Technical and clinical function testing of hand orthoses in Sweden.

The technical and clinical function testing of hand orthoses by the Swedish institute for the Handicapped at EFTO (the Unit of Applied Orthotics) is performed according to the test instructions for each specific hand orthosis, wrist-driven, finger-driven, etc. The clinical testing follows a specific routine where a medical record of the patients with the specific questions regarding the hand orthoses are noted; diagnosis, function loss, psychological questions, technical aids, etc. The improvement in function and patient independence is checked against the list of Activities of Daily Living. The technical test follows test instructions specially designed to indicate the special characteristics of the type of orthosis which is to be tested. The technical type test includes an examination and dimensional inspection, mechanical, climatic and durability tests. Our test records are checked with our requirement specifications for each type of aid. When our requirements are fulfilled, the orthosis is recommended. 6 of 9 commercially available wrist-driven hand orthosis have been tested. Only 2 are recommended for prescription: They are from Orthotic System, USA, and from Jaeco Orthopedic Specialties, USA. Two finger-driven hand orthoses have been tested and recommended for prescription: One from Orthomedics Inc., USA, and one from Jaeco Orthopedic Specialties. Three electrical power units for hand orthoses have been tested and two were recommended. The two are from Hosmer/Dorrance, USA, and from EEN-Holmgren Orthopedic Inc., Sweden. One self-contained hand orthosis powered with the Een-Holmgren Actuating Unit has been tested and recommended.

[Effect of the temperature-humidity regimen on broiler resistance and on the efficacy of coccidiostats in experimental coccidial infection].

Experiments are carried out to elucidate the effect of the temperature and Moisture Regime on the resistance of broiler chickens to an experimental infection with coccidia and how far the prophylactic, anti-coccidial activity of coccidiostatics may be raised or reduced on this basis. During the experiment, prior to and after the infection of the chicken, investigations have been carried out on the morphological and biochemical composition of the blood, determining the contents of hemoglobin, total protein, vitamin A and vitamin E. It is established that the hematological and biochemical indices correlate with the course followed by the coccidiosis process and are related to the temperature and moisture regime in tending the broilers. If all other conditions are similar, the coccidiostatic activity of the Pankoksin Plus preparation is reduced both at lower temperatures and at higher degrees of infection with coccidia in broilers, and at a higher temperature and a lower relative, air moisture. The resistance of broiler chickens, grown at a temperature of 32 degrees C and air moisture of 70--75%, to coccidia infection is higher as compared with that of broiler chickens, kept at a higher temperature and a lower air moisture.

[Effect of the preparations amiodarone, pexid and CERM-1978 on sinus rhythm and atrioventricular conduction in unanesthetized dogs].

The author examined the influence of Amiodarone, Perexiline maliate (Pexid) and the preparation CERM-1978 (Bepiridil) on the sinus rhythm and atrioventriular conduction of trained dogs with preliminary implanted electrodes for electrostimulation of the right atrium under the conditions of chronic experiment. The three preparations in doses of 2,5 and 5 mg/kg of body weight prolonged the refractory period of the atrioventricular zone, estimated by the method of "the maximal atrioventricular frequency". The br dicaric effect was also present, more manifested in a dose of 2.5 mg/kg of body weight. The established negative chrono- and dromotropic action had their maximum 15 minutes after the administration and lasted more than 2 hours.

[Rapid gas chromatographic method of determining organochlorine insecticides in human fatty tissue].

A prompt, readily executed method for chlororganic insecticides determination in human fatty tissue is developed. The analytical course includes sample extraction with hexane, liquid distributional extraction with acetonitrile, and purification through small aluminium dioxide column. Final determination is performed with gas-liquid chromatography using electron detector. The method is endowed with a very high sensibility ranging from 0.1 micron/kg for hexachlorcyclohexane to 0.8 micron/kg for methoxychlor. Attained is a mean analytical yield for heptachlorepoxide amounting to 94 per cent. Reproducibility is fully satisfactory at interval of dispersion of the single measurement 9 per cent; confidential interval of the mean - 3 per cent. The method is successfully applied in mass investigations of the general population for level of chlororganic insecticides' determination.

Positional distribution of fatty acids in rabbit lung phospholipids and triacylglycerols and effect of prolonged hyperoxy.

Investigations have been carried out for the determination of the effect of high oxygen concentration in inspired gas mixutre on the positional distribution of fatty acids in rabbit lung phospholipids and triacylglycerols. The following results were obtained: 1. In the phosphatidylcholine fraction, the high oxygen concentration caused a quantitative increase of palmitic acid (16 : 0) at the alpha-position, and of myristic (14 : 0), heptadecenic (17 : 1) and arachidonic (20 : 4) acids at the beta-position. 2. In t-e phosphatidylethanolamine fraction, the high oxygen concentration caused an increase of oleic acid (18 : 1) at the alpha-position, and of palmitoleic (16 : 1) and heptadecenic (17 : 1) acids at the beta-position. 3. In the triacylglycerol fraction such changes were not observed. In connection with these effects of oxygen, its possible influence on membrane structures in the lung has been discussed.

[Method for computing the milk losses from sterility in cows].

An attempt was made to work out a method and establish the indices in calculating the losses of milk due to sterility in cows, along with recording the level of productivity and the duration of the period of sterility. The differences were established between: 1. The size of the average daily milk yield per normative day (a day of the period between calvings of 365 days) and that per day of the actual period between calvings. 2. The average daily milk yield per normative day and that per day of the period of sterility. The milk losses calculated in both ways gave almost comparable results. It is , therefore, suggested when calculating the losses due to sterility to use the established indices of milk losses per sterility day (Table 2) at a varying milkiness of the cows and a varying length of the period between calvings, resp., the period of sterility.

Effect of different factors modifying the activity of some enzyme systems of the endoplastic reticulum on the sensitivity of cell organelles against the damaging action of chemical agents. I: Interrelations between the activity of some enzyme systems located in endoplasmic reticulum and hepatotoxicity of carbon tetrachloride.

An increased stability of liver lysosomes and mitochondria of burned, dehydrated and tumour-bearing rats has been found in the present investigations. Using biochemical criteria we were able to show that the membranes of liver subcellular particles of these animals become more resistent to the labilizing action of CCl4. The latter effect was confirmed by electron microscopic data. The tumour growth, dehydration and burning of rats as well as sleep deprivation, overheating, lanthanum and ruthenium red have been shown to cause changes in the activity of some enzyme-systems located in endoplasmic reticulum. The protective action of these chemical, pathological and stress factors against CCl4 produced damage to the cell organelles studied is discussed in relation to the activity of the drug metabolizing pathways; biochemical (modifying of some enzyme activity) as well as pharmacological (duration of hexobarbital sleep) data were used as criteria for the activity of these pathways.

Primary catalytic systems of biogenesis and structure-functional evolution of biocatalysers.

An important aspect of biological evolution is the development of biocatalyzers. The connection between abiotic and biological catalyzers is discussed, and the role of metal ions as primary catalysts is considered. The evolutionary demand for greater specificity and efficiency may have been fulfilled through the formation of metal-organic complexes and later through enzyme systems. Metal ions are probably responsible for the formation of some of the isoenzymes found in contemporary organisms.
