[A study on the induction of mutation of paddy rice under space conditions].

Rice seeds were carried into space by the recoverable satellite. After recovery the seeds were sowed on the earth so as to observe the character performance and genetic variation of their later generations. The preliminary results showed that the main characters of the SP1 generation didn't show significant difference from the control. Among the individual plants of the SP2 generation strong broad-spectrum segregation appeared in the 9 main agronomic characters. Mutation frequency is 4.66%. The individual plants of the SP3 generation were obviously correlated with the SP4 generation in the average character values of the 5 main characters. Stable plant strains were obtained in the SP4 generation. The SP5 and SP6 generations were put into control and polt tests. As a conclusion, it may be considered that certain variations of rice seeds induced by the space conditions are heritable to the offsprings, therefore, it can be used as a new method for mutagenic seed breeding.

[Endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms with GDC: report of 8 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To assess the usefulness and practical experience in intracranial aneurysm embolization with guglielmi detachable coil (GDC) applied firstly in China. METHOD: Under general anesthesia and systematic anticoagulation, eight cases of intracranial aneurysms were embolized with GDC which was introduced by tracker micro-catheter, combined remodeling technique (RT) if necessary. RESULT: 100% occlusion was achieved in 5 cases, 95% in 2 and 90% in 1, without any complication. Among these cases, 4 failed in the previous attempts of endovascular treatment with mechanical detachable system (MDS), because MDS could not be safely and totally placed inside the aneurysms and Mag 3F/2F micro-catheter could not be navigated into the aneurysms. CONCLUSION: Embolization of intracranial aneurysms with GDC is safe, effective and reliable, and it may offer the cure opportunity to those enearysms which are very dangerous to embolize or can not be embolized with MDS.

[Diagnostic value of serum creatine kinase MB in patients with cardiac damage after electric injuries].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence of cardiac damage and the diagnostic value of serum myocardial enzyme following electric injuries. METHOD: 32 patients with electrical contact injuries were evaluated by serial electrocardiograms (ECG), creatine kinase (CK) and creatine kinase MB isoenzyme (CK-MB) determinations. The patients were divided into two groups according to the ECG. RESULT: 17 patients showed abnormal ECG (Group A), and 15 normal ECG (Group B). Positive correlations were noted between CK, CK-MB and the size of electric burns. The difference of serum CK-MB and 1.1% of total CK (CK-MB in skeletal muscle) was defined as CK-MB difference. CK, CK-MB, CK-MB/total CK ratio and the CK-MB difference were significantly higher in group A than in group B (all P < 0.05). The CK-MB difference of 88% (15/17) patients in group A was more than 25 U/L, whereas that was 6.7% (1/15) in group B (P < 0.01). Six patients with CK-MB difference greater than 100 U/L had obvious cardiac damage. CONCLUSION: Cardiac damage is a common complication of electric injuries. The cardiac damage could be estimated by serum CK-MB, particularly by the CK-MB difference. The CK-MB difference might be a useful indicator for evaluating the severity of the cardiac damage.

[Synthesis of primaquine analogues and their antimalarial activity in mice].

Ten 4-methyl-5-substituted-phenoxy-6-methoxy-8-[(1-ethyl-4-amino) butylamino] quinolines (10a-j) have been synthesized and evaluated preliminarily for both suppressive and causal prophylactic antimalarial activities. The results of preliminary screening test showed that three of these compounds exhibited significant activity against Plasmodium yoelii in mice, among which 10c was 4-8 times as effective as primaquine. Moreover, 10c was superior to primaquine in suppressive test against Plasmodium berghei K173 strain in mice. On the basis of ED50 and ED90, 10c was about 2 times as active as primaquine. Most of other compounds showed similar activity and the minority of them exhibited lower activity compared with primaquine.

[Detection of dengue virus genome RNA in some kinds of animals caught from dengue fever endemic areas in Hainan Island with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction].

Detection of dengue virus genome RNA in brain of bats caught from dengue fever endemic areas in Hainan Island were carried out with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR). Positive result was demonstrated in 20 of 35 bats tested, with a positive rate of 57.14%; RT-PCR was applied for the detection of dengue virus genome RNA in sera of bats caught from the endemic areas in Hainan Island, 3(16.66%) of 18 sera were positive. Dengue virus genome RNA in female Aedes aegypti captured from dengue fever endemic areas in Hainan Island was detected by using RT-PCR, 1(33.33%) of 3 lots was positive. Similar examinations on bat brains and mosquitoes captured from non-endemic areas were all negative. In addition, monoclonal IgG antibodies against types 1-4 dengue viruses were added onto brain imprints of bats captured from endemic areas of dengue fever in Hainan Island, 16(80.00%) of 20 showed positive results for type 2 dengue virus antigen by direct immunofluorescent assay. The antibodies to various types of dengue virus were coincided to that of dengue virus genome RNA. The above results proved that bat is the reservoir of dengue virus, and this provides an important clue for the effective control of dengue fever epidemics in endemic areas.

Are female drivers safer? An application of the decomposition method.

Using the decomposition method and national data for the year 1990, we examined gender and age differences in involvement rates in fatal motor vehicle crashes. The fatal crash involvement rate per driver is expresses as a multiplicative function of the crash fatality rate (defined as the proportion of fatal crashes involved among all crashes involved), crash incidence density (that is, number of crashes per million person-miles), and exposure prevalence (that is, annual average miles driven per driver). The fatal crash involvement rate per 10,000 drivers for men was three times that for women (5.3 vs 1.7) and was highest among teenagers. Of the male-female discrepancy in the fatal crash involvement rates, 51% was attributed to the difference between sexes in crash fatality rates, 41% to the difference in exposure prevalence, and 8% to the difference in crash incidence density. Age-related variations in the fatal crash involvement rates resulted primarily from the differences in crash incidence density. The results indicate that, despite having lower fatal crash involvement rates, female drivers do not seem to be safer than their male counterparts when exposure is considered. The decomposition method is valuable as both a conceptual framework and an exploratory tool for understanding the contributing factors related to cause-specific injury mortality and the differences in death rates among populations.

Alcohol in aviation-related fatalities: North Carolina, 1985-1994.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies examining the role of alcohol in aviation safety have been limited to pilots and the estimated degree of alcohol involvement in fatal aviation crashes was susceptible to selection bias because alcohol testing was not conducted on a routine basis. This study examines the magnitude of and factors related to alcohol involvement in both pilot and non-pilot aviation fatalities. METHODS: We analyzed medical examiner data on all victims who died in civilian aircraft crashes in North Carolina during 1985-94, complemented by crash investigation data from the National Transportation Safety Board. RESULTS: During the 10-yr study period, the North Carolina Medical Examiner Information System recorded 337 aviation-related fatalities including 111 pilots. Alcohol testing was performed on 91% of the pilots and 72% of the non-pilot occupants. Of the victims who were tested for alcohol, 12% (7% of the pilots and 15% of non-pilot occupants) had positive blood alcohol concentrations (BACs), ranging from 0.02 to 0.14%. All four victims with BACs greater than 0.10% were pilots aged 20-29 yr who were fatally injured in nighttime general aviation crashes. In crashes of commercial flights, none of the pilots tested positive for alcohol, whereas 20% of the non-pilot occupants had positive BACs. CONCLUSIONS: Intoxicated flying, particularly among young general aviation pilots, is still a valid concern. The aviation safety implications of alcohol use by passengers of commercial flights should be further examined.

Expression of apoptosis regulators in cutaneous malignant melanoma.

Metastatic malignant melanoma (MM) is usually incurable and responds poorly to chemotherapy. Because many cytotoxic drugs cause cell death by inducing apoptosis, an imbalance of apoptosis regulatory proteins may contribute to MM treatment resistance. We have previously shown reduced expression of Bcl-2 protein, a negative regulator of apoptosis, in MM as compared with benign nevi. It is hypothesized that other apoptosis regulators may be involved in survival of MM cells. We examined the expression of Bax, Bcl-2, Bcl-X, and Mcl-1 in human benign nevi, primary MM, and metastatic MM using immunohistochemistry. Results were confirmed with Western blotting. The proapoptotic protein, Bax, was surprisingly overexpressed in all MM samples compared with benign nevi. Interestingly, in most MM samples there was overexpression of Mcl-1 or Bcl-XL, both negative regulators of apoptosis. Increased expression of Mcl-1 and Bcl-XL was first observed in thin primary melanomas, suggesting that up-regulation of these proteins represents a relatively early event associated with malignant transformation in MM. As published previously, the majority of primary and metastatic MM exhibited reduced Bcl-2 levels. We conclude that the apoptosis inhibitors Bcl-XL or Mcl-1, alone or in combination, may circumvent the normal cell death pathway, contributing to the pathogenesis and treatment resistance in metastatic MM.
