In 89 healthy full-term newborn infants, we studied the different contribution of gastrin 17 (G17) and gastrin 34 (G34) to neonatal hypergastrinemia and the G17 and G34 response to a meal in the first days of life. Serum concentrations of G17 and G34 were measured by radioimmunoassay specific for the NH2-terminus of G17 and G34 in 23 newborn infants in the cord blood and in 66 newborn infants before or 20 min after bottle-feeding. Basal serum G17 and G34 values were also obtained in 38 healthy fasting adults. Mean (+/- SEM) G17 levels in the cord blood were not different from those of the adult controls (29.28 +/- 4.16 versus 31.00 +/- 2.62 pg/ml) and increased significantly either at 12 h (48.06 +/- 7.32 pg/ml, p less than 0.025) or on the 4th day of life (80.56 +/- 9.99 pg/ml, p less than 0.01). Serum G34 levels in the cord blood were significantly higher than in adult controls (163.22 +/- 11.19 versus 126.68 +/- 5.57 pg/ml, p less than 0.005) and increased at 12 h of life (225.22 +/- 25.95 pg/ml, p less than 0.02), but no increase was found on the 4th day of life (204.87 +/- 18.08 pg/ml). Neither postprandial G17 nor G34 increases were found on the 1st or on the 4th day of postnatal life. The study supports the following conclusions: (a) neonatal hypergastrinemia is mainly due to G34 fraction; (b) the increased levels of gastrin on the 4th day of life are due to G17 fraction; (c) bottle-feeding does not stimulate either G17 or G34 release in the first 4 days of life.
Case of a 57-year-old hospital attendant with hand eczema. Patch tests were read at 2 and 3 days using the 1+ to 3+ scoring system recommended by the Contact Dermatitis Research Group.
Functional ambulation is an expected outcome of physical therapy after burn injuries on the lower extremities. The purpose of this study was to document temporal and spatial gait parameters of adult patients with the use of the GAITRite system (CIR Systems Inc, Clifton, NJ) after the patients were burned on their lower extremities and to compare these results with previous data reported for normal subjects. Twenty-five adults with lower extremity burns (19 men and 6 women; mean age, 35.6+/-8.3 years) were evaluated within 5 days of discharge from an acute care facility. The GAITRite system, which consists of an electronic walkway that contains 6 sensor pads encapsulated in a rolled-up carpet, was used to collect temporal and spatial variables. The patients walked at their preferred rate of ambulation and completed 2 passes; the 2 passes were then averaged by the software to determine the patients' gait parameters. A 2-tailed t test was used for comparison of the mean values for the patients and the previously published data. The results indicated that for both men and women, cycle time and base of support were significantly higher (P < or = .01) in the patients with burn injuries than in normal subjects. For men, all of the remaining parameters were significantly lower (P < or = .01) in the patients with burns except stride length, which was not significantly different (P > .05). For women, stance time as a percentage of the gait cycle and cadence, velocity, step length, and stride length, were all significantly lower (P < or = .01) in the patients with burn injuries, whereas double support as a percentage of the gait cycle was not significantly different (P > .05) between the 2 groups. These results indicate that immediately after an acute care hospitalization, patients with lower extremity burns have significantly different gait patterns than gender-and age-matched normal subjects. Future studies are necessary to determine whether these impairments in gait limit the functional abilities of a patient.
A cryopreservation procedure by dehydration and direct immersion in liquid nitrogen was developed for seeds of four polyembryonic Citrus species, and the sexual or nucellar origin of the recovered seedlings was investigated. Seeds of three species could be desiccated in a sterile air flow to 16 percent (C. sinensis) or 10 percent (C. aurantium and C. limon) moisture content with a negligible reduction in germination levels. Differently, the germinability of C. deliciosa seeds dropped to 50 percent after drying to 15 percent moisture content. Following dehydration treatments, a reduction in the average number of seedlings per germinated seed was always observed. However, all four species benefited from desiccation in terms of protection during immersion in liquid nitrogen, with C. sinensis and C. aurantium showing the greatest survival (93 percent germination) after cryopreservation. The Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat analysis of seedlings recovered from cryopreserved seeds showed that the dehydration/cryopreservation procedure promotes the germination of zygotic embryos and reduces the number of apomictic seedlings per seed.
In 25 full-term infants at birth and in their mothers, we determined plasma and mononuclear blood cell (MBC) Mg levels in order to investigate the relationship between maternal and fetal Mg status. MBC isolation for Mg analysis was carried out with a Ficoll-Isopaque gradient which is commercially available in disposable tubes. There was no difference in the plasma and MBC Mg levels between infants and their mothers. Neonatal MBC Mg content was significantly correlated with maternal plasma Mg concentration. The data demonstrate that MBC Mg content does not present any difference on the basis of age and emphasize that the constitution of fetal Mg reserve depends on maternal plasma Mg concentration.
Ninety crania of Italian and Austrian males, 25-32 years old, coming from the ossurary of Custoza have been examined, (in all 2205 teeth) to determinate the presence and the frequency of dehiscences and fenestrations. All the crania presenting signs of serious stomatologic pathology have been rejected. Dehiscences are more frequent than fenestrations (7.30% vs 6.98%); dehiscences are more frequent in the mandible than in the maxilla (11.55% vs 1.86%), while fenestrations are more frequent in the upper alveolar arch than in the lower one (13.23% vs 2.10%); the upper right first molar is resulted to be the tooth showing the greatest number of defects (8.13% dehiscences and 49.69% fenestrations).
