[Kidney radionuclide diagnosis in the evaluation of clinical problem cases in pediatrics and nephrology].

An internistically and nephrologically as well as paediatrically well preexamined and selected group of patients in particular cases needs for the judgment of the renal function and capacity a nuclear-medical diagnostics which passes these preexaminations. Renal sequence scintigraphy including the trend scintigraphy and examinations of the renal clearance with side-separated judgment of the renal clearance with side-separated judgment of the function are at our disposal. The indication of these techniques and the value of evidence are demonstrated with the help of problem cases. As problem cases are demonstrated a child with glomerulonephritis, a female patient with renal failure post partum before and after haemodialysis including the observation of the course a female patient with localized inflammatory disease as well as a patient with kidney tumour and cirrhosis of the kidney. It is shown that nuclear-medical techniques recognize relatively discrete, but also severe pathological changes and are necessary within a complex judgment of the function, the quantitative establishment of the functional and compensatory capacity of the kidneys as well as for the planning of therapy and the control of the course.

Dietary "meats" and serum lipids.

The mean values for serum total cholesterol for 47 males, aged 32 to 62 yr who, over a 10 1/2 month study ate, within a self-selected diet, beef as the only meat for 3 months, poultry and fish for 3 months, and pork for 3 months showed no statistically significant difference, whereas 17 of 29 females of the same age who participated in the same study had borderline statistically significant differences in mean values (p less than 0.055). When data from all subjects were considered together, no statistically significant changes in mean serum total cholesterol or serum triglycerides were noted, but there were significant changes in mean high-density lipoprotein cholesterol values, both upward and downward. The important results of this study are documentary to the lack of influence of "meat" and its fat on effecting a significant change in serum total cholesterol within a self-selected diet.

[Impact of synthetic sexual steroids on blood volume (author's transl)].

The isotope dilution technique was used to study the oestrogen component of "Deposiston", a long-acting contraceptive, and its effects on blood volume. Blood volume increased by about ten per cent within 15 days from administration of 3 mg of ethinyloestradiol-sulphonate (1 mg/week). Haematocrit was reduced, at the same time. This haemodynamic initial effect should be always taken into account for any assessment of biochemical parameters in response to hormonal contraception.

[Use of dielectrophoresis for the preparative separation of thermotolerant yeast cells].

Dielectrophoresis as a new method for preparative separation of cells is being presented. This method responds to differences in the polarization of cells, which correlate with a number of complex physiological properties of cells. It is shown that yeast cells of different thermotolerant properties can be differentiated by dielectrophoresis. Moreover, the application of this method permitted to separate cells with a high selectivity, which produce more biomass at a temperature of 40 degrees C than the initial population. Investigations on the ability of cells to survive in an inhomogeneous a.c. field have shown that the number of dead cells at frequencies of 10(5) cps and 10(6) cps and at field strengths (on the surface of the central electrode) below 2.4 X 10(5) V/m is small. This fact should be considered when picking out suitable separation conditions.

[Effect of contraceptives on the digestibility of dietary protein and nitrogen balance].

The present paper deals with the effects of the hormonal contraceptives Deposiston and Gravistat on the digestibility of dietary crude protein and on the urine excretion of nitrogen. The substances under test were given to nine women aged between 18 and 25 years. The faecal and the urinary nitrogen were determined in the first two cycles during which no contraceptives were used, and also in the subsequent three cycles during which Deposiston and Gravistat were taken by mouth. The preperiod extended over 3 days; and the sampling period, over 4 days. The apparent digestibility of the dietary protein was but slightly increased by the contraceptives. In case of Deposiston for example, it amounted to 85.0% (1st cycle), 86.0% (2nd cycle), 87.3% (3rd cycle), 87.1% (4th cycle), and 88.2% (5th cycle). Deposiston and Gravistat did not affect the urine excretion of nitrogen and the nitrogen balance.

Serum lipids in humans fed diets containing beef or fish and poultry.

One half of a group of 129 men and women (74 men and 55 women), in a cross-over design at, within a self-selected diet, one egg and at least 5 oz of beef daily for 3 months while the other half at one egg and at least 5 oz of poultry and fish daily. Then they reversed their diets for 3 months. Blood samples were drawn by venipuncture before the study started and at the end of the 3 and 6 months, for analyses of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol. No statistically significant changes were found in serum lipids in men. In women serum triglycerides but not other serum lipids were significantly higher when poultry and fish had been ingested.

[Comparative studies into effects of synthetic oestrogens and gestagens on certain serum protein fractions under standardised conditions (author's transl)].

Initial effects of the following hormonal contraceptives on certain serum proteins in 29 women were checked under standardised conditions through the first three cycles on the pill: Deposiston (ethinyloestradiol-sulphonate/norethisterone-acetate), Gravistat (ethinyloestradiol/norgestrel), Non-Ovlon (ethinyloestradiol/norethisterone-actate).--Effects were found to differ strongly by fractions. Differences were recorded also from action over time. Changes and deviations were confirmed to depend on oestrogen levels.

[Reversibility of alterations induced by sexual steroids in various serum protein fractions, following application of hormonal contraceptives (author's transl)].

Reversibility of changes induced by sexual steroids was studied in 19 different serum protein fractions of 20 women. The following preparations were available for testing: Gravistat (ethinyl-oestradiol/norgestrel), Non-Ovlon (ethinyloestradiol/norethisterone-acetate), Ovosiston (mestranol/chlormadinone-acetate), and Deposiston (ethinyloestradiol-sulphonate/norethisterone-acetate). The tests were made towards the end of the 24th cycle on the pill and in the first cycle thereafter.--The proteins tested were found to be affected in a differentiated way and, throughout, depending on oestrogen levels. Reversal was rapid, but the phase of restitution usually was longer than the period of testing and follow-up. The long-lasting action of Deposiston was visualised also in its "reversal effect".

Informational content of discrete data from parallel test with similar biological objects: selection of key tests.

Results from parallel tests with similar biological objects are frequently interrelated. If the data are discrete which is a typical situation in biological mass-screening, the information-theoretical concept of Shannon's entropy can be used to unreval redundancies within such test and to recognize tests with high informational content. This concept was applied to two examples from the screening for fungicidal activity, and the results were compared with activity-activity relationships obtained from pattern recognition and with variance analysis. There was good agreement, and the entropy calculation indeed yielded a very sensitive measure for the informational structure of the data. If the informational structure is known redundant tests may be eliminated. If the evaluation of quantitative structure-activity relationships is attempted it is furthermore possible to restrict the calculations to key tests with high information.

Effect of dietary egg on human serum cholesterol and triglycerides.

One hundred sixteen male volunteers between the ages of 32 and 62 years (mean age 46) consumed two whole fresh eggs daily in their customary diets for 3 months and also eliminated eggs for 3 months before or after eating eggs. The men had had normal-range serum cholesterol and triglycerides for the past 7 years. Four-day food records kept by them in each experimental period were assessed for nutrient intake. A Latin square design allowed analyses for season and sequential effects on serum lipids. The serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels at the end of 6 months were compared with their initial levels on customary free choice diets as well as their levels after the first 3 months of study. No significant increase in mean serum cholesterol was found nor was there a significant association of dietary cholesterol intake with either serum cholesterol or triglyceride.

Title VII--Nutrition Program for the Elderly. II. Relationship of socioeconomic factors to one day's nutrient intake.

Food records from 466 participants in the Title VII Nutrition Program for the Elderly were analyzed to determine the relationship of eating at the program site to improvement in dietary intake and to socioeconomic factors. The subjects were divided into three groups: (a) Participants who ate at the meal site on the day of the food record, (b) participants who did not eat there on the day of the food record, and (c) non-participants. Eating at the meal site erased significant differences in dietary intake of nutrients consumed at home related to sex, education, and occupation. Seven nutrients and energy were significantly associated with these factors for both groups of persons not eating at the meal site on the day of the record. However, only sex was related to intake of nutrients (energy, protein, and thiamin) for those eating at the meal site. Women and the socioeconomically disadvantaged benefited the most from the program.
