Treatment of food allergy is above all etiological, and needs suppression of the food on condition: that it has been proven to be responsible, that it is not indispensible to nutrition. The etiological treatment may be associated with drug treatment: the anaphylactic reaction can be treated with adrenalin and corticosteroids, then chronic food allergy may be prevented or treated by: Sodium cromoglycate (Nalcron, Intercron). Ketotifen (Zaditen). Second generation anti-H1 that has a stronger anti-allergic action (Cetrizine, Loratidine). Immunotherapy or really habituation to the food is possible in some casas, but progress by ingestion of the food may be extremely slow. Prevention includes: Food of the pregnant and nursing woman: the mother should have a varied diet without excessive consumption of any food. For atopic infants diversification of foods should be late. Information to parents is essential.

The recent advent of molecular markers has created a great potential for the understanding of quantitative inheritance. In parallel to rapid developments and improvements in molecular marker technologies, biometrical models have been constructed, refined and generalized for the mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL). However, current models present restrictions in terms of breeding designs to which they apply. In this paper, we develop an approach for the generalization of the mixture model for progeny from a single bi-parental cross of inbred lines. Detailed derivations are given for genetic designs involving populations developed by selfing, i.e., where marker genotypes are obtained from Fx (x > or = 2) individuals and where phenotypes are measured on Fy (y > or = x) individuals or families. Extensions to designs involving doubled-haploids, backcross-derived individuals and random matings are outlined. The derivations presented here can easily be combined with current QTL mapping approaches.

The pharmacokinetics of sparfloxacin were studied in 14 renal failure patients (group I, 7 with creatinine clearance of > 10 to 30 ml/min; and group II, 7 with creatinine clearance of < or = 10 ml/min) after a single oral dose of 400 mg. Plasma and urine samples were collected up to 144 h postdosing for determination of parent and total (parent-plus-glucuronide-conjugated) sparfloxacin levels, by high-pressure liquid chromatography assay and UV detection. The elimination of the drug in patients compared with that in healthy volunteers was markedly impaired. The mean elimination half-lives of sparfloxacin were 34.9 and 38.5 h in group I and group II, respectively, versus 19.1 h in healthy volunteers. Conjugated drug half-lives were 23.7, 35.0, and 15.3 h, respectively. The renal clearance of the drug was markedly reduced in the patients, with values of 6.8, 4.8, and 21.2 ml/min determined for group I, group II, and healthy subjects, respectively, for parent sparfloxacin and with values of 31.5, 14.0, and 327 ml/min for conjugated sparfloxacin. The nonrenal clearance of sparfloxacin was moderately, but not significantly, decreased in group II renal failure patients. No difference between the two groups of patients was detected in sparfloxacin levels in plasma. A significant relationship between pharmacokinetic parameters and creatinine clearance was observed only for renal clearance of parent or conjugated sparfloxacin.
We report the characterization of a new truncated apolipoprotein (apo) B, originally identified in the plasma of a homozygous proband and three heterozygous family members with hypobetalipoproteinemia. Using Western blotting, the truncated apoB species was estimated to be 27.5% the size of apoB-100. After fast protein liquid chromatography of plasma from the proband (CD) and mother (OS), the truncated apoB was eluted with particles whose sizes were between normal low and high density lipoproteins. Sequencing of exons 21-24, including the intron-exon boundaries, revealed a T-->C transition at +2 of intron 24, homozygous in CD and heterozygous in OS, thus disrupting the 5' donor splice site and interrupting the translation of serine. On the basis of this, the truncated protein was estimated to be approximately apoB-27.6. The reason for this approximation is that splice-junction mutations can generate different mRNA transcripts, and the truncated protein might represent a mixture of novel carboxy-terminal peptides, terminated by in-frame STOP codons. To date, apoB-27.6 is the smallest truncated species identified in plasma and associated with lipid. An explanation for this could be the hydrophobic nature of the novel carboxy-terminal peptides, which might enable stabilization of the particles by solubilization of sufficient lipid.
Nearly 1,200 patients were patch tested with sulfites in Angers during the last two years. A positive patch test reaction was noticed in 2% of cases. The diagnosis of sulfites sensitivity was then established (or not) either with provocation test or sulfites withdrawal during four weeks. The result is a high specificity of the test, 12 patients among 13 having a positive patch test and a sulfite sensitivity.

This work is a study of the frequency of the association between sensitivity to pork meat and cat epithelia. Comparison with a reference population that was not sensitized to pork meat, shows that this association is highly significant. This suggests therefore the possibility of a crossed allergenicity. If there is a real crossed allergenicity between pork meat and cat epithelia, we suggest that this crossed allergenicity is without doubt much greater and concerns more the meats and epithelia of mammals.
The author has made an observation which seems to illustrate his proposition perfectly. A patient who was the victim of many acute episodes of rhino-conjunctivitis and severe Quincke's oedema has found benefit from two specialised assessments which established a diagnosis of allergy only to latex. The key to this diagnosis rested on unusual reasoning based on a search for a sufficiently "virulent" allergen to be responsible for the severity of the clinical signs. This idea and recent understanding of crossed allergy materials should aid detection of subjects who are allergic to natural latex.
