[Biochemical polymorphism of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica): comparison of functionally different proteins (author's transl)].

The polymorphism observed among the enzymes involved in the respiratory metabolism (lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucomutase, phosphohexoseisomerase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase fructose 1-6 diphosphate dehydrogenase) is less important than that of the enzymes physiologically less essential, such as the various esterases, the alkaline phosphatase, the alcohol dehydrogenase, and of the non-enzymatic proteins (ovalbumin, ovoglobulins, ovomucoid, conalbumin, transferrin, etc.).

[Polychromatism in eggshell or domestic quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). IV. Porphyrin biosynthesis in uteri of phenotypes belonging to the dominant form].

With the introduction of delta-aminolevulinic acid, uterin extracts, in vitro, can synthesize porphyrins (uroporphyrin, 62%; coproporphyrin, 27%; and protoporphyrin, 11%). At the stage where the uterus contains a white egg, various phenotypes in the dominant form are capable of synthesizing with the introduction of delta-aminolevulinic acid, the same quantity of porphyrins. These results are interpreted, assuming the existence of differences in the activity of the enzymes involved during the laying cycle.

Population genetics of factor V Leiden in Europe.

We have analyzed 5971 control individuals originating from 26 geographically defined populations in Europe and neighboring countries for the presence of factor V Leiden, an important genetic risk factor in venous thromboembolism. The mean frequency of the mutation in the populations studied is 0.027%, with a peak value incidence of more than 12% in Cyprus; the mutation is absent in Inuits and is at low incidence in French Basques. A west to east increasing cline of allele factor V Leiden prevalence (r = 0.479, p < 0.02) was observed in Europe, together with a decreasing south to north cline (r = -0.801, p < 0.001) of these values-but in this last situation only when southwest populations are excluded from the analysis. Based on these findings, an interpretation is proposed of the history of factor V Leiden expansion in Europe during the Neolithic period, from a probable Anatolian center of origin in Turkey.

Frequency analysis and allele map in favor of the celtic origin of the C282Y mutation of hemochromatosis.

After the main hereditary hemochromatosis mutation C282Y in the HFE gene was described, we report here the C282Y frequencies for various European populations. The aim of this meta-analysis is to compile the Y allele frequencies of the C282Y mutation for 53 European populations, representing a total of 9265 unrelated people representing control samples. The most elevated values are observed in residual Celtic populations in Ireland, in the United Kingdom, and in France, in accordance with the initial hypothesis of Simon et al. (Prog. Med. Genet. 4, 135-168, 1980) concerning a Celtic origin of the hereditary hemochromatosis mutation.

A rare case of a patient heterozygous for the hemochromatosis mutation C282Y and homozygous for H63D.

We describe a woman, found as part of a screening study on cases of elevated transferrin saturation values in France, who was heterozygous for the C282Y mutation and at the same time homozygous for the H63D mutation in the HFE gene. Our description includes two other recently described patients presenting the symmetrical genotypic statement (homozygous for the C282Y mutation and heterozygous for the H63D mutation). The C282Y and H63D mutations in the "cis" phase may thus account for some very rare cases.

Natural selection for an intermediate level of heterozygote activity in Japanese quail.

Latter's hypothesis of a molecular explanation of the advantage of heterozygotes is based on the intermediate character of such phenotypes. Under particular environmental conditions the efficiency of heterozygotes might clearly be superior to that of wild-type individuals. This hypothesis is illustrated by two examples of egg-white proteins in quail.

Increased stability of a hybrid molecule.

The spectrophotometric assay of serum ADH of the quail-chicken hybrid shows, after thermal denaturation carried out at 50 degrees C, a greater residual activity that that of either parental serum; such increased resistance to heat reflects a greater stability of the hybrid molecule.
