[Transesophageal atrial stimulation in hypothyroidism. 1. Studies of cardiac automatism].

Electrophysiologic investigations of the heart with the aid of transoesophageal atrium stimulation (extra-stimulus technique and overdriving stimulation) have been performed in 19 patients with primary hypothyroidism and a normal electrocardiogram in standard linkages. The control group comprised 34 healthy persons. In 68% of patients with hypothyroidism there have been stated a prolonged refraction time of the atrium-ventricular and intraventricular conductivity system while in the case of healthy persons an analogic type of changes has been observed only in 12%. Atrium overdriving stimulation has shown a decrease of the atrium-ventricular conductibility at a frequency below 130/min and in 74% of the patients with hypothyroidism the blocking assumed a shape of Wenckebach's periodic.

[Transesophageal atrial stimulation in hypothyroidism. II. Effect of hypothyroidism therapy on cardiac automatism].

Investigations of the heart automatism were carried out in 8 persons with primary hypothyroidism before therapy and after euthyroid status procurement. In order to determine the electrophysiologic parameters there has been applied the transoesophageal atrium extrastimulus technique and the overdriving stimulation. There has been stated a positive effect of the thyroid function compensation upon the atrium refractory period, the atriumventricular conductibility and the refractory time of the total conductivity system. The authors suggest, that investigation, in which transoesophageal atrium stimulation has been applied, may belong to the methods of tracing the effect of hypothyroidism therapy.

[Comparative crossover double-blind study of profenid and indomethacin patients with rheumatoid arthritis].

38 patients with active rheumatoid arthritis, randomly divided into two groups, underwent a three weeks treatment with profenid (3 capsules + 1 suppositorium) alternatively with indomethacin (3 capsules + 1 suppositorium), which head lasted six weeks in case of each patient. The study was double-blind using a crossover technique. The results show that the efficacy of the applied doses of profenid is similar to that of indomethacin. Profenid is superior to indomethacin with regard to drug tolerance.

The influence of noise and vibration upon creatine kinase activity in blood serum.

The investigations comprised part of the workers employed in a factory of prefabricated concrete elements. The creatine kinase (CK) activity was determined before and after a day's work in the following groups of workers: I-exposed to noise and vibration exceeding the allowed norm, II- exposed to noise, performing the same hard physical work as group I and exposed to vibration not exceeding 79dB in particular octave bands, III- practising physical work a group I and II but in environment free from noise and vibration, and a control group of persons (C) not exposed to any of the tested factors (vibration, noise, work). The obtained results indicate that the determination of the CK activity may serve as a test of exposure to vibration and noise.

Hypersensitivity to tobacco antigens in smokers and nonsmokers.

The examinations were carried out in 336 tobacco smokers, 91 persons who gave up smoking, 175 persons exposed to tobacco smoke indirectly and 112 persons who had nothing to do with tobacco smoke. Together 714 persons were examined. The examinations, which were carried out on the grounds of the clinic observations and the data obtained from interviews, aimed at the discovering of the causal nexus between the attacks of atopic bronchial asthma as well as the occurrence of acute urticaria and the exposure to tobacco smoke. All the patients underwent the dermic allergometric test with the extract from cigarette tobacco. The results of these examinations have not delivered any evidence concerning the allergenic reaction of the immediate type to tobacco smoke.
