Phase-separating binary fluids under oscillatory shear.

We apply the lattice Boltzmann methods to study the segregation of binary fluid mixtures under oscillatory shear flow in two dimensions. The algorithm allows to simulate systems whose dynamics is described by the Navier-Stokes and the convection-diffusion equations. The interplay between several time scales produces a rich and complex phenomenology. We investigate the effects of different oscillation frequencies and viscosities on the morphology of the phase separating domains. We find that at high frequencies the evolution is almost isotropic with growth exponents 2/3 and 1/3 in the inertial (low viscosity) and diffusive (high viscosity) regimes, respectively. When the period of the applied shear flow becomes of the same order of the relaxation time T(R) of the shear velocity profile, anisotropic effects are clearly observable. In correspondence with nonlinear patterns for the velocity profiles, we find configurations where lamellar order close to the walls coexists with isotropic domains in the middle of the system. For particular values of frequency and viscosity it can also happen that the convective effects induced by the oscillations cause an interruption or a slowing of the segregation process, as found in some experiments. Finally, at very low frequencies, the morphology of domains is characterized by lamellar order everywhere in the system resembling what happens in the case with steady shear.

Rheological behavior of microemulsions.

We study the stationary and transient behaviors of a microemulsion phase subjected to a shear flow. The system is described by a diffusion-convective equation that generalizes the usual Cahn-Hilliard equation. Nonlinear terms are treated in a self-consistent approximation. Shear, first and second normal stresses are calculated as momenta of the structure factor. Shear thinning is observed in stationary conditions. After a Newtonian regime at small values of the shear rate, the excess viscosity decreases when the shear rate becomes of the order of the inverse of the relaxation time of the system without flow. In transient regimes, when the flow is applied starting from a quiescent state, we find that the shear stress reaches a maximum before decreasing to a constant value.

Ordering of the lamellar phase under a shear flow.

The dynamics of a system quenched into a state with lamellar order and subject to an uniform shear flow is solved in the large-N limit. The description is based on the Brazovskii free energy and the evolution follows a convection-diffusion equation. Lamellas order preferentially with the normal along the vorticity direction. Typical lengths grow as gamma t(5/4) (with logarithmic corrections) in the flow direction and logarithmically in the shear direction. Dynamical scaling holds in the two-dimensional case while it is violated in D=3.

Steady state of microemulsions in shear flow.

Steady-state properties of microemulsions in shear flow are studied in the context of a Ginzburg-Landau free-energy approach. Explicit expressions are given for the structure factor and the time correlation function at the one-loop level of approximation. Our results predict a four-peak pattern for the structure factor, implying the simultaneous presence of interfaces aligned with two different orientations. Due to the peculiar interface structure a nonmonotonous relaxation of the time correlator is also found.

Structure and rheology of binary mixtures in shear flow

Results are presented for the phase separation process of a binary mixture subject to a uniform shear flow quenched from a disordered to a homogeneous ordered phase. The kinetics of the process is described in the context of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation with an external velocity term. The large-n approximation is used to study the evolution of the model in the presence of a stationary flow and in the case of an oscillating shear. For stationary flow we show that the structure factor obeys a generalized dynamical scaling. The domains grow with different typical length scales Rx and R( perpendicular), respectively, in the flow direction and perpendicularly to it. In the scaling regime R( perpendicular) approximately t(alpha( perpendicular)) and Rx approximately gammat(alpha(x)) (with logarithmic corrections), gamma being the shear rate, with alpha(x)=5/4 and alpha( perpendicular)=1/4. The excess viscosity Deltaeta after reaching a maximum relaxes to zero as gamma(-2)t(-3/2). Deltaeta and other observables exhibit logarithmic-time periodic oscillations which can be interpreted as due to a growth mechanism where stretching and breakup of domains occur cyclically. In the case of an oscillating shear a crossover phenomenon is observed: Initially the evolution is characterized by the same growth exponents as for a stationary flow. For longer times the phase-separating structure cannot align with the oscillating drift and a different regime is entered with an isotropic growth and the same exponents as in the case without shear.

Phase separation of binary mixtures in shear flow: A numerical study

The phase-separation kinetics of binary fluids in shear flow is studied numerically in the framework of the continuum convection-diffusion equation based on a Ginzburg-Landau free energy. Simulations are carried out for different temperatures both in d=2 and 3. Our results confirm the qualitative picture put forward by the large-N limit equations studied by Corberi et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 3852 (1998)]. In particular, the structure factor is characterized by the presence of four peaks whose relative oscillations give rise to a periodic modulation of the behavior of the rheological indicators and of the average domains sizes. This peculiar pattern of the structure factor corresponds to the presence of domains with two characteristic thicknesses, whose relative abundance changes with time.

Phase separation in two-dimensional fluids: the role of noise.

We use a lattice Boltzmann scheme within which the noise can be turned on and off to investigate the effect of stochastic terms on the phase ordering of a two-dimensional binary fluid. Sufficiently strong noise slows the growth in the hydrodynamic regime, changing the growth exponent alpha=2/3 to alpha=1/2.

[The basquet in day hospital].

We use the basket as the first choice method to treat the pelvic ureteral stones, according to the standard technique. In the last two years ('96, '97) the basket has been used in 49 cases (27 and 22 respectively) with pelvic ureteral stone; 4 of them were treated also by ESWL. So, 45 Pz have been treated only by basket and the success was obtained in 43 cases (95.5%). The 74% (32/43) of the cases were completed in a single step procedure and the 72% (23/32) of them have been discharged on the subsequent morning. Considering these results it is possible to perform the technique during a day hospital on condition that some parameters are respected: little size of the stone, seat near the bladder, easy insertion of the basket and female patient preferably. In any case we have to inform the patient about the possibility to proceed with a delayed extraction.

[T1G3 bladder tumors].

Bladder tumors T1G3 are aggressive and difficult for their staging. Out of 176 p. with tumor pT1, 16 (9%) presented pT1G3. Among the latter 4 were submitted to TUR and chemioimmunotherapy; 5 to surgical partial resection and radiotherapy; 7 to radical cystectomy. After a mean interval of 21.6 months free of relapse, 5 p. had recurrent T1 tumor below G3: 1 out of 4 after TUR; 1 out of 5 after surgical resection; 1 out of 7 after cystectomy. Clinical T1G3 8 revealed a greater pathological staging: 7 (50%) had a relapse in spite of an aggressive therapy (2 TUR; 4 surgical resection; 8 cystectomy); 5 out of the 7 relapsed revealed a greater pathological staging than T1; 2 died by metastasis. The therapeutical choice should be demolitive from the beginning. Should conservative therapy be decided, the convenience of surgical bladder resection has to be considered because, besides being effective, has some advantages over TUR: easier and unfailing staging possibility of contemporary lymphadenectomy healing of bladder by first intention.

[Radical versus conservative therapy in prostatic adenoma. Open adenomectomy].

Our technical procedure for surgical adenomectomy of prostate is the Hey-Delinotte one. Indications for this type of procedure are large adenomas with a volume, estimated by ultrasonography, more than 50 cc. and with significant obstruction and urinary retention. In our experience during the past 3 years, in patients without severe operating risk, it was utilized a little more frequently than transurethral resection. We hope that in the future the new procedures will be as useful and resolutive as traditional ones.

[Instrumental chemolysis of cystine calculi].

ESWL and PCN have modified the urinary stones therapy. Nevertheless these therapeutic procedures are not much effective in cystine stone because of its protein structure and frequent recurrences; these procedures need to be combined to achieve the best results. In cystine stones the lithochemolysis, performed following recent technique has shown excellent results, without complications and easy to apply.

[Treatment of symptomatic bone metastases of prostatic carcinoma using strontium chloride (Sr-89)].

Until now, patients with a progressive prostatic cancer, in whom all therapies failed and the disease spread locally and distally, was considered "a lost patient"; because it did not exist an effective therapy easily to be used. The skeletal pain control is a serious problem and it is a great responsibility also for the Urologists especially if the patient has not a short survival time and the quality of life is very poor. Physicians feel the need for a systemic, well tolerated and effective therapy also for a long time, uniform and repeatable, able to be efficient for these patients. Strontium 89 chloride seems to offer all these possibilities and to be the best procedure for Urologist, Radiotherapists and Nuclear Specialists in order to satisfy the patients requirements. International research has shown Sr-849 Chloride is a powerful new therapy. Sr-89 Chloride is a radiopharmaceutical product for the treatment of painful metastases from prostatic cancer. It is a new treatment but its effectiveness is well documented and results are reported in the most important international literature. In our Department a clinical research has started and our purpose is to produce more data for a clinical and biological evaluation of the results, hoping that a similar research will extend as a multicenter study.
