The significance of carcinoembryogenic antigen (CEA) is assessed as a way to obtaining a better definition of neoplasia of the liver and bile ducts, and the spotting of possible malignant degeneration in chronic diseases of the liver. The literature data on involvement of the liver and bile ducts in CEA metabolism are cited, and the results of a study of 419 patients with acute and chronic diseases of varying aetiology and severity, and benign or malignant obstructive icterus are presented. CEA measurements, while associated with a tendency towards high values in liver diseases with major functional damage, do not seem to be differentiating for cirrhosis and Ca-cirrhosis, or between benign and malignant icterus. Dependable diagnosis, therefore, depends on the inclusion of CEA in a battery of tests to be coupled with appraisal of the individual clinical and instrumental findings.
The effects of nalorphine 5 mg i. m., a partial opiate antagonist, on circulating levels of PRL, GH, TSH, LH, FSH and cortisol were studied in six healthy men. Nalorphine produced a produced a prompt and sharp increase in serum PRL and a small, delayed rise in serum GH. Serum LH and cortisol decreased after drug administration and no change in serum FSH and TSH was observed. These findings are discussed and a possible site of action of nalorphine is suggested.
Administration of 50 mg trazodone, an antidepressant drug, in a single oral dose to 10 normal subjects of both sexes, aged 24--41, resulted in a significant (p less than 0.01) decrease of serum prolactin (PRL) values. The mean serum PRL levels were 8.9 +/- 2.2 ng/ml in basal conditions and 4.5 +/- 1.7 ng/ml 180 min after trazodone. Pretreatment with trazodone does not modify TRH-induced PRL release.
20 mg metoclopramide, intramuscularly administered to 10 healthy males and 10 healthy females, induced a significant increase in serum thyroid-stimulating hormone values in female subjects only. This finding suggests that dopamine does not play a major role in the regulation of thyroid-stimulating hormone secretion and that estrogens can act in the modulation of dopamine effects at the hypothalamic and/or pituitary level.
Prolactin secretion was evaluated in 22 patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy, before and after thyrotropin-releasing hormone stimulation. Increased prolactin reserve was found. In 11 patients, in whom the test was performed twice, the prolactin response after surgery was higher than in the pre-surgical test. The possible role of prolactin in the genesis of benign prostatic hypertrophy is discussed.
The efficacy and safety of mezlocillin, a new broad-spectrum semisynthetic penicillin, were compared with those of carbenicillin in a nonblind, controlled clinical study in 89 adult patients. The infections treated were primarily those of the urinary tract, skin, and gastrointestinal or hepatobiliary tract. Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus morganii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the causative organisms isolated most frequently. A complete resolution of signs and symptoms was achieved in 78% of the mezlocillin patients and in 71% of the carbenicillin patients. In the mezlocillin group, causative organisms were eliminated in 80% of the courses, and in the carbenicillin group the elimination rate was 86%. Two adverse reactions, rash and diarrhea, were reported in mezlocillin-treated patients; none were reported for the carbenicillin group.

The characteristics of a third type of viral hepatitis, defined as non-A, non-B are analysed on the basis of the most recent reported findings. The problems of identification of the aetiological agent, its transmisibility in animals, the carrier condition, its possible evolution into chronic and fulminating forms, the effectiveness of immune globulin prophylaxis and epidemiological and clinical aspects are discussed. Reference is then made to the results of an epidemiological study of 293 patients with acute viral hepatitis, admitted to the Infectious Diseases Division of Parma Hospital. Diagnosis of non-A, non-B hepatitis was formulated, by exclusion, in 64 cases (21.8%). Intragroup studies pointed to an intermediate period of incubation and clinico-biochemical picture between A and B hepatitis the possible non-parenteral contagion route and possibilities of recurrence and development into chronic forms. Further information on hepatitis or on non-A, non-B hepatitis, can be provided by screenings based on antigen C demonstration (AgHC).

Serum LH, FSH, TSH, PRL, GH, and cortisol were measured in 10 patients with posttraumatic diabetes insipidus both basally and after a combined insulin-induced hypoglycemia, LRH and TRH test. Two patients did not show hormonal abnormalities, while 8 patients had deficiencies of 1 or more hormones. The most frequent abnormality was GH deficiency (50%), followed by TSH (40%), ACTH (30%), FSH (30%0, and LH (20%). These results indicate that anterior pituitary dysfunction frequently accompanies posttraumatic diabetes insipidus.
The distribution of normal intestinal flora changes in the different gut segments and is influenced by gastric pH, peristalsis, bactericidal activity of Immunoglobulins A (locally produced). Saprophytic bacteria prevent the growth of pathogenous microorganisms, partake in the production of vitamins (K, B group), can be responsible for the production of carcinogens and co-carcinogens by acting on bile-acids, food or drugs ingested, can affect the morphology of the intestinal mucosa. Enteroviruses are transient intestinal microorganisms, responsible for infectious disease whose highest incidence is summer and autumn, whose frequency is particularly elevated in malnourished subjects.

After stressing the uncertainties of classifying the syndrome exactly and the part played by psychosomatism in its aetiopathogenesis, some forms of acupuncture have been attempted as alternatives to psychodrugs and antispastic substances. 50 cases are examined in which diagnosis of irritable colon was confirmed by thorough clinical and laboratory examinations, use is also being made of appropriate computerizable tables.
The early clinical results of using acupuncture in painful face syndromes are reported. A nosological classification is given and techniques used and therapeutic indications presented in brief.
