Lipidhistochemical and microradiographic study of distribution of lipids in relation to mineral content in dentin caries.

Fifteen human molars were investigated using lipidhistochemical and microradiographic methods. A peripheral necrotic and totally decalcified part of the carious lesion revealed a markedly positive staining reaction for sphingomyelin, sulfatides, cholesterol- and/or triglyceride-esters. The reaction was probably conditioned by the presence of debris and plaque within this area. Pulpally and immediately below the necrotic zone, an area of demineralization was found which on the microradiographs appeared as a radiolucent zone. The zone showed a mineral gradient with an increasing mineral content towards the pulp. In the zone of demineralization a positive reaction occurred for sphingomyelin decreasing in a pulpal direction with increasing mineral content. A weakly positive reaction for cholesterol- and/or triglyceride-esters was also detected but only in the most pulpal part of the zone of demineralization; the intensity of the staining reaction was comparable to that found in normal dentin. In those areas which were represented by a sclerotized, radiopaque zone, only a very weak reaction for sphingomyelin, cholesterol-and/or triglyceride-esters could be observed of the same staining intensity as in normal dentin. The region between the lesion and the pulp showed the same staining intensity as normal dentin.

The effect of calcium hydroxide and fluorides on human dentine.

With the aid of scanning electron microscopy and microradiography, 45 teeth including 20 contralateral tooth pairs were studied to assess the effect on human dentine of (1) a 1 minute treatment with 3% NaF, (2) a dressing of Ca(OH)2 and (3) a dressing of Ca(OH)2 and CaPO3F after follow-up periods of 2-8 weeks. After NaF treatment the SEM revealed no sign of obliteration of the dentinal tubules, and on microradiograms no indication of increased density could be registered compared to an untreated control area. Under the calcium dressing the SEM revealed in 13 cases out of 20 (5 cases of 11 intrapair comparisons) a varying degree of constriction of the dentinal tubules. Constrictions varied from one tubule to another and ceased approximately 0.1 mm in the dentine. On the microradiograms no significant difference could be registered between untreated dentine and dentine treated with the calcium dressings. Dressings of Ca(OH)2 a combination of Ca(OH)2 and CaPO3F for 2 months, or a 1 minute treatment with a cavity cleaner containing 3% NaF can thus not be considered to result in a reliable obliteration of the dentinal tubules.

Morphology of salivary calculi. The distribution of the inorganic component.

Different hypotheses concerning the pathogenesis of salivary calculi have been postulated on the basis of their morphology. In the present study, microradiography of plane-polished ground sections of a number of salivary calculi has shown that the morphology of salivary calculi varies considerably. The commonly accepted concept that salivary calculi emanate from an inorganic nucleus, which then successively grows by the apposition of alternating shells of organic and inorganic substances, could not be established by this study, as the microradiographs show that the distribution of mineral elements varied extensively from one calculus to another. Thus, whereas some calculi exhibited a lamellar structure, others consisted largely of homogeneous, irregular layers of alternatively high and low mineral content. The lamellar structure also showed great variation, extending in some cases over the entire diameter of the calculus. Some calculi lacked the lamination in their peripheral parts whereas, in others, lamination occurred only in the most peripheral zone. The structure of the central portions also showed a varied configuration. The calculi were often built up around one or more mineralized nuclei, often centrally located, while in some cases a mineralized nucleus was lacking. This report discusses some of the significant factors in the great variation in morphological features and therefore also in the pathogenesis of salivary calculi.

Crystalline structure of salivary calculi. A microradiographic and microdiffractometric study.

The crystalline substances localized in different areas of salivary calculi were identified by using microradiographic and X-ray microdiffractometric techniques. All 19 calculi analyzed had a general pattern of apatite which was recognizable both in the center and at varying distances from the core. In addition to apatite patterns, six of the calculi gave a diffraction pattern of whitlockite, which in all but one case was located in the central part of the calculi. The influence of various factors on the distribution of the crystalline substances of apatite and whitlockite within the calculi is discussed.

Warty dyskeratoma.

A case is reported of a 53-year-old woman, who had had for one year a wart-like papillomatus lesion on the alveolar process in the region corresponding to m The remaining mucosa exhibited a normal clinical picture. The patient's general health was satisfactory and no skin manifestations of interest were apparent. The lesion was extirpated and examined histologically and microradiographically and was found to have histopathological characteristic of the same kind as in warty dyskeratoma. The discussion is concerned with aetiological factors and with problems of differential diagnosis.

Pachyonychia congenita. A clinical, histological and microradiographic study with special reference to oral manifestations.

This paper rresents a clinical, histological and microradiographic study of three patients with pachyonychia congenita with special reference to oral manifestations. The patients, who are relatives, exhibited thickening of finger- and toe-nails, follicular keratosis, palmoplantar keratosis and hyperhidrosis, oral leukokeratosis, and natal teeth. It is stated in the discussion that natal teeth and oral leukokeratosis may constitute the earliest clinical manifestations of pachyonychia congenita and that they appear to accur earlier than nail lesions. When there is a hereditary disposition for pachyonychia congenita, it is important to inspect the oral cavity at an early stage.

Anabolic steroids and violent crime--an epidemiological study at a jail in Stockholm, Sweden.

Violent crime has been associated with the abuse of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) in several reports. Speculations concerning such associations have been raised with regard to several recent crimes committed in Sweden. To test this hypothetical relationship, individuals in a Stockholm jail who had been arrested for violent crimes were screened for AAS in the urine. No AAS were detected in the urine samples of 50 prisoners who had volunteered for the study. However, 16 prisoners refused to participate. AAS abuse was admitted by two of the participating subjects. Although there is a great need for epidemiological studies to objectively confirm the association of AAS abuse and violence, it seems that such studies will be impossible to conduct as long as they, for legal reasons, depend on voluntary participation.
