[Realization of antimalarial measures in the period of eradication of the consequences of a flood in the Stavropol Territory in 2002].

As the result of the high flood, an increase in the area of anopheligenic water reservoirs occurred on the inundated territories, which created favorable conditions for the proliferation of Anopheles mosquitoes, the vectors of malarial plasmodia, thus creating the threat of the formation of the local sources of malaria in case of its penetration from other regions unfavorable with respect to this disease. In the affected towns and regions hydrotechnical measures aimed at decreasing the surface of anopheligenic water reservoirs, as well as measures aimed at the decrease in the number of the larval and imaginal stages in the development of mosquitoes, were taken, which made it possible to prevent the probable epidemiological aggravations in malaria.

[Prevention of endemic goiter in areas jointly exposed to natural and industrial chemical factors].

The present paper deals with the sanitary evaluation of goiter endemia and with a rationale for principles in its prevention in areas exposed to natural and industrial chemical factors (in case of the Perm Region). The findings suggest that the elevated levels of some toxic metals and organic compounds in the body and zinc deficiency are strumogenic factors that maintain and aggravate the severity of goiter endemia in the presence of iodine deficiency. Comprehensive programs for prevention and correction of goiter endemia should be worked out differentially, by taking into account a combined influence of natural and industrial chemical factors on the population.

[Characterization of Vibrio cholerae O1 cultures isolated from environmental objects on the territory of the Russian Federation in 2002].

The biological properties of 46 V. cholerae O1 eltor cultures isolated in 2002 from water environment on the territory of Russia are presented. All isolated vibrios proved to be typical in their cultural, morphological, biochemical and serological properties. The atypical character of some of them was mainly linked with their phage resistance. The appearance of vibrios, sensitive to bacteriophage ctx+ and containing gene tcp in the absence gene ctx, was noted. Multilocus VNTR typing made it possible to group the cultures under study in 34 genotypes. The presence of toxin coregulated pili was found to be directly related to locus VcB. The necessity of the systematic study of the pheno- and genotypes of the isolated cultures with the aim of epidemiological surveillance of this infection is emphasized.

[On the epidemiological situation in quarantine, natural focal and other infections on the territory of the Southern Federal District].

The data on the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the Southern Federal District are presented. The analysis of morbidity in tuberculosis, measles, HIV infection, viral hepatitis A, typhoid fever, cholera and quarantine infections, Crimean hemorrhagic fever, West Nile fever, rabies, malaria has been carried out. Special attention has been given to "new and newly returning infections", and among them to the spread of SARS ("atypical pneumonia"). The role of regional epidemiological safety programs, in particular such program as "The prophylaxis of quarantine and natural focal infections and the sanitary protection of the territory of the Southern Federal District of the Russian Federation from the import and spread infectious diseases in 2003-2005", has been substantiated.

[Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in southern Russia].

At the end of the 20th--the beginning of the 21st century activation of a natural focus of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) in southern Russia was noted. As a consequence, in 2002 outbreaks and sporadic cases of this disease were registered on the territory of 6 out of 13 administrative units of the Southern Federal District. To minimize the epidemiological consequences of the aggravating epidemiological situation considerable efforts and means were required from health care organs and institutions of the state sanitary and epidemiological service, including essential financial expenditures. The results of natural foci of CCHF survey, obtained by 2002, as well as main trends of prophylactic and antiepidemic interventions are presented. Scientific research and practical observations made it possible to work out a number of methodological regulations concerning the diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of CCHF.

[ELISA and RT-PCR-based research of viruses in the ticks collected in the foci of Crimean-Congo fever in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan in 2001-2002].

Different species of ticks were found, in the territories of Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, to be infected with the virus of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CKHF). The virologic evaluation included determination of antigen and RNA of the CKHF virus by ELISA and RT-PCR, respectively. The below tick species were found to be involved in the epidemic process: Hyalomma asiaticum, Dermacentor niveus (Kazakhastan) and Hyalomma anatolicum (Tajikistan). The results testify to the fact that Hyalomma ticks are the main carrier of the above virus in the Middle Asia. At the same time, Dermacentor niveus ticks are infection carriers in Kazakhstan.

[Study of virus contamination of Ixodes ticks in the foci of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan].

The data on the contamination of different of ticks with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus on the territory of Kazakhstan and Tajikistan were obtained. The methods of the evaluation of the virus contamination of ticks included the determination of the antigen and CCHF virus RNA by the methods of the enzyme immunoassay and the reverse transcription PCR respectively. Different tick species were found to be involved in the epidemic process: Hyalomma asiaticum, Dermatocentor niveus (Kazakhstan) and Hyalomma anatolicum (Tajikistan). The results obtained in this study confirmed that the main vector of CCHF virus in Central Asia were ticks of the genus Hyalomma, and in Kazakhstan the vectors of this virus also included ticks Dermatocentor niveus.

[Cholera at the beginning of the XXI century. Prognosis].

The worldwide epidemiological situation in cholera El Tor at the beginning of this century is presented; among its characteristic features are continued extensive epidemics and outbreaks in African and Asian countries with cases of import of this infection to other continents. Outbreaks caused by a new variant of the infective agent of cholera, Vibrio cholerae O139, are still registered at limited territories in the countries of South-East Asia. In some CIS countries (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia) unstable situation in cholera is still preserved due to cases of infection import mainly from Asian countries, as well as to the isolation of epidemically insignificant haemolysin-positive and haemolysin-negative V. cholerae O1 and O139, containing no ctx and tcpA genes, from surface water reservoirs and other environmental objects. In Russia prognosis for cholera is still unfavorable.
