In 247 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the maxillary sinus, the logistic multiple regression analyses were employed to identify prognostic factors. Among various factors evaluated, use of CT scans in treatment planning (p less than .004), age (p less than .009), location of the tumor (p less than .011), T-stage (p less than .017), and free set-up in radiotherapy (p less than .052) proved to be significant factors independently predictive of survival. The most significant factor in improving survival rate was the use of CT scans in treatment planning which was initiated in 1980. Against our prediction, intra-arterial 5-Fu infusion combined with surgery and radiation did not yield favorable result when compared with combined surgery and radiation. Radiation was combined with surgery, high dose radiation of 50 to 55 Gy delivered in 16 fractions over 4 weeks seemed to show better local control than other dose-fractionations.

In the present study an attempt was made to evaluate the regional pulmonary function tests using positron gases and comparative studies of pulmonary functions were made using these positron gases and the conventional radioisotopes. In this study, 11CO2, 11CO, and 13N2 were used as positron study and then both 133Xe and 99mTc-MAA were used as conventional study. As fundamental tests, we measured the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the line source of these nuclides and then measured the depth response of energy of these nuclides using the source in water. The subjects comprised normal control subjects, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis etc. as clinical tests. A single image or sequence of dynamic images were photographed by scintillation camera (Searle Pho-Gamma LFOV) equipped with a high energy collimator for positron and simultaneously the data were collected by computer. The detector of the scintillation camera was positioned in the posterior projection of the chest in a sitting position. A single breath method was used and after a short period of breath holding (10-20 min.), the inspired gas washed out for rebreathing room air. From the dynamic images, wash out curve and clearance rate were extracted with the aid of computer. The right lung field was divided into two zones, the upper and lower zones and upper/lower ratio (U/L ratio) of pulmonary distribution or clearance rate (C.R.) were calculated. As fundamental evaluation, resolving distance between positron and 133Xe were similar. But positron was best depth response of gamma-ray energy of the used nuclides. Clinically, 13N2 study and 133Xe study were similar.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A database system on the medical records of radiation therapy, computer tomographic and radioisotopic examinations of our department was created in Computing Center of Hokkaido University which has two remote terminals in the department. Old three filing systems which had been kept in three sections of our department independently since 1972 were integrated by the creation of the database. The main functions of our database management system are as follows; 1. data input through two minicomputers in the department; 2. data loading to the database from the minicomputers; 3. production of key word files and link files for generalised data handling. Seven files are defined in the database with total data of 30 Mega bytes at the end of 1981. Many programs for information retrieval and data processings were prepared and every member of the department can share both data and application programs registered. Outline and operation of the database system and some examples of data processings are reported.
