal tissues are considered as possible origins of the neoplasia.

The use of pronase enhances sensitivity of the PAP method in the detection of intracytoplasmic immunoglobulins.

Application of immunocytochemistry to formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded material tends to provide capricious results, even when employing the unlabelled antibody peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) method. This study shows that treatment of tissue sections with pronase, a protease isolated from a strain of Streptomyces griseus, prior to performance of the PAP procedure greatly enhances its sensitivity. The optimum conditions for use of this enzyme in detecting intracellular immunoglobulins are given.

[Behavior of C-peptide and immunoreactive insulin in essential obesity].

The levels of glucose, immunoreactive insulin and C-peptide were studied in 13 obese patients and 10 control subjects, in basal conditions and after an oral glucose load (OGTT). The IRI and C-peptide levels were higher in the obese patients than in the controls either during fasting or during the OGTT. The C-peptide/IRI ratio decreased after the oral glucose load in both groups studied. However in the obese subjects the values for the C-peptide/IRI ratio were lower than those found in the controls during the same observation period. These results suggest the hypothesis that in the obese patients the high IRI levels which reflect an increased insulin secretion, are, at least in part, due to an early saturation of the hepatic degradation of insulin and/or to a decrease in the specific receptor sites normally present in the cell membranes.
